The UK company, Skipping Rocks Lab, based in London, has developed a packaging alternative for drinking water and other beverages that eliminates the need for plastics. The process encapsulates drinking water in a flexible membrane or blob made of brown seaweed that is completely biodegradable, edible, and vegan. Besides eco-friendly inventions that reduce waste on land, brilliant inventions have been created to remove trash from bodies of water. Mr. Trash Wheel is a trash interceptor invented by Mr. John Kellett in 2008 that removes trash from the Jones Falls River at Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The waste collected is recycled or goes to waste-to-energy facilities.

วิธีที่สามารถ รักษาน้ำอันมีค่าของโลก

Around the world, approximately 700 million people in 43 countries suffer from water scarcity, and by 2025 two-thirds of the world's population may face water stress. Moreover, climate change is accelerating the scale of water shortages and increasing the size of affected areas. Governments and individuals need to change their attitudes about water, and overall resource management systems need to be improved. Today, we'll learn about how we as individuals can conserve water we use each day. Think and be inventive in your daily activities, use, and try to minimize, or replace, or cut out completely what we can to have a more simple, healthy, and gentle way of living for yourself as well as for the world.

Living Simply: The Zero-Waste Lifestyle

Today we’ll examine the problem of global waste and learn how to live a zero-waste lifestyle. Everyone sees we have a problem with plastic, and everyone knows we need to solve it. And it’s urgent. Everyone knows that if we don’t do something about this, plastic will suffocate our oceans, will cause ever-worse health problems for human beings. We need to do something about this. We cannot keep giving poison to the Earth because it will stay in the soil forever and keep building up generation after generation. We should do what we can to minimize harm to the environment because that’s our duty. We should do that, we should be kind.

Giving Back to Earth: Organic Farmer Mr. Iain Tolhurst (INT)

Mr. Tolhurst is a highly innovative farmer. As such, Tolhurst Organics was the first farm in the world to be awarded Stockfree Organic certification by the UK-based Vegan Organic Network. Mr. Tolhurst loves the soil and devotes much of his time to improving its quality. He has learned that careful soil management greatly enhances crop yields. The most important aspect of our work is to manage the soil. This is critical. So, most of what we do is really geared towards improving the soil, maintaining carbon in the soil, which is really important, and maintaining the biological diversity of the soil.

Conservation Agriculture - Growing into a Brighter Future: Interview with Dr. Amir Kassam, Part 2 of 2 (INT)

Conservation agriculture is a new method of farming with a wide range of environmental benefits. That, if on a large-area basis, all the farmers convert to conservation agriculture, that means that we have agriculture which is not a net emitter of greenhouse gases, but it becomes a mitigator of global warming. And also, farmers find that instead of polluting the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, it gets locked into the soil, it improves their soil health and soil productivity. And that means that the whole soil function changes. And in the long term, we have to change our education system. And also, the institutions, research and extension systems which are there to help the farmers must begin to align themselves behind this new paradigm.

Conservation Agriculture - Growing into a Brighter Future: Interview with Dr. Amir Kassam, Part 1 of 2 (INT)

No soil erosion should be taking place. And now we can achieve that with conservation agriculture, the new paradigm of agriculture about which farmers are beginning to learn and are adopting more and more, which is a no-till agriculture. It is farming which basically emulates as closely as possible what happens in the natural world, how nature takes care of the land. In nature there is no plowing. In nature soil health is being looked after through biomass, a return of biomass. And also, the third aspect of conservation agriculture is diversification.

Living Sustainably Off the Grid

00:14:51

Living Sustainably Off the Grid

Living off the grid is an evolving lifestyle that reduces an individual’s environmental impact and saves money by eliminating utility bills. It also offers a sense of mental and physical independence and the satisfaction that one’s own efforts are benefiting the environment. Now let’s look at some examples of off-the-grid living. In the 1970s US architect Mr. Michael Reynolds designed an off-the-grid house called Earthship. Since then, Earthship has become well-known and is being built around the globe.

Nations Declare Climate Change as a Global Emergency Part 3 of 3: Interview with Ms. Polly Higgins

On today’s program, Ms. Higgins explains why additional laws need to be enacted to address the urgent issue of climate change. Ms. Higgins has a special message for governments and corporations. We each carry a duty of care for ourselves, for our families, for our communities, but also, we do actually have a duty of care, a moral duty of care that extends to our Earth. Our Earth is ultimately our universal home. And that moral duty of care can be translated into law. Scientists have concluded that raising livestock is one of the most significant contributors to global warming.

