Our Fabulous Solar System, Part 1 of 2

00:14:04

Our Fabulous Solar System, Part 1 of 2

“Did you know our great solar system was formed 4.6 billion years ago from a very large cloud of dust and gas called a nebula?” There are eight planets orbiting the Sun, including Earth. We will introduce them one by one, in the order of their distance to the Sun. Mercury. The first planet from the Sun, is also the smallest planet in the solar system. “Orbiting the Sun in just 88 days, I also have the most elliptical orbit of any planet.” “You would think I’m the hottest planet because I’m closest to the Sun, right? Not quite. Do you know who is?” “Planet Venus is my name, for being the brightest is my fame! I'm also known as the Earth's twin sis. To the Earth, as I am close, you can see me without a telescope! My orbit is most circular.” The next is Venus’s twin sister, Earth. “I am the third rock from the Sun. My atmosphere is totally suitable for life, made of mostly nitrogen and oxygen. It takes me 365 days to make it around the Sun.” Thank you, Earth, for sustaining all life here. You are indeed special. “Hey guys. I am Mars. I am considered the last of the ‘terrestrial planets,’ or those made entirely of rock. My iconic red color comes from rusty rocks and dust. I have two ice caps of frozen water. I even have seasons similar to Earth, because my axis is tilted 25 degrees. It takes me 687 Earth days to make it around the Sun. I have two small moon friends hanging around me, named Phobos and Deimos. What many of you don’t know is that a long time ago, there were humanoids living on my surface, and had developed civilizations. You would call them Martians. In fact, even today some Martians are still living underground here.” Supreme Master Ching Hai once revealed this secret in a conference in Thailand in 2009. “Long ago, Mars and Venus were once a lot like our planet – they had water, life, and people similar to us. But the inhabitants of Mars and Venus destroyed their respective planetary homes because they raised too much livestock, and the gases released triggered an irreversible greenhouse gas effect. Scientists thus called it ‘runaway global warming,’ and say this is what the future of Earth might be like. So let’s not end up like either Mars or Venus, our neighboring planets. Also, once we stop the killing, then we will generate a more loving, kind, and inviting atmosphere for other noble beings in the galaxy to perhaps join us or be in contact with us. That’s right.”

Appreciate What You Have

We are excited to have you join us today on Kids' Wonderland, a new addition to our Supreme Master Television programs this year. It's a place for kids and adults with young hearts to go on adventures, learn new things and have fun together! Now let's jump on a magic carpet and travel to India for story time. Today, we present one of those stories, called "The Monkey and the Peas." "O mighty King, the monkey just showed us what greed can bring us. Instead of appreciating what he already had, he became greedy for a little gain and ended up with nothing." Hearing the wise words of the counsellor, the king vowed to always remember the lesson from the monkey and the peas, and be grateful for everything God has given him. Do you know where oxygen comes from? We all know greenery is important, but in the past 20 years, we’ve lost lots of trees. Do you know why? There are many reasons. If we do not eat animals, we can save lots of trees! Another reason is that we have been using trees to make paper. If we reduce paper use, we can also save trees! To save paper, we can do the 3 Rs: reduce, recycle and reuse.

Ami, Child of the Stars

00:14:39

Ami, Child of the Stars

The book starts off with Peter, a young boy who meets an extraterrestrial, named Ami, on the beach after he sees a spaceship crash into the sea. Ami’s first challenge is to overcome Peter’s belief that aliens are coming to invade Earth. “Other than those already on Earth, impossible. Because crazy people destroy their own civilization before reaching the necessary scientific level to leave their own planet and invade other worlds. And you should definitely make a note of that. Real intelligence goes along with goodness, or it isn’t real intelligence.” “You love whom?” “We love it all; people, nature, animals, life, everything. Those who love can’t harm what they love.” Ami and Peter walk around the town together, while Ami explains many things about the human race, along with life on other planets. He also shares some wisdom with Peter along the way. “Life is here for us to enjoy, Peter. Try to pay attention to all that life brings you. There is magic in every moment, but we hardly notice all these simple things. Try to feel, to perceive, instead of thinking. The most profound meaning of life lies beyond thought.” When Peter checks in at home and sees his dinner, Ami tells him that he doesn’t eat meat, as it is actually eating a dead body. Peter immediately understands and decides to be vegan.

