Peanuts Wellbeing Sanctuary – A Place of Transformation, Part 2 of 2

The sanctuary’s animals certainly have a charisma about them! But what is striking is the power that these magnificent beings have to touch the hearts of the guests! As the vegan co-founders Mick Still and Tracey Keenan share with us, some people are so transformed by the visit, they want to permanently change their relationship with our animal co-inhabitants for the better. "It’s very kind of ove

Successful Refugees and Immigrants Leading the Way, Part 6: Tech Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Dame Stephanie Shirley

Dame Stephanie Shirley was born Vera Buchthal in Dortmund, Germany, in 1933. The turbulent political situation at the time prompted many parents in Central Europe to send their children to safer countries. In July of 1939, Stephanie, aged 5, and her 9-year-old sister Renate, were put on a train headed for England, UK. After a journey of two and a half days, they arrived in Britain as Kindertranspo

Ronen Bar (vegan): Bringing Animal Suffering to Light, Part 3 of 3

Today, we hear Ronen speak about kosher foods as well as cultured meat. Kosher means that the product has been certified to meet Jewish dietary laws. Both animal products and animal-free foods can be kosher. “Unfortunately, kosher doesn't mean that there was no animal cruelty. [It’s] the other way around. All the kosher meat sold in Israel is entangled, is connected to animal cruelty.” “The only kosher from a moral perspective is, of course, plant-based food.” “And when I look at all of this effort, endeavor, to help animals, I see two main aspects. The first one is raising consciousness, which will make people give up some of their comfort in order not to hurt animals. So raising consciousness is very important. The other one is technology. Technology will make it much easier for people not to hurt animals. So you don't have to give up so much or change so much in order for you not to hurt animals. And these two efforts, are coming and helping each other and feeding each other.” “I'm the chairperson of the board at the Modern Agriculture Foundation. It's a nonprofit focused on promoting alternative proteins, which means that we don't do the R&D (research and development), the scientific work ourselves. Our job is to make sure others will do it. So we reach out to scientists, to entrepreneurs, to companies, to big food companies and to investors, everybody in the space that can enlarge the effort to make cell-based meat and make plant-based meats commercially viable and cheap and tasty as fast as possible.” “I have to say that from an ethical standpoint, the best thing is just to eat the plain soy and legumes and cereals. The effort to make the cell-based meats, the mimicking of the animal protein meats consumes more resources from the environment. Nevertheless, they're still very good compared to animal-based products.” “I think all of them are really in a totally different category than meat, of course, because they're more environmentally-friendly, or you can say less contributing to animal genocide, and because they don't hurt animals directly, like factory farming is doing.”

Today, we introduce Luol Deng, who was a 2-time National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star and respected player. Compassionate in nature, he is also a philanthropist and humanitarian. Luol was born in what is now South Sudan on April 16, 1985. In 1993, the Deng family moved to the UK after the British government granted Luol’s father political asylum. At 14 years-old, Luol moved to the US and

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 3 of 3

00:14:21

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 3 of 3

"Leo Tolstoy said, 'When we wish to harm others, we really do evil to ourselves.' And I think, the way we have harmed animals, it’s now clear that that is going to lead to the destruction of the planet through climate chaos." The Amazon rainforest, considered the "lungs of the Earth," is being razed at a frighteningly rapid pace for animal livestock raising. "We have to end animal agriculture, and then we have to reforest the Earth and tackle the idea of private property and selfishness and say, 'The forests are something that are for the survival of the whole planet.'" The animal livestock industry needs to end as soon as possible. Dr. Krajnc sees the immediate need for initiatives to help industry farmers adopt vegetable farming or enter other professions that are beneficial to our planet’s environment. "I think it’s important for governments to promote a just transition in our society so that we can close down animal agriculture facilities and create plant-based ones. The most powerful actor in our current world, in human affairs, is our governments at this point. And I think they have a responsibility to end animal agriculture subsidies and to put money towards a just transition. One way to get there is for grassroots groups to start showing examples of that, to give them something to look at." Anita also has a very clear idea of how to help people embrace veganism. "I think the most powerful way to switch to a vegan diet is to help people become activists. Once your friends and family become activists, they will then promote others to become vegan and activists. So I think we have to follow in the footsteps of (Mahatma) Gandhi and Martin Luther King. What they did in their struggles for equality was they built a mass-based grassroots movement. It’s no different for animal rights." Our appreciation goes to Dr. Anita Krajnc and the vigil teams across the globe for raising the public’s awareness of the tremendous suffering of animals raised for food and that the cruelty-free lifestyle is humanity’s future. May your loving and compassionate actions quickly change people’s hearts and further speed us toward a peaceful vegan world.

