Christmas Animals from Around the World

Christmas Day is now here. As you might have noticed, around this time of year there are plenty of cute animals representing the Christmas spirit in TV shows, films, greeting cards, decorations and so on. These Christmas icons have developed over time based on myths and stories from different cultures. We reindeer are the animals that pull Santa Claus’s sled and guide him all over the world. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a fictional reindeer created in 1939 by Robert Lewis May. Aside from reindeer, many other animals are closely connected with Christmas, including partridges and turtle doves which are featured in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” In most Western ecclesiastical traditions, December 25 is considered the First Day of Christmas and ends 12 days later on January 5. In this context, the partridge symbolizes Jesus Christ, a Gift sent by God! Doves are frequently mentioned in the Holy Bible and are symbols of peace, love and loyalty. Britain’s national bird is frequently depicted on festive greeting cards and Christmas gift wrap. This originates from the postman delivering Christmas cards in the 19th century. As a symbol of divine sacrifice, the English robin is also closely related with a legend of Christ’s birth. On the first Christmas, it is said that the night was extremely cold. The Baby Jesus slept happily, thanks to the robin. According to European folklore, roosters were assigned to announce the glorious birth of Jesus to the people. Around midnight, the first rooster cried out in a human voice, “Christ is born!” The second followed, “In Bethlehem!” The final Christmas animal, the Yule goat, is not a real one. In Sweden, the goat was viewed as an invisible spirit that came before Christmas to check that all the preparations for the holiday were finished. Supreme Master Ching Hai is the Santa Claus for Her adorable dogs on Christmas Day! Many kinds of animals worldwide are connected to Christmas, and I can assure you that each species associated with this holy day is quite proud of this distinction!

Supreme Master Ching Hai (Vegan) on the Harmful Effects of Meat, Part 18 - Lessons Learned from Animals

As most humans have lost the ability to telepathically communicate with each other and other beings, we do not know how animals think and feel. Fortunately, there are spiritual practitioners and animal communicators who can perceive the thoughts and feelings of animals. Today, we’ll present some of these people’s personal experiences encountering animals. “(It scared me also, that I can talk to the animals.) Why? It's good! (Yeah, because I didn't expect that they can respond me in the psychic. Sometimes when I pass by on the street and the dogs come by and I can hear his feeling or what he wants. Like sometimes I talk to them, but they are very scared. They keep distance from people, you know, they have broken heart, and they can hardly believe anymore that people can mean goodness to them.)” “(Recently, I went to a conference hall in Greece, and previously, it was a slaughterhouse.) Ah! Yes! (And I started feeling uncomfortable, and had pictures of panic and fright, and I didn't know why. I felt the pain and the panic. So, I started reciting the (Holy) Names, and I really cried for them, and I saw Your presence there. And their souls, I felt that their souls were liberated. They were previously entrapped in pain, in a level of pain. And through the reciting of the (Holy) Names and the prayer, they were liberated. ) Yeah, wonderful! (And I was grateful, and they were grateful immediately.) Oh, I am grateful to you, that you were there. (Thank You!) They were liberated... You bring love and blessing to them. (Yes, thanks to You, thanks to You. I brought You there, and it was such peace all over the place, and I immediately felt better, so I knew, I knew.)” “(I’d like to share something about the animals. I used to go and visit the cows. There was a field nearby with the cows. And sometimes I just needed to get something out, something off my chest and I’d cry from the bottom of my heart. And whenever I felt that way, the cows, I’d go and visit them, and they’d come right up to the fence every single time. And they also, they said a few things. They said they were very grateful for Supreme Master Television, for the work that You’re doing, for the work that all the disciples are doing. And sometimes I’d see one or two of the cows crying. And they said that it wasn’t because they knew of their fate, that they were going to die. They were crying for mankind.) They really feel sorry for humans, they don’t hate humans for hurting them even, the animals. When we’re hurting them, they are praying for us. They’re forgiving and they feel sorry for us so much. Because they feel that humans are so ignorant, they really didn’t know what they’re doing. So they feel very sorry. Yeah, so it’s good that you have such experience, very profound.”

