Positive Changes in Countries Part 34 of a Multi-part Series – Altruistic Governments, Altruistic Citizens: Laos, Latvia, Lebanon

Laos is home to a variety of diverse ethnic groups who are unified through the country’s prevailing Buddhist beliefs. The country’s lushly forested mountains, plateaus, plains, and the Mekong River basin host an amazing range of biodiversity. To preserve this precious life, our government has wisely designated a network of protected regions. To achieve the goal of bringing electricity to 98% of the country’s citizens by 2030, our country is employing sustainable solar energy. Moreover, our forethoughtful government is determined to develop a state-of-the-art rail network to connect with our neighboring countries. Toward this goal, the Laos-China high-speed railway linking our capital Vientiane with Kunming, China, took its inaugural journey on December 3, 2021. Latvia is a country in northeastern Europe, with a shoreline that meets the Baltic Sea. With music at the heart of our culture, the Latvian Nationwide Song and Dance Festival has been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Legislation recently passed into law that automatically grants Latvian citizenship to all newborn children. As stated by Her Excellency Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner on Human Rights for the Council of Europe, “This measure represents significant progress toward implementing the right of each child to a nationality at birth and toward fully including all children in Latvian society.” The kind Latvians have been avidly helping Ukraine war victims. My country, Lebanon, is a small Western Asian nation situated on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. To restore the nation’s sacred cedar tree, as well as precious pine, fir, and oak, Lebanon has worked in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to plant over 1.2 million tree seedlings in ten regions throughout the country. Mediated by the United States President, His Excellency Donald Trump, a meeting was agreed upon by His Excellency Michel Aoun, President of Lebanon and His Excellency Benjamin Netanyahu, Former Prime Minister of Israel. Both sides indicated that they would continue negotiations toward a permanent positive resolution. Most joyously, the veganism movement in Lebanon is growing. What’s more, Hayek Hospital in the capital Beirut became the first in our country to serve patients 100% vegan meals.

Liechtenstein also wisely promotes organic agriculture, a sustainable and advantageous practice for food production. Organic Advisory Service Liechtenstein was launched in 1991. In 2009, the government introduced an agriculture law to compensate farmers for transitioning from traditional to organic farming. And it’s encouraging to see that the vegan trend is accelerating in Liechtenstein. In addition, 52.8% of the survey participants indicate they are consuming plant-based meat regularly. Many restaurants in Liechtenstein now have vegan options on their menus. With over 3,000 lakes, numerous rivers, and 33% forest coverage, Lithuania is known for its picturesque landscapes. Positive Changes in Countries Part 37 of a Multi-part Series – Protective Governments, Protective Citizens: Macau, Macedonia, Madagascar

Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. The Macau SAR government aims to develop Macau into a sustainable city. In 2010, Macau implemented regulations and policies for solar energy development, which has encouraged the country to take on the approach of rooftop solar panels and grid-connected photovoltaic systems. Macau is set to build into a smart city with its development plan that started in 2016, making positive progress. In addition, e-payment, e-banking, and e-government have considerably eased the Macanese livelihood during the global COVID-19 pandemic. What's more, the Macanese are wisely and passionately embracing plant-based foods. Currently, Macau has over 25 vegan/vegetarian restaurants.North Macedonia is a small nation in the Balkan Peninsular of Southeast Europe. In 2020, North Macedonia successfully became the 30th member of NATO. North Macedonia has increased her political and economic ties with the Western Balkan countries to encourage economic growth. Furthermore, North Macedonia was one of the first countries to have total access to wireless-broadband connections in 2006. The wise government of North Macedonia then proactively invested in adopting digital technologies as one of the key strategies in economic development.Madagascar is an African island country in the southwest Indian ocean separated from the African continent by the Mozambique channel. Madagascar actively promotes solar energy which has stimulated continuous economic growth from 2010 to 2019 for 20% of the population in urban areas. The government aims to benefit the rural areas by increasing the electricity connection rate to 70 % by 2030. In January 2017, the Malagasy government implemented a new nationality law guaranteeing equal rights for women and men to bestow their nationality on their children. Heavy forest loss in Madagascar has brought a tremendous threat to its exceptional biodiversity and the livelihood of rural communities. Recognizing this, on January 19, 2020, Madagascar launched a national drive to plant 60 million trees. His Excellency President Rajoelina's administration initiated a plan to plant 40,000 hectares per year.

Positive Changes in Countries Part 38 of a Multi-part Series – Marvelous Governments, Marvelous Citizens: Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives

The government of Malawi is a recipient of the Shining World Leadership Award for its noble compassion, stewardship of financial assistance, and dedication to improving the nation’s well-being. Malawi has made continuous progress in health care for women and children with technical and financial support from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). To address the damage done by uncontrolled clear-cutting of large jungle tracts, the country’s Department of Forestry launched a campaign in 2017 to reverse the trend and create new job opportunities. Malawi is also committed to educating its young people. Secondary Education Expansion for Development (SEED) is a two-pronged program established in 2019 to increase access to high school instruction, especially for female students. Thanks to decades of political stability and steady growth, Malaysia enjoys one of the most vibrant economies in Asia. It is also mindful of its carbon footprint and has seen strong growth in sustainable sources of power over the past decade. Concerning climate change, a growing number of Malaysians are aware of the connection between their food choices and the environment. The country was ranked the fifth most vegan-friendly tourist destination by HotelFollower.com in 2019. Finally, Malaysian women won a milestone victory in December 2021, when the Appellate Court unanimously ruled that they have the same right as Malaysian men regarding offspring born overseas. The Republic of Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean southwest of India and Sri Lanka. In 2015, the villas on the island of Gasfinolhu became the world’s first 100% solar-powered luxury resort. In response to the likelihood of rising oceans, a 432-hectare artificial island was created using sand reclaimed from the seabed. Due to repeated requests from tourists for meals without meat, many holiday destinations in the Maldives have opened plant-based restaurants with menus offering a variety of international vegan dishes.