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 2 of 3

00:15:47

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 2 of 3

"When you use a love-based, non-judgemental approach, I think it’s easier to persuade the public to join us and to transform the industry from one that is producing animal products to one that is fully plant-based and vegan and ethical as well. I was charged for giving water to thirsty pigs in 2015, and I was acquitted for that. The judge agreed that compassion is not a crime. The Pig Trial was really important for the development of our movement. I had two vegan lawyers that were representing me, Gary Grill and James Silver. What they did with this case was they turned it around and put animal agriculture on trial. What we were fighting for was not only that compassion is not a crime and that it is a duty to give water to thirsty animals, we were also fighting for the principle that pigs are not property. They’re persons. We failed on that second goal. The judge did not recognize that, so that fight continues because it’s absolutely fundamental to recognize animals as persons. The Pig Trial brought a lot of attention to the Animal Save Movement, so it inspired more groups to form. I think artists are very important in social change. In our struggle, we have to use both reason and feelings and it’s art that really helps us with the latter. Joaquin Phoenix is someone who’s been to dozens of vigils in LA. Joaquin's speech at the Oscars was like a speech written from God, I thought. He was like the voice of God or angels." "I think we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world. And many of us, what we’re guilty of is an egocentric worldview, the belief that we’re the center of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth, we steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. And then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal. When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said, 'Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.' Thank you."

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 1 of 3

00:13:24

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 1 of 3

Today, we have the honor of meeting Dr. Krajnc, the Canadian co-founder of Toronto Pig Save and the worldwide Animal Save Movement. Anita is a former political science professor at Queen’s University in the province of Ontario, Canada, who has studied how social movements move forward through public education. She is also a vegan. “Toronto Pig Save started doing 3 vigils a week in July 2011, and what we did was we would bear witness to the pigs on a traffic island when the trucks would stop. It’s such a powerful thing to meet the animals before they go to the slaughterhouse and to see their faces and look into their eyes. We called it bearing witness.” One of the devoted volunteers at Toronto Pig Save was the late Regan Russell. A former model, she had been advocating for animal rights since 1977. In late 2019, a bill was introduced in Ontario’s legislature making it illegal to interact with animals while they are being transported and expose the violence against animals in slaughterhouses and farms. Anita, Regan, and many other animal rights activists vehemently opposed the bill. It was passed into law on June 17, 2020. Two days later, it was a very hot day, and Regan and the other activists were giving water to the pigs on the trucks. Regan stood for several minutes in the road in front of the slaughterhouse to stop a truck so that the pigs could get water. The truck accelerated unexpectedly. Regan was killed. Vigils were held all over the world for Regan Russell. This beautiful soul’s compassion and her belief in justice and peace for all animals will always be remembered. We thank Dr. Anita Krajnc and her fellow animal advocates for their courage, and hope we can all work together to make the Earth a kinder and more beautiful place. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present Dr. Anita Krajnc with the Shining World Compassion Award, with a humble, loving gift of US$15,000 towards your noble organizations, Toronto Pig Save and the Animal Save Movement. Lots of love, praises and prayers for your safety and success, in God’s mercy.”

