Atmospheric Water Generation Technology: A Sustainable Solution to the Global Water Crisis

Atmospheric Water Generation Technology: A Sustainable Solution to the Global Water Crisis

On today’s program, we’ll explore the fascinating science behind atmospheric water generation technology, which generates clean drinking water from the air, and could be an emerging alternative to tackle the global water crisis. The Israeli company Watergen has developed an atmospheric drinking water machine that creates water from the air. The company’s device is a great solution to drinking water scarcity and has gained global attention. It brings clean water to any location at any time and also helps to reduce the carbon created by transportation and environmentally harmful plastic waste. “We actually pull it from the air. There’s humidity, there’s water in the atmosphere all around us and we pull it through our machines.” In the United States, retired veteran Moses West, with his Paladin Water Technology, has worked with the Water Rescue Foundation to bring free clean water to Flint, Michigan, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. His AWG units can produce up to 8,400 liters or 2,200 gallons of clean water a day, thus benefiting thousands of people who have no access to clean drinking water. Next, we’ll learn how researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have developed a solar-powered device that can pull water straight from the desert air using the Metal-Organic Framework. “In our latest work, we have the next-generation water harvester. This can work out in the desert where there’s no supply of energy aside from sunlight.” “The key component of this device is this powder. We call it Metal Organic Framework (MOF). It is composed of organic molecules and metals. We leave it overnight because during the night, we have a lot of water content in the atmosphere so the water molecules get inside the framework and stay there.” “We’re going to put the lid on the top of the box to make sure none of the water vapor coming out of the powder can escape from the box. We put the shade on top of the lid to direct the sunlight right on top of the MOF to heat the MOF.” “When this powder heats up, the water molecules come out of the framework, and we can collect them as liquid water.”

Transparent Solar Panels: Advancing Solar Energy Technology

Solar energy is one of the world’s fastest-growing markets in the area of renewable energy due to the unlimited energy resources of the Sun. One of the downsides of solar power is that solar panels require a large amount of space. To overcome this challenge, researchers have been developing new ways to generate electricity from see-through solar glass that may transform the global solar-energy landscape. Why are scientists focusing on transparent glass? Because nowadays, we see glass everywhere, with most modern buildings and skyscrapers having many huge glass windows. If we can adapt the glass surfaces of these buildings to function as “solar farms” to supply energy for the buildings themselves, we can greatly reduce the need for energy derived from fossil fuels.Unlike conventional solar panels, which are photovoltaic (PV) panels that absorb sunlight and convert photons into usable energy, transparent solar panels only capture the invisible UV spectrum while letting the visible spectrum pass through. Using this simple concept, teams around the world are developing technologies to create various types of transparent solar panels. The two main types of transparent solar panels include partial and full transparent panels. The German company Heliatek GmbH is one of the first companies to develop partially transparent solar panels. Onyx Solar, a solar energy company in Ávila, Spain manufactures transparent photovoltaic (PV) glass for buildings. One of them is Ubiquitous Energy, a US-based company established by a group of Michigan State University researchers. On the other side of the world in Australia a company named ClearVue shows through many of its projects that its transparent solar technology is working. Last but not least on today's program is the fully transparent solar glass developed by a team of Korean researchers led by Professor Joondong Kim of Incheon National University. This breakthrough is the first solar cell that’s fully transparent, thus allowing it to be implemented in electronics with relative ease.

Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Fashionable Alternative without the Harmful Effects of Mining

Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Fashionable Alternative without the Harmful Effects of Mining

Diamonds are chiefly known for their use in jewelry, but most diamonds are used in industry. Diamonds are expensive because these high-quality gems are in short supply. It takes billions of years deep in the earth’s crust under conditions of intense heat and pressure to cause carbon atoms to crystallize and form diamonds. In addition, diamond mining is a complex and costly process that has many detrimental effects on the environment, including soil erosion, water contamination, deforestation, and ecosystem destruction.Lab-grown diamonds, also known as man-made diamonds or synthetic diamonds, were first created in 1954, offering a more affordable and eco-friendlier alternative to mined diamonds. It’s anticipated that lab-grown diamonds will be a major part of global jewelry’s future. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds that look and feel just like natural diamonds. They also consist of pure carbon in the same cubic crystalline form as mined diamonds. The only difference between the two is that natural diamonds often contain a tiny amount of nitrogen, while man-made diamonds do not.The two primary methods for producing lab diamonds are the high-pressure high temperature (HPHT) process and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Three methods are used to create an HPHT environment for growing diamonds: the belt press, the cubic press, and the bars press. HPHT diamond technology, although a great invention for growing high-purity colorless diamonds, requires long growth times and high energy costs. Enter chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a newer method to alleviate the problems of HPHT by using a low-pressure environment.Nowadays, both the HPHT and CVD techniques can produce colorless and flawless diamonds but the CVD method can produce much larger colorless diamonds. It typically takes several days to grow one crystal diamond with both methods; however, scientists at the Australian National University and RMIT University have found a way to speed up the process into just a matter of minutes and at room temperature. British multi-millionaire and environmentalist Dale Vince, founder of Sky Diamond, has created the world's first zero-impact diamonds.
