B12, the Vitamin that All Vegans Need to Know

B12, the Vitamin that All Vegans Need to Know

There is no harm in exceeding the recommended amounts or using more than one option. What happens if you do not get enough vitamin B12? A mild deficiency may cause no symptoms at first. If untreated, the typical deficiency symptoms in adults include loss of energy, tingling, numbness, reduced sensitivity to pain or pressure, blurred vision, abnormal gait, sore tongue, and mental problems like depression, memory loss, and personality changes. Signs of a B12 deficiency may take months or years to emerge, and they are usually reversible on the administration of B12. If you suspect you have a deficiency, you should get a diagnosis from a medical practitioner, because each of the named symptoms can also be caused by problems other than a B12 deficiency.

Good Sleep Equals Good Health with Dr. Elie Firzli

Did you know we spend roughly one-fourth to one-third of our life sleeping? Amazing, isn’t it? For example, in a 70-year lifespan, 17 to 23 years would be spent in sleep! Sleep duration varies by age. The ideal sleep amount for an average adult is between 6 to 8 hours. But, of course, optimum sleep length differs by individual.

Pharmacist Huang Shu-Fu on Taking Medicine Wisely, Part 2 of 2

We talked about the possible toxicity of all kinds of medicine. It is the dosage that makes a substance either medicine or poison to our bodies. This concept applies not only to Western medications but also to Chinese herbal medicines. People seeking medical treatment may be diagnosed by a Western medical doctor and a TCM practitioner during the same visit. It is also possible to get a co-prescription for both conventional drugs and herbal medicines. It is especially important in such cases for patients to understand and strictly follow the instructions of the medical professionals. These patients need to take the remedies in the correct order, dosage, and time to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Cholesterol: Friend or Foe?

With all the publicity about the detrimental health effects of cholesterol, people are often surprised to learn that cholesterol is actually important for keeping the body functioning normally. Some may be under the impression that all of the cholesterol in our system comes from the food we eat. In fact, our body is also capable of knowing when to produce the right type of cholesterol to keep the body in a balanced state. So cholesterol isn’t all bad, nor is it all good when there’s too much of the wrong type. Fiber is a key tool to lower cholesterol and is only found in plant-based foods. A vegan diet rich in fiber is beneficial and effective in helping us to keep cholesterol in the normal range.

Documentaries on Plant Power

Documentaries on Plant Power

This program, “Documentaries on Plant Power” explores four American films that focus on the adoption of the vegan diet and resulting health benefits. The first documentary we profile is “What the Health.” The work follows American filmmakers Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn as they uncover the open secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases – the plant-based diet. The work shares knowledge from a wide array of respected vegan American medical experts including Drs. Neal Barnard, Michael Greger, Michael Klaper, Alan Goldhamer, Milton Mills and many others. Our next film is “Forks Over Knives.” The film examines the lives and careers of famed American nutritional biochemist and co-author of the best-selling book “The China Study,” Dr. T. Colin Campbell, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. a surgeon at the renowned Cleveland Clinic in the USA, and how each discovered that plant-based foods are the path to robust health. The film “Forks Over Knives” also follows the lives of several chronically ill patients who took the advice of their doctors and adopted the healing, nutritious vegan diet. The next movie that we will review is “PlantPure Nation.” This documentary film tells the story of key individuals who are on a mission to spread the message regarding the value of the whole foods vegan diet. The production follows the enlightening speech that Dr. T. Colin Campbell gives to the State of Kentucky’s House of Representatives. Following his stirring oration, Dr. Campbell’s son, Nelson Campbell, and then-Kentucky State Representative, Reverend Tom Riner, join forces and propose a pilot program to document the benefits of the plant-based diet. A film that shows just how easy adopting the whole foods vegan diet can be is “Forks Over Knives Presents: The Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue.” The work features Rip Esselstyn, author of “The Engine 2 Diet” and a former firefighter and triathlete, who visits two families and helps them to transition to what he calls a “plant-strong diet!”

The Plant Based Diet Prevents Cancer

The Plant Based Diet Prevents Cancer

That since 1980, the majority of the population worldwide changed to a more animal-based diet. What they found is that there’s a 15 to 25 year lag in the occurrence of cancer. That’s why people didn’t know that the animal-based diet was so detrimental to health because its consequence took 15 to 25 years to occur. Interestingly, they also found that in countries or populations where more grains are consumed, the incidence of 20 common cancers are lowered. This shows that the animal-based diet increases the risk for common cancers, whereas the plant-based diet decreases risk for cancer.