The Kind-hearted Young Spirit - Eshiana Coleman (Vegan), Part 1 of 2

The Kind-hearted Young Spirit - Eshiana Coleman (Vegan), Part 1 of 2

Today, we have the good fortune of meeting the bright young lady, Eshiana Coleman, who is a vegan, an animal activist, and holds the title of an Elite Gymnast in the United States. And on multiple occasions, she has spoken strongly on behalf of animal welfare. Do you want to know why she decided to become an animal activist? “Yes, we do.” “I’m here to wake people up because animals have a brain, they have feelings, they want to be loved and they want to play, and it’s not good for the climate or your health at all. And I want to let people know that, so that they can live a really fulfilling life.” What does Eshiana eat at school? How does she keep the vegan diet there? “So sometimes if in the morning I don’t” feel like making my lunch or my parents don’t, I will go to school and just get the salad bar options. But if I want a homemade lunch, I usually just pack a sandwich with veggies, tomatoes, and mustard, and maybe some vegan meat slices. There are a lot of vegan recipes that you find online.” As a high academic achiever in school, Eshiana has maintained an A+ grade point average throughout the school year. She is also into acrobatic gymnastics, where she spends about 15 hours each week in training with USA gymnastics.

The Kind-hearted Young Spirit - Eshiana Coleman (Vegan), Part 2 of 2

00:15:00

The Kind-hearted Young Spirit - Eshiana Coleman (Vegan), Part 2 of 2

I’m curious about how she manages all of these things, and does them so well? “So, with the vegan diet, I usually have like it planned out the day. So, I normally have a schedule that I stick to every day so that it doesn’t get overwhelming. So, with the vegan diet, your recovery time from injuries or muscle soreness takes much less time than if you’re eating animal proteins and an animal-based diet. And also a vegan diet really builds up your strength.” Since gymnastics is a very intense sport, how does Eshiana keep herself calm and focused? Dose she have a secret? “A lot of the time, I can get really overwhelmed and so meditation is a great way for me to chear my head and get into a better head space. One of my favorite things to do if a have extra time is, I love to read, write and draw.” Finally, Eshiana’s dad, Mr. Monk Coleman, would like to share with us something special that Eshiana drew when she was very young. “And I looked at it and I was blown away because she was only six or seven years old when she did this. And it was like a how you should live. It was a roadmap to how you should live, to live a happy, healthy, compassionate life. But this is it right here.”

Our Fabulous Solar System, Part 2 of 2

00:11:22

Our Fabulous Solar System, Part 2 of 2

Today, we will continue to explore our Solar System, along with the remaining planets, and Pluto. Let’s begin where we left off, Jupiter, the fifth planet from the Sun. “I am the largest planet in the Solar System. I have mystical, swirling stripes made of cold, windy clouds of water and ammonia. My atmosphere is composed of hydrogen and helium. Do you see the red spot on me? It’s actually a giant storm that has lasted for hundreds of years. I am known for having 79 moons.” “Hi, I’m Saturn, named after the Roman god of wealth and agriculture. I am the farthest planet from Earth that can be seen without a telescope. My most famous features are my ever so beautiful rings, which are made up of ice, rock, and dust, and also my biggest moon, Titan, which is larger than the planet Mercury.” “I’m famous for rotating on my side. I am 4 times bigger than Earth. This is my sign. My name is the same as the Greek god of the sky. It rains diamonds on me. Yes, I am Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun. I am an ice giant.” “Hi, everyone. I am Neptune, the densest, and most gaseous planet in the entire Solar System. It’s my greenish-blue color that inspired astronomers to give me the name of the Roman god of the sea. I have six rings and 14 moons. It takes me 165 years to complete one lap around the Sun. Fun fact! I was the first planet whose existence was predicted by mathematical calculations before being spotted with a telescope.” “Hallo, everyone. I am Pluto. Technically, I am not a planet, because I share my orbit with other icy bodies, but I am glad to be here.” “Right now, we are all very concerned about the current state of planet Earth. Because of the animal livestock industry, the environment on Earth is seriously damaged. There is a shortage of water and other natural resources.” “We hope for an urgent transition to the organic vegan way by the earthlings, which will save lives, animal and human, and conserve water.”

