It is our honor to have this opportunity to share with you an ancient Chinese tradition, the Dragon Boat Festival, which has been around for more than 2,300 years and takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. During the festival, traditional customs include Dragon Boat races, hanging calamus or wormwood over doors to repel insects, children wearing five-colored string bracelets for blessings, and most important of all is zongzi. It is made with glutinous rice using a variety of fillings, wrapped in a leaf either as a pillow or four-cornered shape, and tied with plant-based or cotton twine.

Benjamin Timmler, a teenager, from Hof in Bavaria, Germany, wrote a vegan cookbook called “Grün Kerlchen” or “The Little Green Guy” at age of 14. What started as a school project, made its way onto a crowdfunding platform so that more people could benefit from not only the recipes, but the message behind the book, which is to love and care for animals, the environment and ourselves. Whoever made a contribution to help with the publication of the vegan cookbook received a printed version of it. And so if we can somehow stem that by changing our diets and our exercise patterns, it will save us a lot of livers for patients who have congenital diseases or diseases that were certainly nothing to do with their diets or their lifestyle. Dairy, in particular, is a major cause of gas, belching, reflux, and abdominal pain. So, I think the dairy elimination can start to do wonders for patients who have upper gastrointestinal illnesses. Plant-based diets are hugely filled with fiber and nutrients that encourage water excretion by the colon.

Now, the only cause of death that it doesn't have any influence over is an accidental death, like a car crash. So the plant-based diet is really great for health, but not a lot of medical institutions promote it. My hope is that in the years to come, with the increased knowledge that we have, that more and more medical professionals will start to include the plant-based diet within their recommendations.

A team of scientists from Harvard University’s School of Public Health in the US completed a meta-study in October 2016 using data from 131342 participants who were tracked for more than 26 years in two separate medical studies to determine how diet relates to wellness and longevity. As reported in the “Journal of the American Medical Association,” the researchers concluded that replacing animal protein with plant protein was associated with a decreased risk of death. The most important factor in maintaining health and vitality has got to be what we put inside our bodies, and luckily that’s also what we’ve got the most control over.