Successful Refugees and Immigrants Leading the Way, Part 4: From Refugee to International Superstar - Gloria Estefan

Gloria Estefan, known as the "Queen of Latin Pop," was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1957. Still a toddler, she and her family fled to Miami, Florida, USA, in 1959. In 1975, the then 18-year-old Gloria Fajardo / García met Emilio Estefan, who led a band called the Miami Latin Boys. The band released its second English-language album, Primitive Love, in 1985. The album contained three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. First, “Conga” peaked at #10 and became Ms. Estefan’s signature song a few years later. Unfortunately, in 1990, tragedy struck and Gloria was seriously injured in a severe bus crash. However, thanks to her intense determination and perseverance, Gloria made a miraculous comeback. Ms. Estefan, the most successful crossover performer in Latin music, has received multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. In 2015, Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio each received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-US President, His Excellency Barack Obama. It is the highest civilian honor in the US. The reasons cited for the selection were for their role in popularizing Latin music globally and opening doors for other Latin artists through their success. In 1997, she founded the Gloria Estefan Foundation, which supports various charities. The foundation monetarily supports no-kill shelters and helped fund the creation of the Vero Beach Dog Park. Over the years, Ms. Estefan has received numerous awards for her humanitarian efforts. In May 1993, Gloria made her first visit to New York’s Ellis Island, a previous port of entry for the US that welcomed 12 million immigrants when it was operational. Her selection shows Ms. Estefan’s role as a wonderful ambassador for her culture who proudly represents Hispanic people who have immigrated to the USA.

Divine Love Never Ends

In a joyful celebration held on October 25, 1993, in Hawaii, USA, the then-mayor of the city and county of Honolulu, the Honorable Frank F. Fasi, proclaimed October 25th as “Supreme Master Ching Hai Day” and presented Master with the International Peace Commendation Award, Honorary Citizenship, Certificate of Merit, and a bronze bust of Her likeness that is permanently displayed in a Honolulu public park. He noted Her enormous contributions to philanthropic and humanitarian causes around our world and referred to Her as “an angel of mercy for humanity.” Throughout the years, Supreme Master Ching Hai has generously provided financial assistance across the globe. Master said that each time She makes a contribution, She wishes that She could give more. She always humbly attributes all Her charitable deeds to God. Master mostly performs charitable acts anonymously, while providing assistance to the most neglected and vulnerable. Master’s selfless care, unconditional sacrifice, and steadfast nobility are true examples of the all-encompassing love of God. Her constant connection with the Higher Realms is also apparent in Her abundant creative talents and deep appreciation of artists. Master has often emphasized the important role that artists play, by declaring the International Artist Day, in order to honor the inspired beings who bring so much beauty and love to our world. To benefit more sentient beings, Supreme Master Ching Hai created Supreme Master Television, in order to broadcast constructive programming, and inspire the world to embrace Her Vision of a peaceful planet. As many viewers have expressed, Supreme Master Television is a gift from God, bringing about wondrous and miraculous changes to the world. The ever-compassionate and merciful Supreme Master Ching Hai cares and protects all beings with Her indiscriminate and selfless love. New Story and ICON: Pioneering Solutions to Homelessness