Animal Praises: “The Star” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”

Animal Praises: “The Star” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”

Today, December 24th, is Christmas Eve. We are going to present two cartoon films about this joyous and holy holiday season featuring our legendary animal friends: “The Star” and the 1948 “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The film “The Star” transports us back to “Nazareth, 9 months B.C.” A kind and loving Mary is visited by an angel telling her that she has been chosen to bear the Son of God, the Messiah. Just at that moment, a new star rises in the sky glowing brightly in the night, preempting a Light that will uplift the whole world. Our main character is a young donkey who is chained to a grinding wheel, walking around and around in a never-ending circle. Donkey’s best friend, Dave the Dove, is determined to help make his dreams come true. When they see the new star rising, they know that their time has come. Finally, they escape, chased vigorously by the miller. Donkey hurt his ankle during the pursuit and ends up looking for refuge in Mary and Joseph’s courtyard, where the couple have just gotten married. Directed by Timothy Reckart, “The Star” is a beautiful 2017 animation film that retells the Nativity of Jesus from the animals’ point of view and is a “must-see” for Christmas audiences. In 1939, Robert Lewis May worked for Montgomery Ward, a popular department store, and was assigned to write a “cheery” Christmas book for shoppers. Thus, the most famous reindeer, Rudolph, was created. In 1948, Robert May’s brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, adapted the story into a song that immediately became a number one hit. Since then, the story has been published in various books and made into many movies. Today, we are going to present the short film made in 1948, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the very first telling of the story on screen. Directed and produced by Max Fleischer, this inspiring short film shows us that when we are different from others, it may be a special gift from God!

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 1 of 2

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 1 of 2

Three-D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process that builds 3D objects by layering materials one by one from a digital file. Compared to conventional manufacturing, including injection molding and subtractive production, 3D printing is more cost-effective as it doesn’t require expensive molds. It also uses less material, energy and labor, generates less waste, and is faster for both production and revision. One of the most exciting and game-changing 3D printing application fields is veterinary medicine. Thanks to 3D printing technologies, these animals now have a much greater chance of living an extended and healthy life. In December 2014, a young male chestnut-mandibled toucan named Grecia in Costa Rica was a tragic victim of animal abuse and lost the upper half of his beautiful beak. Grecia accepted the artificial beak made of special nylon, and he has become a happy bird. He shook off his depression and quickly learned to use his new beak to bathe, eat and preen himself. In July 2019, Lorraine Young noticed her beloved Andy, a seven-year-old dachshund, was unable to walk on all four legs. Andy became the first canine patient with this disease to benefit from 3D printing technology. The veterinary team created an exact 3D printed replica of Andy’s spine from his CT scan images. As the 3D model could bend and move like Andy’s actual spine, doctors could examine it and decide how to proceed during the operation. Andy’s operation and recovery went very well: When Lorraine went to visit him with some family members a few days after the procedure, Andy ran to them – wobbly, but wagging his tail and giving kisses to everyone’s delight.

One Planet Pizza - Good for You, Good for the Animals, Good for the Planet, Part 1 of 2

One Planet Pizza - Good for You, Good for the Animals, Good for the Planet, Part 1 of 2