Gentleness is Strength

00:16:48

Gentleness is Strength

Today, I’m going to share with you a story titled “The North Wind and the sun.” “Sun, do you see that traveler wearing a cloak? I propose a contest to resolve our dispute once and for all! The first one to remove the cloak off of his back is the strongest of all!” Despite the strong force of the Wind, the man didn’t take off his cloak, but held on to it even tighter. In the end, the Sun, by offering warmth and comfort, made the man willingly and happily take off his cloak. It’s just like in our lives, sometimes we try to force things to happen and it doesn’t always end well, often distancing us from other people. On the contrary, when we show love and acceptance, people open themselves up to him. Such is the law of “love expands, fear contracts.” With the power of love and understanding, the Korean leaders eventually signed a peace treaty in April, 2018. This proves that the gentle way is actually a form of strength that can produce positive results. Since our story today involves the wind, let’s make a toy that harnesses the wind! How about a pinwheel?

Billie Eilish, Vegan Musical Prodigy

00:12:28

Billie Eilish, Vegan Musical Prodigy

“I am Billie Eilish, from Los Angeles.” Billie is a multi-talented musical genius from the United States. The 2019 Grammy awards were a revelation for Billie, as she took home 5 Grammys including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. She became the youngest artist to ever be nominated in all four main Grammy categories in the same year, and also won them all! Her Brother Finneas also won the Grammy for Producer of the Year. They both have a long list of awards for their studio album, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” including ones from the American Music Awards, MTV, GAFFA awards, and many others. At the American Music Awards, Billie wore a t-shirt that said, “No Music On A Dead Planet,” showing her support and solidarity to combat and solve the climate change crisis. Billie and her family also adopted the vegan diet! Their mother, Maggie Baird, raised both Billie and Finneas on a vegetarian diet. In 2014, the entire family became vegan, out of compassion for our animal co-inhabitants. Not only did it help their conscience, the entire family saw immediate improvements in their health. Billie frequently uses both her talent and her wide-reaching voice to support noble causes. She joined Lady Gaga to perform at the One World: Together at Home concert, which promoted social distancing, and raised US$128 million for coronavirus healthcare workers. Billie and Finneas also played a concert on Pay It Forward Live, by Verizon to raise money for Support and Feed. Support and Feed was started by their mom Maggie, in order to support vegan restaurants by buying food from vegan vendors, and donating it to those in need. We hope you have learned something about the talented young musician Billie Eilish, her passion for music, as well as her compassion for the planet.

Heal the World with Love, Part 1 of 2

Heal the World with Love, Part 1 of 2

Despite all the loss and grief inflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic, people across the world have taken actions to spread joy, strength, and healing where it is most needed. In our two-part show, we want to highlight some of the noble children and teens who have gone above and beyond for the greater good. Two boys from India, Jashith Narang and Ayush Sankaran, took advantage of the precious lockdown time by developing a Smartphone app, called “Climate catastrophe – Earth in Dearth in only seven days.” Users can calculate their carbon footprint based on their daily activities. It also has two games; one is about deforestation and the other is about renewable energy. Their app won an award in the App Inventor Hackathon 2020, held by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Stephen Wamukota, a nine-year-old boy from Kenya, independently built two simple devices from wooden window frames; these contraptions help people wash and sanitize their hands, without worrying about frequently touched surfaces, like faucet handles and soap dispensers. His invention won him the Presidential Order of Service, Uzalendo (Patriotic) Award from His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta. A 12-year-old boy from San Francisco, USA named Mizan Rupan-Tompkins invented a smart tool to help people avoid germs. He was inspired with the idea when he noticed his parents were struggling to open doors using their sleeves. He used a 3-D printer to make hook-like devices called, “Safe Touch Pro” in order to minimize interacting with high-touch-surfaces. High-touch-surfaces are objects people interact with frequently to get around, such as door handles, elevator buttons, and ATMs! A 13-year old Canadian boy named Warren Richmond made face shields for health care workers. My young friends, what’s a good deed that you plan to do? What can we do with our “Two Hands”?

The Noble Dog: Running for Love

In 2016 Mr. Dion Leonard entered a 155-mile (250-km), seven-day ultramarathon in the Gobi Desert of China. The race was grueling, so he was surprised on the second day when a small dog began running alongside him. “Throughout the 77 miles (124 km) that she ran of the race, she could have gone off at any stage, but she didn’t. I saw a lot of courage and resilience in her.” What an incredible story of love and devotion! Gobi wouldn’t give up on Dion during the race, and Dion wouldn’t give up on finding Gobi! Dogs really bring a lot of fun and love into our lives. They also teach us about unconditional love. Do you have any good ideas about what we can do to help our loving dog friends? You could try to adopt, not shop! There are many abandoned dogs in no-kill shelters, currently hoping for homes. These beautiful animals will always be grateful that you book them into your life.