Towel Exercise: Portable Gym for Fitness

A towel can be used for isometric exercises. “ISO” literally means “equal” while “metric” is a measurement. Such routines involve keeping a static position with a contraction of a muscle or muscle group, but the muscles remain at a fixed length. Simply put, the amount of force you use to pull a towel may change, but the angle of your joints does not vary. Isometric exercises are beneficial because they are more gentle on the joints in comparison to weight-bearing exercises, like weightlifting. They are often incorporated into rehabilitation exercise routines, which can help people recovering from procedures like hip surgery, to improve strength without adding too much stress on the affected joint.

Hitting the Brain’s Reset Button to Quit Addictive Substances

Hitting the Brain’s Reset Button to Quit Addictive Substances

How do people become addicted to substances such as drugs or alcohol in the first place? Drugs modify the way in which the brain operates, and these changes make it difficult to quit a drug habit. So what changes occur in the brain that leads to an addiction? The other form of neuroplasticity occurs when the pleasure centers of the brain are taken over. These areas demand more and more of a substance to feel happy and good. The brain also remaps itself so that feeding the addiction becomes the most natural course of action to produce happiness and satisfaction. Neuroplasticity allows the brain to forge new neuron pathways, even after the brain becomes damaged. There are different ways to utilize neuroplasticity when overcoming addiction. One exercise is to recognize when thoughts and cravings for the substance occurs. A person experiencing these thoughts can take a step back and say to themselves, “This is just my brain sending me a false message to drink alcohol.” Eventually, this will lead to a clear awareness that it isn’t “me” having these thoughts, but a brain stuck in a depleting cycle that can be changed. The next step is to build new neural pathways by adopting habits and behaviors that will forge new, constructive neural connections.Meditation has been shown to help train and physically modify the sensitive functioning of the brain.Supreme Master Ching Hai has often expressed her love and understanding for people who struggle with addictions. “Because material today, we don't lack. Therefore, they're charmed, they're seduced into taking drugs, because in taking drugs, sometimes they can have hallucinations and feel comforted for a very short time. But little did they realize the very grave consequences after that. Therefore, meditation is the best way to relieve all this suffering of the people when they want to know God, when they want to know happiness inside. Because our happiness through meditation, through the Light and the music of Heaven, is everlasting. And it's always improving and always more and more happiness, and never has any consequences like the drugs.”

Keeping Teeth Strong And Healthy For Life, Part 1 of 2

Keeping Teeth Strong And Healthy For Life, Part 1 of 2

In recent years, more and more people have started using sugar substitutes like xylitol and stevioside. These sweeteners not only enhance the flavor of your food, but they can also inhibit growth of harmful bacteria and help prevent tooth decay. Also, research conducted in japan found that fiber intake from vegetables and mushrooms can help maintain oral health. Since dietary fiber stimulates the secretion of saliva, and saliva neutralizes the acidity of the mouth and inhibits bacterial growth, a plant-bases diet is an excellent defense against tooth decay.

Interview with Mark Blaxill, Author of “Vaccines 2.0: The Careful Parent’s Guide to Making Safe Vaccination Choices for Your Family”, Part 1 of 2

Do vaccines threaten the health of our child? Well, vaccines are a very controversial topic. I’d like to say I’m not anti-vaccine but I am skeptical of our current vaccination policies. And I believe what the CDC has produced as its recommended schedule of childhood vaccinations is excessive, bloated and unsafe. But, in 1986, the US Congress passed a bill that gave chronic liability exemption to all vaccine manufacturers and doctors who administrate vaccines. And that opened the floodgates to an expansion of the recommended schedule. And so, what we have today, to be fully vaccinated today, is an unprecedented, uncontrolled human experiment on a generation of children. It’s never been tested for safety. And I believe as a totality, it’s unsafe.

Prevent Diabetes the Vegan way

I’ve never seen a type 2 diabetic not be able to recover. Again, it’s a lifestyle choice. Do I want to be diabetic and be out of control and eat and live like everyone else? Or do I not want to be, and become a vegan, exercise, get rid of the sugar in my life, even the natural sugars in my life? These diseases are all correctable. All you have to do is to live properly; starting with your mind, starting with the food, starting with the movement and strengthening of the anatomy of the body.

Promoting Friendly Bacteria in Our Digestive System with Dr. Thomas Lehninger

Promoting Friendly Bacteria in Our Digestive System with Dr. Thomas Lehninger

There are more than 1000 bacterial species in the human gut, some of which are “friendly” as they promote the enhancement of our health. By contrast, other species are not beneficial and can weaken us, even to the point of death. In general, the two types of bacterial species compete with each other like a tug-of-war. If the former wins or becomes dominant, it leads to an optimal health condition. Scientific evidence shows that an imbalance with harmful bacteria predominating, can not only cause intestinal problems, but also negatively affect the immune, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems.