Today, we are excited to bring you the story of the UK’s first, multi-award winning frozen vegan pizza company, One Planet Pizza, proudly co-founded by a father-and-son team, Mike and Joe Hill. Being a pioneer on many fronts, One Planet Pizza is the UK’s first ever crowd-funded 100% vegan food company. "Well, pizza, as they say, is one of the world’s most favorite foods! In the U.K. alone, it’s worth £480 million, and our aim is just to get perhaps one percent of that market, so that would be tens of thousands of people eating vegan pizza, rather than pizzas with meat and dairy." Mike not only saw the opportunity to introduce great pizzas to the market, but he also realized that people desperately needed better vegan alternatives, to assist them to step forward and bravely make a positive switch in their diet. "One of the phrases we use all the time is something called 'Pizza with Purpose.' So the idea is that we use pizza as an agent of change and it’s a way of encouraging people to eat less dairy, less meat." Mike’s son, Joe Hill, calls himself the “Chief Pizza Distributor.”Together with their like-minded shareholders, they are leading the company to be even more sustainable on many levels. Packaging is one of their outstanding achievements. Their ‘Zero to landfill packaging’ means all their pizza boxes are 100% compostable and all other packaging is fully recyclable. All the company’s recyclable wastes are shredded on site, given another life through composting and other eco-friendly processes. Bravo, One Planet Pizza, for leading by example, using innovative community supported fund-raising strategies, and putting so much hard work into developing such a successful product for the growing healthy vegan food market. You have made clear that every slice that your customers eat is a statement that they care for the environment and the lives of all animals.

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 2 of 2

In today’s program, I will introduce more touching stories about how 3D printing helps animals and the innovative 3D bioprinting technologies that could help hasten the end of the vile practice of animal testing in the future. In 2009, Seemore the green sea turtle was hit by a boat propeller in the Florida Keys. This hindered her ability to dive normally to find food in the wild and she could no longer live independently. After a computed tomography (CT) scan in July 2017, the team examined Seemore’s shell structure and the damage, and then selected the exo-shell design. The considerate project team attached the 3D printed prototypes to Seemore’s shell using Velcro during the testing process, so the prototypes could be easily removed, adjusted or reattached without moving Seemore out of her tank. Thanks to the team’s labor of love and Traner Knott’s loving care around the clock, Seemore can now happily dive like a normal turtle with her 3D printed backpack. Many new cosmetics, drugs, vaccines, and other products are often tested on animal models to determine their supposed efficacy and safety before human trials or being released into the market. There have been increasing protests against the unethical, inhumane and useless practice of animal testing in recent years, and compassionate scientists are responding with an eye-opening alternative - 3D bioprinting. Since the EU banned animal testing in cosmetics products in 2009, bioprinting human skin tissues for cosmetics testing has become the primary area of interest. In addition to skin tissues, other biocompatible human tissues can also be bioprinted. The organ-on-a-chip technology has the advantages of rapid response and precision control, hence researchers can test new medicine cheaper and quicker than animal models. On the other hand, the cool and creative 3D bioprinting technologies have great potential to save countless animal lives as researchers turn away from animal testing. May these life-saving technologies rapidly become more efficient and cheaper to benefit more animals, in God’s blessings.

For the Love of Animals: Australia’s Honorable Mark Pearson (vegetarian), Part 2 of 3

For the Love of Animals: Australia’s Honorable Mark Pearson (vegetarian), Part 2 of 3

Mark believes that, ultimately, there is only one way to truly protect the lives of animals: the widespread adoption of a vegan lifestyle. In addition to improving animal welfare, this shift would have many other benefits for our planet. “If we move towards a plant-based diet, obviously that is going to bring enormous harmony and peace and compassion. It will just allow our society to become less violent. So, I think my view is that we are actually moving that way. I mean in some countries, intensive farming is proliferating, but I think it's doomed. It's going to fall over, because, like the Paris Summit said, the strain on the environment and our resources, putting aside animal welfare, it is illogical in terms of the survival of the planet, to keep going in that direction. So just scientifically, business thinking, we have to move away from it.” For decades, humans have conducted behavioral experiments on animals, hoping to discover more about the way they think and act. Mr. Pearson shares his views on such animal experimentation. “But I think us, the closer you come to the sense of awe and delight in seeing the mystery and beauty of an animal in its majesty, and not wanting to control it, then you become a much better person and the best in you is nourished by that relationship. So, I think that's very important.” Mark believes that if people truly understood the immense suffering that meat consumption causes for animals, they would immediately adopt a plant-based lifestyle. He wishes that all beings on Earth, even the animals, were vegan. “And the sinister thing is that in most countries, people sit down to their meat with their knife and fork, cutting into it with their knife and fork, unaware that far in the distance in a valley somewhere, animals are being slaughtered, and your action here is implicated. You are connected to that. You connect to that sorrow, to that fear. And it's in the food you're eating. So, what's happening to you when you consume the flesh of another who's suffered fear and distress?”

