Buddhism’s Sacred Scripture: The Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Dharma, Chapter 4, Part 2 of 6

Buddhism’s Sacred Scripture: The Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Dharma, Chapter 4, Part 2 of 6

We continue the parable today to find out what happens when the prodigal son returns to his father's house…. “World-Honored One, at that time the impoverished son drifted from one kind of employment to another until he came by chance to his father’s house. When the impoverished son saw how great was his father’s power and authority, he was filled with fear and awe and regretted he had ever come to such a place. Having thought in this way, he raced from the spot. At that time the rich old man, spied his son and recognized him immediately. Thereupon he dispatched a bystander to go after the son as quickly as possible and bring him back. The impoverished son, alarmed and fearful, cried out in an angry voice, ‘Why am I being seized?’ The father, observing this from a distance, spoke to the messenger, saying, ‘I have no need of this man. Don’t force him to come here.’ Why did he do that? He knew very well that this was his son, but as a form of expedient means he refrained from saying to anyone, ‘this is my son.’”

How Suffering Can Lead Us to Happiness, Part 2 of 3 Sydney, Australia – March 16, 1993

If we do not practice this, if we do not find a way to recognize our greatest inheritance, no one would say anything to us. Absolutely no one has the right to say anything. It’s only us, we, who suffer the loss that we have a great treasure and we don’t use it. And we suffer so much, or we have some happiness, but only very partial, very short-lived, and sometimes it is the cause of the next sorrow of tomorrow. If we do not get enlightenment, we do not know our Supreme Power, we deny ourselves the greatest privilege that even angels envy, even small gods in lower heavenly regions are jealous of, and that is a pity. We are the only ones to be blamed. And so, since I am here already, due to my fellow practitioners’ kindness and invitation, I am willing to share with you the way to regain your greatness, to experience your true Self, to have all your wishes fulfilled, and to live a more worthy life.

Today, He is still loved and venerated as “The Great Master.” Today, we are honored to read you excerpts from the letters of the Great Master who shared some of His priceless spiritual guidance on meditation, that is, on how one’s soul can overcome the temporal world and ascend to a higher spiritual realms. “To give up worldly pleasures, to control the senses and bring the attention in one center by controlling the wild runs of the mind while still alive and kicking, is not an easy task. But what is it that with love and faith man cannot accomplish? You strengthen your will power and go ahead. Success is sure. Remember that once the seed of Nam has been planted, it must become a tree and bear fruit.”

From “Spiritual Gems” – Spiritual Letters from Hazur Maharaj Sawan Singh Ji (vegetarian) to Disciples and Seekers, Part 2 of 2

We now continue with letter 115, a message of spiritual advice and encouragement from the Great Master in reply to a devoted disciple. This letter was published in the treasured collection titled “Spiritual Gems.” “No article of this world, nor friends nor relations go with us; even our body does not accompany us after death. Then why worry about those who will not accompany us?” “The [inner Heavenly] Sound Current and the Master are within you. You need no other company. …The greater the solitude, the better. There is no better luck than solitude.” “Try to lift the veil within and try to taste the spiritual joy, compared to which all the worldly designs and inventions are insignificant and valueless. He who has torn the veil within and brought the mind under control, has conquered all the world and the whole world is under his order.”

How Suffering Can Lead Us to Happiness, Part 1 of 3 Sydney, Australia – March 16, 1993

“Now, in this world, we have found a lot of suffering as well as happiness, and most of the people would like to know why there is suffering and how to find happiness. The question to me is not to eliminate so much of the suffering and not to gain more happiness but to gain the Supreme Power, through which we see happiness and suffering as just a stage play, and then we will see things in life just as we see the movies. We may have a little emotion through the characters in the movies, but we will not be overwhelmed by this emotion, and get drowned in this emotion. So, therefore, the difference between a so-called enlightened person and a so-called non-enlightened person is the strength, is the outlook for the different phenomena in this world as well as the world beyond.” “After enlightenment, you will be just the same as before, but there is only one difference: it’s that you accept everything that comes to you, and everything that’s given to you is holy, and everyone else is holy…. So long as we still want to seek peace and happiness within ourselves, and to grant this happiness to other people, we need enlightenment.”