Vegans Are Cool, Part 1

00:13:41

Vegans Are Cool, Part 1

Welcome to “Vegans Are Cool” where we proudly present some of our young Association members and friends from around the world. These multi-talented kids demonstrate what it means to follow a loving vegan lifestyle while pursuing their passions. A vegan lifestyle is one that doesn't involve eating and using animal products. These youth are compassionate, heroic, smart, and cool. They are role models of peace and love. First, we are traveling to meet two young vibrant vegans, Juanita and Angelina, in the beautiful city of Brisbane, Australia. ‟Hi, I'm Juanita and I'm 12 years old. I've been vegan since birth. Yes, her name is Lucky. And she's a dog. She surfs. I noticed when Lucky sleeps with me, I only have good dreams. I don't eat meat because I care for the animals, and they have feelings too.” One of Juanita's hobbies is poetry and she has written this beautiful poem about dolphins. Our next talented guest is from Hong Kong. ‟My name is Oliver. I'm 8 years old. Animals are our friends; we shouldn't hurt them. They are just different from us, like skin colors. For example, horses, they sleep while standing, they are living beings. But some of them won't grow up because people kill and eat them." Just like his mother, Oliver also enjoys practicing yoga and baking vegan cupcakes! Next up, we are meeting up with compassionate 11-year-old Seung-hyeon from Jeonju, Korea. ‟I thought it wasn't right to eat meat after watching a meat processing clip on Supreme Master TV. I don't think my friends know that a meat diet is crueler than we thought. When I eat a lunch box at school, my friends want to eat my lunch box rather than the school lunch, and they say the veggie meat is more delicious.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender

00:15:11

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Today, we are delighted to introduce to you an outstanding American TV series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s an award-winning animated children’s show which aired on the US TV channel Nickelodeon beginning in February 2005 and lasted three seasons until July 2008. Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, a writer for Forbes magazine called it one of the best shows of all time. It has been released in more than 105 countries, and translated into many languages. The setting of the story occurs in an imagined land where people are divided into four nations based on their affinity with the four natural elements: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. The central figure is a special 12-year-old boy named Aang, who is a spiritual monk and vegetarian. Born in the Air Nation and being the last survivor of his kind, Aang is the reincarnation of the “Avatar,” the only person who has the ability to control or “bend” all four elements. He is destined to restore peace and balance to the world. Accompanied by his friends and the loyal bison Appa, Aang travelled to many lands with different cultures to fulfill his destiny. Along the way, he studied with many teachers, encounters many trials and tribulations, and grows to understand what it means to be an Avatar. What makes Aang special is that he always tries to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts. Being a vegetarian, he extends love and compassion to all beings, even to the so-called enemies. That is what eventually brings peace to the world. Being an Avatar, he needed to first become master of himself, maintain peace among the four nations and serve as a mediator between the humans and spirits. Combining spiritual teachings with all the cool bending elements and martial arts, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a show you don’t want to miss!

Lesson of the Bell of Atri

00:15:21

Lesson of the Bell of Atri

Hundreds of years ago, the town of Atri was ruled by a good king. Often though, he didn’t feel at ease. ‘I want my people to live happily in peace, and anyone who is treated unfairly should get justice. What can I do?’ Looking for a solution, he ordered his minister to acquire a great bell, and hung it in tower in the middle of the town square. It’s called “The Bell of Justice.” “Whenever any one of you requires it, you can ring it and then one of our judges will hear your case, and provide justice.” Later, the people of Atri suddenly heard the bell sounding loudly. They were very surprised as it had not happened for a long time. When everyone reached the square, they were surprised to find it was an old horse that was pulling the grapevine! The horse rang “The Bell of Justice” on purpose. Look! He is extremely skinny and famished. It’s obvious that he was not well-taken care of. It is very possible that he has rung the bell to complain against his human companion. He belongs to an old knight living on the hill. The judges asked for the old knight to appear before them. Your horse has asked for justice and he shall have it. When the king heard this, he was very pleased that even animals in his kingdom received justice. The horse lived comfortably and happily thereafter.