Nations Declare Climate Change as a Global Emergency Part 2 of 3: Interview with Mr. Wouter Veening

Governments, especially the leaders of the Government, the prime ministers or the presidents should really speak out and add their face to the cause of climate change. And They should speak up and stand up for climate change, which by definition is an international issue; it’s a global issue, international issue. And you have to plant trees and protect the tropical rainforest, protect the mangroves; plant more mangroves. They all suck the CO2 out of the atmosphere. Meat from animals is one of the major factors which causes global warming and climate change, etcetera. For the individual citizens, just be vegetarian (vegan), then everything else will become clear and the planet will be saved. That is the most effective and fastest way to save our planet.

Nations Declare Climate Change as a Global Emergency Part 1 of 3: Interview with Dr. Peter Carter

On today’s program, we’ll hear from Dr. Peter Carter, a physician and highly respected climate change expert and speaker. I call climate change “the crime of all time.” It’s hurting everything. It’s hurting people everywhere. Climate change is not a thing in the future anymore, It’s here right now. it’s harming and killing and dispossessing people all over the world. The best one to improve their health and the health of the planet and allow the planet to survive and future generations have a future, the most rapidly acting one would be to change your diet and go on to a vegan diet.

Melati and Isabel Wijsen: Making Bali Plastic Bag Free

In 2013 the sisters Melati and Isabel Wijsen, aged 12 and 10, started the Bye Bye Plastic Bags movement to minimize plastic waste on Bali and around the world. After gathering volunteer teams from schools all over the island, they started signature petitions, offered educational presentations at schools, met with people at markets and festivals, and organized beach clean-ups to raise awareness, and distributed reusable bags. This is our vision. We want Bali to be a free-of-plastic-bags island. We can do it, definitely. Yes!

Tiny Houses: An Eco-friendly Way of Living

Many eco-conscious people choose to live in tiny houses. They require fewer materials to build than traditional houses and so are highly economical. They also use less energy to run, require fewer resources to maintain, and help minimize household clutter, which in turn reduces the time needed for cleaning and organizing. Therefore, tiny homes offer owners more time and freedom to relax, travel, or partake in other beneficial activities. What’s more, some tiny houses are small and light enough to tow, having wheels rather than foundations, and others can float.

The Joys and Benefits of Organic Farming: Interview with Mr. Helmut Butolen, Part 2 of 2

There are a lot of people who say, “I’d love to try that, too.” It’s not as difficult as it looks. You have to start the whole thing slowly and with a sense of what is appropriate. We also do small courses here. That is, everyone who is interested is invited at any time and can learn how to grow vegetables efficiently here. To extend the season for growing vegetables, Mr. Butolen has constructed a homemade greenhouse.

The Joys and Benefits of Organic Farming: Interview with Mr. Helmut Butolen, Part 1 of 2

The greatest challenge for an organic farmer is always the climate. We live here in a cold temperate climate. But has changed a lot in the last 20 years and it comes again and again to bigger dry periods and then to strong rain again. It’s not as it was 20 years ago. You have to cope with it. You have to make sure that you select your plants correctly and choose what you grow correctly. The second big challenge is of course that we have no plant growth in winter. But the customers also want to be supplied in winter. This means that you always have to make sure you have good storage facilities and a sufficient variety even in winter.

Heavenly Messenger: How One Small Siberian Crane Transformed Taiwan (Formosa), Part 4 of 4

Due to global warming and climate change, the water level gets too high or too low in the habitat, so the White Cranes can’t find enough eelgrass to eat. Then they move out of their habitat center to look for food, causing conflict between humans and the cranes. This might be the reason their appearance has been newly recorded in the last two years in Japan, Taiwan (Formosa), and Hong Kong. In Spring, the cranes start to fly to the north, leaving Poyang Lake as their winter habitat and flying for 2,000 km towards the northeast to Momege Nature Reserve in Jilin Province of Northeast China.

When I look back at this story again today, I realize it's not just about the little crane's amazing journey, but about mine as well. It was a turning point in my life. Because of this little crane, I had the chance to see through his eyes. I went to his habitat, the place to spend the winter, and the place where he was born. I visited Siberia, Poyang Lake, and Momoge. I learned about the harsh environment of his habitat. It's very difficult.

The little crane is really intelligent. When I met him at the farm, he stood on the ridge and called "jiu jiu-jiu," "jiu jiu-jiu." One "Jiu" and then two more. He would call like that. How strange! He's very intelligent and sensitive. When the lotus flowers are blossoming, there are many tourists. The little crane wanted to peck at people all the time. But when I went to him and scolded him, he did somewhere else. It's true. This little crane is like a person and understands people.