From the Sacred Texts of Hòa Hảo Buddhism: "The Dead Cannot Eat" and "Looking for the Buddha"

Hòa Hảo Buddhism is a religion based on the teachings of the Buddha. It was founded by Prophet Huỳnh Phú Sổ in 1939. It is named after the Hòa Hảo village where it was established in Châu Đốc Province of Âu Lạc, also known as Vietnam. The two words “Hòa Hảo” imply harmony and goodness. Today we present excerpts of the teachings of Prophet Huỳnh Phú Sổ. “THE DEAD CANNOT EAT” “After that, he recited a poem titled "Be Filial" and advised everyone to make offerings with vegan food: Repay the ancestors’ favor the Buddhist way, by offering vegan food to your deceased parents. That is the pure and benevolent practice and their souls will be light and liberated.” “LOOKING FOR THE BUDDHA” “One day, my father appeared in my dream and scolded me: ‘A living Buddha is here on Earth already, and you still don't practice spiritually? Let me tell you. You keep chasing after fame and gain, later if you suffer, don't complain, and it will be too late to regret. This is the final age. If you don't practice spiritually, you will regress into a suffering realm forever.’”

Jewish Scholar Asa Keisar’s True Vegan World Revolution, Part 1 of 3

Jewish Scholar Asa Keisar’s True Vegan World Revolution, Part 1 of 3

The respected Asa Keisar is an Israeli religious scholar who’s on a mission of spreading veganism all across Israel and the world. His speeches feature statements from the Holy Torah about the incorrectness of consuming animal products, especially in our modern world. Another example of his duly gained recognition is a sincere letter he received from the President of Israel, His Excellency Reuven “Ruvi” Rivlin, who called Asa Keisar’s work “nothing less than a true revolution.” Through this interview, we’ll learn more about Asa Keisar’s noble efforts as he clarifies how the most essential holy Jewish texts have always been pointing to the right way of treating our animal co-inhabitants, namely with compassion and respect. “I make the connection between the Judaism and veganism. I wrote a book about this subject. The name of the book in Hebrew is ‘Velifnei Iver Hashalem,’ ‘In Front of the Blind.’ ‘The blind,’ the meaning is the people, something like the blind – we don’t know what’s happening to the animals, about what the Torah says, about the tza’ar ba’alei chayim (suffering of living creatures) and all of these subjects. This is a passage from the Bible.”

How Suffering Can Lead Us to Happiness: Questions and Answers, Part 3 of 3 # 333 Sydney, Australia – March 16, 1993

“As You said, enlightenment will cause us to ignore everything such as wealth, illness or a higher position in society. …but how about illness? We suffer every minute.” We just do not feel so much suffering the way we did before enlightenment, that’s all. We will tend to our body as much as we can. We give it as much comfort as it needed, and we give the medical care and all that. Should we have to suffer from illnesses, our patience, our enduring power, increases, and therefore the illness doesn’t bother us much. I do not say we ignore it completely; it doesn’t bother us that much. And even after enlightenment, many of our illnesses just disappear; it is not miracles. It is because our super-power Self awakens and regulates some of the misconstructing part in our body and destroys it. So, many people found themselves with no more cancer, and even though they were already put on the operating table, and anesthetic needles were already admitted to them, then the doctors found to their amazement that there was no more cancer there, so they were pushed outside again. So we don’t ignore the illness; illness seems to ignore enlightened people.

The Songs of Kabir (vegetarian): Selections from 1 to 26, Part 2 of 2

Music is all around it, and there the heart partakes of the joy of the Infinite Sea. Kabir says: “Dive thou into that Ocean of sweetness: thus let all errors of life and of death flee away.” Behold how the thirst of the five senses is quenched there! And the three forms of misery are no more! Kabir says: “It is the sport of the Unattainable One: look within, and behold how the moon-beams of that Hidden One shine in you.” There falls the rhythmic beat of life and death: Rapture wells forth, and all space is radiant with light. There the Unstruck Music is sounded; it is the music of the love of the three worlds. There millions of lamps of sun and of moon are burning; There the drum beats; and the lover swings in play. There love-songs resound, and light rains in showers; and the worshipper is entranced in the taste of the heavenly nectar. Look upon life and death; there is no separation between them, The right hand and the left hand are one and the same.

The Songs of Kabir (vegetarian): Selections from 1 to 26, Part 1 of 2

Kabir was a great Indian poet who was fully devoted to the Creator. He was a Saint who not only endeavored to live the Truth, He wrote about it through His divine gift of verse. A weaver by profession, Kabir is considered as one of the world’s greatest poets and one of the most quoted authors. Kabir’s message is universal. Perhaps that is why many still revere Kabir as a Saint, whether they are a Sikh, Hindu, Muslim or modern spiritual seekers. We would now like to invite you to be sublime in the beautiful spiritual poetry selected from “The Songs of Kabir.” “Bathe in the truth, know the true Guru, have faith in the true Name!” “The moon shines in my body, but my blind eyes cannot see it: The moon is within me, and so is the sun. The unstruck drum of Eternity is sounded within me; but my deaf ears cannot hear it. So long as man clamours for the I and the Mine, his works are as nothing: When all love of the I and the Mine is dead, then the work of the Lord is done.”

