Previously, in Part 1 of 2 of Julia Evans’ near-death experience, Canadian registered nurse Julia described how an ordinary shift at the hospital turned into a medical emergency when she went into anaphylactic shock — a severe allergic reaction — from a bouquet of lilies. As her airway closed and a medication error sent her heart into crisis, Julia died and found herself in a dark, silent void — a place without a body, without pain, and where she heard the voice of her mother, who had died when Julia was three.
She briefly returned to her body, watching the medical team work on her from above, before slipping away again. And in that moment, she was propelled into another layer. And that next layer was Light. The Light is brighter than anything you could ever expect. It’s like every color in the world, all in one. But it’s not just Light. There’s so much Love in that that it radiates Light. And it’s like you’re gifted the greatest gift. And it’s self-love. And it’s like everything in my heart healed. I healed. You’re gifted knowing, and then you’re gifted love. So then you’re able to gift love and receive love, and that’s that infinity sign. And I actually wear that infinity sign on my finger. But it’s that receiving and giving, back and forth, because it’s like you finally found it. Within this Light, everyone was there, everybody that had passed before me. It was calming. It was tranquil. It was the most beautiful thing. If anybody has a child, they’ll understand what I mean by this, is when you first look into the eyes of your child and the amount of love that you look into those eyes, that is just starting the feeling of what that Light is. It’s the most incredible thing.
Back on Earth, the team continued compressions and defibrillation. Julia felt herself hit back into her body like falling onto her back. When she opened her eyes, she began taking in the scene around her—but what she saw at the end of the bed only deepened the sense that she was still between worlds.
And this image at the end of my bed, now my conscious brain knows who this is, and it was the emergency charge nurse who had come to the code [the hospital’s emergency resuscitation call], and he had this long, luscious hair that he always put up in a bun. But in that moment, it was that, are you Jesus? And His hands, they were open, and in my mind, I was like, do I follow You? And, I didn’t know if I needed to follow Him to be saved to follow His path, or is it Buddha, the same image like that bun on top of the head. Am I in Nirvana? Have I been to Nirvana? Is there a choice here? Am I able to choose? And it really played on both sides of my brain about what these realities are. And instead of following Jesus with His hands open, it was like that moment gave me an opportunity and a choice. And I instinctively looked down. That’s when I came into my body. And I still saw light all around me. And even when I’m saying this, like every hair on my body is standing on edge, because I can feel it. I can feel that Light and that Love. And it just, like, radiated around me. It felt like it was within me, but, like, it just radiated out. And then all the stuff on the outside also radiated in. It was this, like, beautiful moment.
And this woman beside me, she was an ICU [intensive care unit] nurse, and she put her hand on me, and she said, “I brought you back.” And so it was so light, it was like I couldn’t see anything else of this world. This woman put her hand on me, and she said, “I brought you back.” And her name’s Cheryl, and that’s my mom’s name, and she’s short with really short hair, and I remember looking at the man in front of me that I thought was Jesus, and then I turned to her, and it was my mom. I haven’t felt my mom since 1983. I heard her in the darkness, and now I see her, and like my human brain cannot handle that, and I looked at her, and I put my hand on her, and so much emotion went through me, like, you already left me. What do you mean you brought — like so much went through my head, like why, why couldn’t I stay with you?
Julia then noticed the defibrillator pads on her chest and the electrocardiogram leads attached to her body. Reality came back in layers, like being reborn into the world. Recently, at Easter service, when her priest knocked on church doors in remembrance of Christ’s resurrection, Julia left her body again and asked Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian) if she had a choice that day. And He said, “Yes. You chose to come back. Now live what you’re supposed to do.” Julia’s experience transformed her understanding of life and death, leading her to bridge Western medicine and holistic healthcare.
There’s Heaven on Earth. I can honestly say there is Heaven on Earth, despite what people go through, and I’ve gone through a lot of really horrendous things in my day. But even the fact that the Sun rises and sets and that a moon comes up, and sometimes it’s full and bright, and sometimes it’s gone, but yet you still feel it. These are pieces of Heaven that we take for granted. I know a lot of people out there try to find what that Light is. And just remember that the Light doesn’t come from something outside, but it comes from within you. It’s not about always searching for it, but it’s about breathing it in. And once you can love yourself first, everything else will follow. (Life After Life NDE)