Today, first we will introduce to you a special Plant-based chef from Hull, England, Miss Lucy Musgrave. She is only 15 years old. Her budding business, Puredelicious (puredelicious.co.uk), has recently attracted a great deal of attention. Lucy’s delicious recipes, creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit have inspired many people to be vegan. Would you like to know why Lucy wanted to be vegan? When she started cooking? “As I grew older, I became fully aware of damage being caused to our planet and animal habitats… especially in the meat and dairy industries. Because of this, and my love for animals, I decided to do something to change how I eat.” Do you want to know how she got started in her business? Because her food was so tasty, and so many of her friends wanted to learn from her, she was inspired to promote her recipes, in order to help others create their own tasty and affordable vegan food. Aside from her recipes and online ebook, she is also a guitarist, writes her own music, and performs with the “Second Level Band.” She certainly is a very creative young woman. Here we introduce some of the bright examples of our young vegan elites, who not only spread the benefits of the vegan diet, but also actively speak up for our voiceless animal friends.

Helping Others Helps Yourself

Helping Others Helps Yourself

Today, I will share with you a story called, “The Great Sacrifice”. “Once upon a time, there was a king who had a teenage daughter named Amelia. One day, the king invited an important guest to the palace for a banquet. He was a highly enlightened saint with immense power; however, when the hermit entered the palace, the princess blocked him because of his humble appearance. Looking at the princess, the hermit was deeply concerned. If she continued behaving this way, how could she be expected to lead her people with compassion? He decided to teach her a lesson before it was too late. But the hermit had a greater plan for the princess. He said to her: ‘The spell incurred by your own bad karma has been cast and nothing in this world can break it, except your own kind heart. When you turn into a tree, find ways to help others. And when you give your life to others, you will live again.’” Princess Amelia was turned into a tree because of her arrogance, and rude behavior towards the poor. She stood alone all by herself at the edge of the forest. Days and months passed, but no one came to the woods. Then one day, she finally prayed in despair. “‘Please God, help me.’ A few days later, two woodcutters arrived. Sitting under Princess Amelia, they talked to each other. ‘My son is very sick, but I can’t afford to get him treatment. What can I do?’ As they were about to leave, they suddenly heard the tree talking. ‘Hey, please don't leave. Listen to me. My wood is very valuable. If you cut me down and sell the wood, you will be able to save your son's life.’” With the money from the wood, the child’s life was saved. What happened to Princess Amelia? “Oh, I'm back at the palace, alive and well as myself. Thank God!” And by giving her life for others, she earned her own life back. What goes around comes around. How beautiful is that! Let’s all remember this lesson and try to help others whenever we can.

Saving the Ocean with Defelia the Mermaid, Part 1 of 3

00:14:42

Saving the Ocean with Defelia the Mermaid, Part 1 of 3

Welcome to our show, “Saving the Ocean with Defelia the Mermaid.” In our show today, we will tell a special story about a mermaid named Defelia, joined by her wonderful friends in the sea and on land. It all started with a single plastic bag, flying around on a windy day, by the ocean. Where does it come from and where does it end up? Let’s watch. The wind took it up over forests and rivers, and it eventually sank into the deep waters of the ocean. As it drifted downward, Timmy excitedly swam towards it and tried to eat it, but his head got stuck with-in. Just as he started to panic, his best friend, the mermaid Defelia appeared, as she always did, when her friend was in trouble. This rubbish and fishing business has gotten very serious. It is hurting so many of our animal friends every day. We need everyone here to help save our ocean life. I must do something! I am going to go to shore and try and talk to the humans. Maybe if we tell them about all the damage they’re causing, they might stop eating us and destroying our home. Jazzy and her mom walked down to the beach. Jazzy noticed a girl swimming along the shoreline. It was Defelia the Mermaid who waved at her. Wait, would you let Jazzy be a mermaid for a day and come with me with her underwater camera? Maybe you can take some photos of the mess in the ocean, and show them to other humans. I have magic shells for special occasions. All Jazzy has to do is wear it here then we are connected. She can turn into a mermaid with a tail, and can breathe under water. Defelia and Jazzy waved to mom before swimming off into the ocean. Their adventure had just begun.