Farmhouse Garden Animal Home: From Slaughter to Sanctuary, Part 3 of 3

When Edith and Mike first changed from operating a beef operation to running an animal sanctuary, they knew they would face many challenges. But they also knew deep in their hearts that it was the right thing to do. "I think for him (Mike), once he made the decision that he didn’t want to slaughter the animals anymore, it was just, 'That’s it.' He couldn’t do it anymore. We knew we were going to face some backlash, and we knew it was going to be difficult. But you just have to push through it because you know it’s the right thing to do. Yeah, he (Mike) definitely is really brave and compassionate. For me, ethically I know and spiritually that it’s the right thing to do. You feel more in line with your values in terms of the way that you live. I can’t imagine sitting down for dinner and having an animal on my plate. It just feels so wrong to me now. And I think once you make that connection, it’s hard to continue living an ethically and spiritually fulfilled life while you’re also eating animals." Many people are deeply grateful to Mike and Edith for sparing the lives of the innocent cows, and for founding an animal sanctuary where they can live. In fact, as soon as the sanctuary was created, volunteers offered to help. The story behind Farmhouse Garden Animal Home has touched the hearts of many, including non-vegans. And the sanctuary has received considerable media coverage. "It feels amazing to look at the animals and know that they’re safe and they’ll always be cared for. It’s such a fulfilling feeling knowing that I was a part of something that I think has inspired a lot of people and has helped so many animals. So I’m really happy with how far we’ve come and I’m proud of all the work that we’ve done. It’s a good feeling." Mike, Edith, and all the others involved with Farmhouse Garden Animal Home, we applaud your courage and determination to do what you feel is right. May you be blessed with good health, long lives and continued success.

Russian director’s documentary on animal sentience touches hearts and wins awards

Russian filmmaker presents animals’ personal lives in new documentary. Gunda, named after a sow on a real Norwegian farm, is directed by vegetarian Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky and executively produced by vegan Oscar-winning American actor Joaquin Phoenix. The work has no narration or actors and follows the daily lives of Gunda and her piglets, a one-legged chicken and several cows on a farm. Viewers are indirectly reminded of the cruelty behind meat-eating as the camera captures each cast member’s heart-warming personality.Mr. Kossakovsky commented, “So many people stopped eating meat (due to the film),” while Mr. Phoenix described the work as being “of profound importance and artistry.”The feature has won awards, including Best Documentary at the 2020 Stockholm Film Festival. Bravo, Victor Kossakovsky, Joaquin Phoenix and all involved in Gunda’s production. May humanity soon awaken to our animal friends’ nobility, under the loving watch of the Providence.

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 1 of 3

00:13:24

Dr. Anita Krajnc (vegan) and the Animal Save Movement, Part 1 of 3

Today, we have the honor of meeting Dr. Krajnc, the Canadian co-founder of Toronto Pig Save and the worldwide Animal Save Movement. Anita is a former political science professor at Queen’s University in the province of Ontario, Canada, who has studied how social movements move forward through public education. She is also a vegan. “Toronto Pig Save started doing 3 vigils a week in July 2011, and what we did was we would bear witness to the pigs on a traffic island when the trucks would stop. It’s such a powerful thing to meet the animals before they go to the slaughterhouse and to see their faces and look into their eyes. We called it bearing witness.” One of the devoted volunteers at Toronto Pig Save was the late Regan Russell. A former model, she had been advocating for animal rights since 1977. In late 2019, a bill was introduced in Ontario’s legislature making it illegal to interact with animals while they are being transported and expose the violence against animals in slaughterhouses and farms. Anita, Regan, and many other animal rights activists vehemently opposed the bill. It was passed into law on June 17, 2020. Two days later, it was a very hot day, and Regan and the other activists were giving water to the pigs on the trucks. Regan stood for several minutes in the road in front of the slaughterhouse to stop a truck so that the pigs could get water. The truck accelerated unexpectedly. Regan was killed. Vigils were held all over the world for Regan Russell. This beautiful soul’s compassion and her belief in justice and peace for all animals will always be remembered. We thank Dr. Anita Krajnc and her fellow animal advocates for their courage, and hope we can all work together to make the Earth a kinder and more beautiful place. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present Dr. Anita Krajnc with the Shining World Compassion Award, with a humble, loving gift of US$15,000 towards your noble organizations, Toronto Pig Save and the Animal Save Movement. Lots of love, praises and prayers for your safety and success, in God’s mercy.”