New Story and ICON: Pioneering Solutions to Homelessness

When Brett Hagler of the United States was 18, he developed a rare form of cancer. Surviving that experience changed the way he thought about his life and what really matters. Brett visited Haiti several years after the 2010 earthquake and was shocked to see tens of thousands of people still living in tents and other temporary accommodations. When he returned to San Francisco, California, USA, he met Alexandria Lafci, who shared his sentiments, and together they decided to develop ways of providing housing to families that need it the most. With their friend, Matthew Marshall, they cofounded a nonprofit called New Story Charity, and started raising money through crowdfunding to build five homes in Haiti. The success of New Story’s first project inspired Brett and Alexandria to challenge themselves. In 2017, New Story connected with a construction technologies company in Austin, Texas, USA, that had reached the same conclusion. Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON, was looking for a home-building solution that would be affordable, scalable and sustainable. New Story and ICON partnered to design a 3D printer that could build a house. Instead of extruding plastic like smaller 3D printers, their machine pumps out a special mortar-like material that they call “Lavacrete.” New Story and ICON have evolved the printer and the process so that they can provide homes even faster and cheaper. The second iteration of the 3D printer is called the Vulcan II. It is gantry-style on rails, meaning a bridge-like structure with a platform that supports the actual printer as it moves around the building’s floor plan. ICON’s Lavacrete is adaptable for ambient temperature and humidity, the altitude of the location as well as the desired printing speed. With the Vulcan II, all mixing, pumping and delivery are automated via the software, thus no manual measuring or dumping is required. Using a layer-by-layer approach, Lavacrete is extruded from the printer head and stacked up according to a digital model. Finished structures are beautiful in their simplicity, long-lasting and afford protection from extreme weather conditions. At New Story, the word “employee” is not used. They prefer to think of themselves as a team of founders. They cherish a shared vision of putting an end to homelessness and consider it a rare privilege to be able to give hope and happiness to so many people.

Oscar and Lora Center: A Haven for Bulgarian Street Dogs

Today, we are going to meet an extraordinary person who grew up in orphanages. Despite the adversity in his childhood, he has managed to channel his negative experiences and transform them into something positive and constructive. With a compassionate heart, Boyko Grenzke established the Oscar and Lora Center in Bulgaria to help injured, unwanted and abandoned dogs. Boyko’s purpose for founding the Center is to better the life of abandoned dogs. Besides taking care of and finding forever homes for them, he works very hard to bring needed resources together and runs the daily operations. Although it’s not an easy task, his childhood background has strengthened his mind and will to overcome the challenges he has faced. "In general, I am the manager of the whole center. There are currently about 70 animals here on-site. We have been here, at this site, for 12 years; it was given to me by a friend of mine, who loves animals and respects my cause. The dogs that are on this site are ours; they belong to our organization and we are responsible for them. Before they came here, they were in poor condition; they were sick, injured. We have cured them with the help of vets from the veterinary clinic we work with; they are now healthy, neutered, chipped and ready for adoption. My goal is to integrate more such people from orphanages to take care of stray animals together, especially those animals that are here in our place. The purpose of our organization is - in addition to rescuing and helping animals in trouble - is to look for adopters." So far, the Center has rescued approximately 320 dogs, and around 250 of them have already been taken in by caring people. Although Boyko doesn’t have a human family, he has the most unconditionally loving beings - rescued dog residents at the Center. The canines have become Boyko’s very best friends. He often speaks with the dogs because he feels they understand him. He always tells them not to worry and that there will always be a solution. He says he will never leave them alone as long as he can walk. We are deeply touched by Boyko Grenzke’s self-sacrifice and loving care for our canine friends. Despite a rough start in life, he has a heart of gold. We thank you, Boyko, and all the volunteers of the Oscar and Lora Center for your full-hearted efforts to help our abandoned and stray animal friends find forever homes.

Successful Refugees and Immigrants Leading the Way, Part 3: Pioneering Surgeon Dr. Munjed Al Muderis