From Alice Bailey’s The Reappearance of the Christ: “The Doctrine of the Coming One,” Part 1 of 3

From Alice Bailey’s The Reappearance of the Christ: “The Doctrine of the Coming One,” Part 1 of 3

Born in 1880, Alice Bailey in her youth was a devoted Christian who later developed an extensive knowledge and practice of Theosophy. In 1919, at the age of 39, she began a spiritual journey of inner telepathic communications with the Great Ascended Master Djwal Khul, also called “The Tibetan” or “Master D.K.” Today we will read from one of Alice Bailey’s books written in cooperation with Master Djwal Khul, titled “The Reappearance of the Christ,” published in 1948. “Right down the ages, in many world cycles and in many countries (and today in all) great points of tension have occurred which have been characterized by a hopeful sense of expectancy. Someone is expected and His coming is anticipated. Always in the past, it has been the religious teachers of the period who have fostered and proclaimed this expectancy and the time has always been one of chaos and difficulty, of a climaxing point at the close of a civilization or culture and when the resources of the old religions have seemed inadequate to meet men’s difficulties or to solve their problems. The coming of the Avatar, the advent of a Coming One and, in terms of today, the reappearance of the Christ are the keynotes of the prevalent expectancy.”

Jewish Scholar Asa Keisar’s True Vegan World Revolution, Part 2 of 3

00:15:30

Jewish Scholar Asa Keisar’s True Vegan World Revolution, Part 2 of 3

Today, Mr. Asa Keisar readily elaborates on the Holy Torah’s requirement of justice for the animals. “About tza’ar ba’alei chayim (suffering of living creatures), it’s not only for the animals. First, it’s for us. Why? Because if we make suffering for the animal, when we eat, we take bad energy. And this energy makes us angry, makes us not good, not only in the spirit, but even in the body. When the Torah said, ‘Don’t steal from people,’ She doesn’t mean only for the people that you make something bad. You make something bad for you, for your soul, if you steal. All the scholars in Judaism say that there’s no difference in the tza’ar, in the suffering between the animals and human beings. Because the reason is not the intelligence, it’s common sense. And all the animals feel hot and cold, and all kinds of suffering. This is evidence. And Judaism is right 100% in the Book. You know something about kashrut (Jewish dietary laws), if you make suffering for the animals, its not kosher (permitted foods for kashrut).”

Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations: Selection from Book 4, Part 2 of 2

Founding his beliefs on the teachings of Stoicism, the Roman emperor was also diligent in finding his own way of self-improvement. This 12-volume work has been revered by many other philosophers over the centuries and is praised as a real testament to a government of duty and service. We now continue with excerpts from the personal reflective notes of Marcus Aurelius in Book 4 of “Meditations.” “What is ‘eternal’ fame? Emptiness. Then what should we work for? Only this: proper understanding; unselfish action; truthful speech. A resolve to accept whatever happens as necessary and familiar, flowing like water from that same source and spring. Everything [is] transitory – the knower and the known. Constant awareness that everything is born from change. The knowledge that there is nothing nature loves more than to alter what exists and make new things like it.”

How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (vegetarian), Part 1 of 3 (old WOW 864 865)

Born in 1861, Dr Rudolf Steiner was a great Austrian polymath, a philosopher and scientist who made influential contributions in the fields of education, science, spirituality, and medicine. Today we’ll read a passage from Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s book “The Way of Initiation,” in which he shares his deep inner realizations on how we are all capable of discovering the inner knowledge and treasures of the Spirit. “In the first place, he who strives earnestly after the higher knowledge need not be afraid of any difficulty or obstacle in his search for an Initiate who shall be able to lead him into the profounder secrets of the world. For it is a strict law with all Initiates to withhold from no man the knowledge that is due him. But there is an equally strict law which insists that no one shall receive any occult knowledge until he is worthy and well prepared.”