Good Habits of Cleanliness

00:14:01

Good Habits of Cleanliness

That’s right, when we sneeze or cough, we should always cover our mouth, or sneeze and cough into our sleeve. This will prevent our friends from getting ill. That’s the first tip of cleanliness. You should also make it a habit of washing your hands when you enter your home to prevent spreading germs that you may have come into contact when you were outside. This will also help to protect your family and friends from getting sick. 1) Wet your hands 2) Lather with soap 3) Rub your fingers 4) Rub your knuckles 5) Scrub your fingernails 6) Lather for at least 20 secs 7) Rinse your hands 8) Dry your hands. We have to be careful of each step, so that your hands will be free from germs. But sometimes washing hands is not enough. After a day out and about, going to school, or running around, we can get really dirty and smelly! What should we do? That brings us to tip number three, which is… taking a bath or shower. The fourth thing we should do is brush our teeth in the morning, in the evening, and after each meal. Supreme Master Ching Hai has shared these useful tips on how to brush our teeth properly. “Brush carefully, or teeth will decay. Not like this. This way. And brush your tongue as well. Since we are talking about tooth-brushing, let me tell you one more secret. Don’t use too much toothpaste.” Keeping our environment clean is the next essential step. Our living spaces include our bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and our work areas. When we walk into a clean and tidy room, we feel peaceful and calm, while stepping into a messy room can make us feel agitated, right? We are affected by our environment, and our environment is a reflection of us. Supreme Master Ching Hai explains more. “My work, you see how I take care of the environment. That gives you the idea, okay? That's how you learn to live your life, the way you want. But it's just an example of beauty and cleanliness. Because that represents Godliness within you. That represents Heaven.” Lastly, when there are too many unhealthy viruses, like COVID-19, flying around, we have to do something extraordinary to stop it from spreading, by wearing masks when going outside. Remember friends, the six good habits of cleanliness, 1) cover ourselves when sneezing or coughing, 2) wash our hands with soap, 3) take frequent baths or showers, 4) brush our teeth, 5) keep our environment clean, and 6) wear a mask when necessary. Let’s keep ourselves and our living spaces clean and beautiful. If everyone will do it, we might just turn the whole world into a clean and beautiful place!

Ameliarose - A Vegan Music Star, Part 1 of 2

Today we are meeting Ameliarose, an incredibly talented singer/songwriter who is finding success in the music world, through her soaring voice and beautiful songs. Ameliarose made it to the Top 68 of American Idol’s Hollywood Week of 2019, which is a tremendous accomplishment, especially for someone who was only 16 years old at the time! “Well, the first song I ever wrote Was called ‘Save the Orangutans'. But it was about like saving the environment. And I think that my mom was the one who kind of was like, urging me to kind of be more in the community, in the vegan community. Once I got older, once I was vegan and stuff like that.” Ameliarose, as a vegan, how are you able to use your musical talents to support the vegan movement? “I love performing, for like vegan events and stuff like that. So I’ve played ‘Hudson Valley VegFest,' ‘Kingston Animalia,’ the ‘Can I Live’ festival and I think a couple of others. But I would love to get more active in the vegan music community.” “I just did a project with a friend of mine, about trying to incorporate meatless Mondays at my school. People seem very open to the idea.” We hope you are inspired by Ameliarose’s passion for music, and her efforts to promote the compassionate vegan diet.

The Lorax - The Environment Protector

The Lorax - The Environment Protector

“The Lorax” was written by one of the most well-known American children’s book authors. Since its publication in 1971, “The Lorax” has been named as one of “Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children” and one of the “Top 100 Picture Books” by the School Library Journal. In “The Lorax,” that dull and filthy area used to be a beautiful place, filled with fresh air, green grasses, and lots of colorful Truffula Trees. Many animals used to play happily in this earthly paradise. But everything changed after the arrival of one person, Once-ler. With an axe, one swing was all it took for the tree to fall down. On the freshly cut-stump, a man came out. Once-ler couldn’t wait to use the soft tuft, and knitted a Thneed, while talking to this strange man. The Thneeds became more and more popular, and more people came to buy it. Even railroads were built. Tree after tree, Once-ler’s business grew bigger and bigger. The Lorax kept asking Once-ler to stop chopping down trees. “I am going to continue to speak for the trees.” Sadly, Once-ler wouldn’t listen to him. Eventually, there were no more trees left. Along with them, gone were the clean air, fresh water, fruits and plants, and the animals who lived on them. At the end of the story, the Lorax departed the dark and lifeless place in despair; however, he left something behind, a pile of rocks placed to spell out the word “UNLESS,” which puzzled Once-ler for a long time. But he figured it out one day after talking to a boy. “Because UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Once-ler threw a seed at the boy and told him to plant the last Truffula seed. Every one of us can be like that boy, to start caring about the environment, to start growing things, and to be a protector of nature. We can stop eating meat, so that trees wouldn’t need to be cut down for raising animals; we can use recycled paper for crafts, we can use a cloth towel instead of paper towels, so that less trees will be cut down to make them. There are many ways to save, recycle and reuse natural resources. Many children around the world have been taking actions to plant trees and protect the environment. You are welcome to join too!