Dr. Munjed Al Muderis was born in Baghdad, Iraq. After graduating, he worked as a surgery resident at Baghdad University Hospital. One day in 1999, while he was on duty at the hospital, he and his colleagues were suddenly ordered by the authorities to immediately perform a very harmful procedure on a group of men who were just brought to the facility or face very grave consequences. Owing to his conscience and firm belief in justice, Dr. Al Muderis did not obey the order. After hiding for a few hours in the hospital, he quietly left, and eventually managed to leave the country. After spending time in the Middle East, Malaysia and Indonesia, he boarded an overcrowded boat headed for Australia. In 2010, Dr. Al Muderis started his career in orthopedic surgery. He is now a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopedic Association, an associate professor in the University of Notre Dame Australia’s School of Medicine and founder of a medical practice called the Osseointegration Group of Australia. He developed a new generation of osseointegration prosthetic limbs that solve many issues that patients faced before. Specifically, he specializes in leg replacements for above and below the knee amputees and is considered a world-leading surgeon in the osseointegration field. Dr. Al Muderis is actively engaged in various practical actions to help refugees and supports Australia’s community sponsorship program for such individuals. He is a patron of the Asylum Seekers Centre, Sanctuary Australia Foundation, New South Wales Amputee Association, and the Australian Red Cross. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Appreciatively present Dr. Al Muderis with the Shining World Compassion Award plus US$20,000 as a humble token of support, (if allowed,) toward the refugee-foundation under his care. Thank you for giving so many the gift of happiness through independent mobility by your skilled hands and making our world more aware of the plight of asylum seekers and refugees. May Allah always bless you abundantly.”

Pradeep Kumar Nath (vegan): Compassionate Protector of All Animals

00:12:28

Pradeep Kumar Nath (vegan): Compassionate Protector of All Animals

As a child, Pradeep Kumar Nath of India loved stray animals and would often bring them home. This compassionate tendency stayed with him as he passed through adolescence and later went to college. Even while he was earning his bachelor’s degree in law at Andhra University in his native city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh state, he pondered dedicating his life to animal rescue work. But in the mid-1990s, Visakhapatnam adopted a policy of putting down stray dogs and pigs. This was something Mr. Nath could not tolerate, and so he formed a nonprofit organization in 1996 that became Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA). With his background in law, he filed a complaint in 1997 with the Animal Welfare Board about the city’s killing of pigs. In 1998, he petitioned the Andhra Pradesh High Court to stop the killing of stray dogs. The court sided with Mr. Nath and authorized VSPCA to coordinate an Animal Birth Control program in Visakhapatnam. Since then, more than 100,000 dogs have been neutered and vaccinated, and an ongoing information campaign has raised public awareness of the efficacy of this approach to reducing the street dog population. Mr. Nath’s dedication to animal welfare began to attract the encouragement and support of generous individuals and foundations. He founded a sanctuary called The Eden of Love and Compassion that is home to hundreds of large and small rescued animals. The shelter has evolved to include specialized areas for birds, cats, cows, dogs, mongooses, monkeys, and star tortoises. In 2000, VSPCA started working with the Forest Department to inform people and maintain the environment so that the birds can arrive safely and enjoy a peaceful stay. Since then, poaching has diminished, and the size of the flocks has increased. Mr. Philip Wollen’s Winsome Constance Kindness Trust in Australia has been sponsoring VSPCA’s Kindness Mobile Restaurant since its inception in 2010. The idea is to prepare vegan food three days a week for some of the most indigent people in Visakhapatnam who care for a dog. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Joyfully present the Shining World Compassion Award to Pradeep Kumar Nath, with a humble contribution of US$10,000 to support the Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals, with love, praises and best wishes. May God always bless you and all involved abundantly.”