Selections from "Thus Spake the Holy Mother (vegetarian)," Part 2 of 2

The Holy Mother is considered an uplifter of souls who maintained communion with God at all times, even while engaging in various daily activities. To her disciples, she was a teacher who removed their doubts, a mother whose loving kindness brought comfort, and a Divine presence that assured them of spiritual liberation. We now would like to share with you the uplifting sayings of Sri Sarada Devi, through an excerpt from “Thus Spake The Holy Mother.” “Spiritual practice means to keep the mind steady at His lotus feet and to be absorbed in His thoughts. When the desire arises in the mind to know anything, then pray to Him alone in a lonely place with tears in your eyes. He will remove all dirt and sorrow from your mind and will make you understand everything. Always discriminate. Try to realize that the outside object which is attracting your mind is impermanent, and turn your attention to God. Always try to do the Lord’s work and at the same time try to practice Japa (repeating holy mantras or God’s name) and meditation.”

Buddhism’s Sacred Scripture: The Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Dharma, Chapter 4, Part 3 of 6

“Later, he spoke to his son again, saying, ‘You must keep on at this work and not leave me anymore.’ By the end of this time, the son felt that he was understood and trusted, and he could come and go at ease. At that time, the rich man fell ill and knew he would die before long. He spoke to his impoverished son, saying, ‘I now have great quantities of gold, silver, and rare treasures, you are to take complete charge of the amounts I have. This is what I have in mind, and I want you to carry out my wishes. Because from now on, you and I will not behave as two different persons.’ After some time had passed, the father perceived that his son was bit by bit, becoming more self-assured, and despised his former low opinion of himself. Realizing that his own end was approaching, he proceeded to make this announcement: ‘This is my son, who was born to me. He abandoned me and run away, and for over fifty years he wandered about suffering hardship. This is in truth my son, and I in truth, am his father. Now everything that belongs to me, all my wealth and possessions, shall belong entirely to this son of mine.’ When the impoverished son heard these words of his father, he was filled with great joy, having gained what he never had before.”

The Call of Cosmic Evolution: Excerpts from “Leaves of Morya’s Garden” by Spiritual Messengers Nicholas and Helena Roerich (vegetarians), Part 2 of 2

“I bestow My Wisdom upon you. I am not a bridge built of promises, but verily the Light that calls to you. I teach love. My disciples must realize happiness in the love of Christ. Love can create universes. Love and Wisdom are equal.” “I expound happiness. I shall designate the path for the battle against the bazaar that is the present world. People have reached a dead end, but lightning will reveal the way out, And thunder will arouse the slumberers. Mountains have crashed to earth. Lakes have been drained of their waters. Cities have been engulfed by floods. Hunger shows its face. Yet has the spirit of humanity remained unmoved. Go, teach, stretch out the hand of aid! Seek happiness and exalt the spirit. Faith in self and the search for Truth create harmony.” “By Us and by you, together, is the spiritual culture built. The Truth of the world will stand firm. The Light will penetrate the darkness—I attest. The Gates of the Spiritual World are thrown open.” “I love being your Teacher in quests of the Spirit. The other world, where My days are, must kindle joy in yours.”

How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (vegetarian), Part 2 of 3 (old WOW 864 865)

An eloquent public speaker and gifted writer, he gave over 6,000 lectures in his lifetime and gained recognition as a literary critic. His writings cover a wide range of subjects, and he published more than 25 books, including “Mysticism at the Dawn of the Modern Age,” “The Way of Initiation,” and “Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path: A Philosophy of Freedom.” “If we do not develop within ourselves this deeply-rooted feeling that there is something higher than ourselves, we shall never find enough strength to evolve to something higher. The Initiate has only acquired the power of lifting his intellect to the heights of knowledge by guiding his heart into the depths of veneration and devotion. The heights of the Spirit can only be reached by passing through the portals of humility. Man can certainly have the right to gaze upon the Reality, but he must first earn this right. You can only acquire right knowledge when you are ready to esteem it. There are laws in the spiritual life, as in the physical life.”

The Venerated Socrates was born in Athens, Greece circa 470 BC. Many people consider Him to be the father of Western philosophy. Today we’ll read an excerpt from Book Vll of “The Republic,” in which the Venerated Socrates and Glaucon converse on the subject of transitioning from darkness to an upper world of light and reason. This is Plato’s well-known allegory of the cave, describing how the philosopher is like a prisoner who, once freed, would require a new understanding of reality. “My opinion is that in the world of knowledge the idea of good appears last of all, and is seen only with an effort; and, when seen, is also inferred to be the universal author of all things beautiful and right, parent of light and of the Lord of light in this visible world, and the immediate source of reason and truth in the intellectual; and that this is the power upon which he who would act rationally either in public or private life must have his eye fixed. Moreover, I said, you must not wonder that those who attain to this beatific vision are unwilling to descend to human affairs; for their souls are ever hastening into the upper world where they desire to dwell.”