Animals in the Snow Wonderland

Animals in the Snow Wonderland

Today we will explore incredible winter lands with amazing wild animals. Penguins, the iconic animal of the Antarctic, are well known for their endurance in extreme conditions, with the emperor penguin able to withstand temperatures of -30°C with winds blasting at 200 kilometers per hour. Generally speaking, warm-blooded animals that inhabit cold regions are fairly big. Large animals have a smaller surface to volume ratio and thus relatively less surface area through which to lose heat. The smallest Antarctic penguin, the rockhopper, weighs an average of 2.5 kilograms, and the largest, the emperor penguin, is around 30 kilograms in weight. Male emperor penguins also huddle together in groups of several thousand to survive the biting wind and relentless cold. Scientists have recorded temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius within the huddle. Keep warm guys! Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, truly love the snow, particularly the young ones. They roll about and play in it. The youngsters make snowballs, carry them around, and have fun with them. They even play a game of trying to take each other’s snowballs! These macaques are great leapers and tree climbers, which they take advantage of to move around when there is thick snow. To cope with the icy-cold temperatures, snow leopards are protected by thick gray or creamy yellow hair with grayish-black spots. Their broad feet, which are covered with fur, act as natural snowshoes. They use their long tails as blankets to protect sensitive body parts against the biting mountain chill. These tremendous jumpers can cross up to 15 meters in one leap. The snow leopard is listed as an endangered species, with only about 3,500 to 7,000 left in the wild.It has been my pleasure to show you how we animals adapt to the cold winter with heavy snow. Despite our amazing ability to withstand the freezing temperatures, we would much appreciate it if you would take extra care when walking through our habitats to not disturb us during our most vulnerable time in winter.

The Trinity of Plant-Based Education: Liberation from an Animal Diet

00:14:19

The Trinity of Plant-Based Education: Liberation from an Animal Diet

On today’s program, we review three different books, all of which express the same powerful message for the physical, emotional, and ecological benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. These three books are, “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer, “The Engine 2 Diet” by Rip Esselstyn, and “The China Study” by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II, MD. The author discusses what it means to eat meat, coming from an inhumanely industrialized system, which causes immense suffering to animals and rampant destruction of the environment. “Eating Animals” quickly became a New York Times bestseller, and later formed the basis for a documentary of the same title. The film is directed by Christopher Quinn, and narrated and co-produced by renowned actress, Natalie Portman, who, after reading the book, immediately switched from a vegetarian diet to being fully vegan. Our next book is, “The Engine 2 Diet” by Rip Esselstyn. Rip is a former Austin, Texas, USA firefighter, professional triathlete and health activist. Through “the Engine 2 Diet” program he developed, he transformed the wellness of the entire Austin Fire Department. “The Engine 2 Diet” is a low-fat, plant-based plan that seeks to prevent or even reverse illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. For over 40 years, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, has been on the forefront of nutrition research and the advocacy of a low-fat, whole food, plant-based diet. His legacy, “The China Study,” is one of the largest, most comprehensive studies on the relationship between nutrition and cancer, heart, and metabolic diseases ever conducted. It was launched through a partnership between Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, using data collected over a 20-year time span.