Reverend Pastor Robert Munro (vegan) of The Humanitarian Church

Reverend Pastor Robert Munro (vegan) of The Humanitarian Church

Reverend Pastor Robert Munro, or as he likes to be called, Pastor Rob, is the founder of The Saint Francis of Assisi Parish of The Humanitarian Church – a whole food, plant-based vegan house of worship in Erieville, New York, USA. Pastor Rob preaches a vegan sermon there every Sunday. The Humanitarian Church’s mission is “To introduce the Whole Food Plant Based Diet to impoverished, unhealthy communities throughout the world so as to provide freedom from illness… and cease the consumption of animal products so as to honor the commandment, ‘THOU SHALT NOT KILL’.” In 2010, at the age of 50, Pastor Rob’s life changed when he suffered his third stroke. His left side was paralyzed, his left eye was blind, and he was unable to talk or walk. The doctors gave him six months to live. Twenty-six days after becoming vegan, the paralysis on his left side was gone, his vision returned, and he stopped slurring and drooling. Not only did he fully recover, but he also became healthier than ever. Two years after becoming vegan, he experienced a profound spiritual moment, realizing that animal flesh in the body blocks the connection to God. “So, I decided to give everything to the church, live on minimal things, just (vegan) food. Because I need 5,000 lifetimes to make up for the 5,000 animals that died for me to eat them. I can't create life. So the best I can do is give my life in the service of God.” Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present Reverend Pastor Robert Munro with the Shining World Compassion Award, along with a humble loving gift of US$10,000 to support your vegan Humanitarian Church. Lots of love, praises and prayers for your mission’s success, in God’s mercy.”

Successful Refugees and Immigrants Leading the Way, Part 2: Supermodel Alek Wek

Today, we will introduce another outstanding refugee, Alek Wek, who left Sudan as a teenager and is now regarded as one of the world’s foremost supermodels. Compassionate in nature, she is also a humanitarian activist. Alek was born in what is now South Sudan on April 16, 1977, and is the seventh of nine children. To avoid the civil conflict, Ms. Wek and her younger sister were forced to flee to London, UK, in 1991. In 1995, four years after moving to England, Ms. Wek was discovered at an outdoor market in the London suburb of Crystal Palace by a scout for the famous agency, Models 1. Ms. Wek was also named “Model of the Year” by MTV in 1997. In addition to Elle magazine, Ms. Wek also appeared on the cover of many other notable publications, such as Glamour, Cosmopolitan, i-D, Forbes Magazine Africa, and Ebony. Ms. Wek’s influence goes far beyond the fashion arena. The supermodel is also a humanitarian activist and a prominent philanthropist. She has been a missionary for World Vision’s program to end HIV/AIDS, an ambassador for “Doctors Without Borders” and the U.S. Committee for Refugees Advisory Council’s advisory board member on issues related to Sudan. On June 17, 2013, she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador by the UNHCR. She said: “I believe that true beauty comes from inside you and that always shows through.” As a former refugee, Alek Wek has proven to us that regardless of adversity, anything is possible. She has also demonstrated that refugees can make great contributions to the countries they emigrate to and leave a lasting, positive mark on our world.

Unsung Heroes - New South Wales Rural Fire Service’s Volunteer Firefighters

Bushfires are widespread and frequent disasters in Australia. The Australian continent's climate has been slowly drying for millions of years, creating an environment more likely to catch fire. In recent years, global climate change has made Australia hotter and dryer, intensifying the conflagrations even further. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is the primary organization that copes with bushfires in the Australian state of New South Wales and the largest volunteer-based firefighting agency in the world. Starting from a small fire brigade in the town of Berrigan in 1896, currently, NSW RFS has over 72,000 volunteer firefighters and supporters, and 900-plus paid staff. In addition to bush and grass fire fighting missions, the organization also provides bushfire information, district-level bushfire risk management and comprehensive volunteer training. The 2019-20 Australian bushfire season, known as the “Black Summer,” is unprecedented in many ways. Record high temperatures, severe drought and strong winds all contributed to the fire weather. It was the worst bushfire season to date for the state. During this period, thousands of NSW RFS volunteers rolled up their sleeves and engaged in firefighting work without hesitation, putting their lives at risk to protect their communities. Many of them sacrificed holidays or took leave from their jobs or closed their businesses to extinguish fires without pay. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present the New South Wales Rural Fire Service with the Shining World Hero Award, with a humble loving gift of US$10,000 towards furthering the vital work of your life-protecting agency. Lots of love and praises to all the volunteers and prayers for your safety, in God’s mercy.”
