Assimilating the Yoga Spirit into Daily Life, Part 2 of 2

Assimilating the Yoga Spirit into Daily Life, Part 2 of 2

Yoga is not simply a workout; it’s also a form of spiritual cultivation to achieve a balanced life and liberation. Yoga practice involves both active qualities, such as the various postures performed, as well as static like meditation. All of the practice elements require relaxation and concentration to obtain the best results. How does Meggie quickly tune into the desired state? “When I do yoga practice by myself, I will pray first. I usually pray that today I will be able to bring the flow of God to the students through this exercise; and allow the students to benefit, whether it’s physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual. They can give feedback and contribute positive energy to the universe.” For those who have a desk job, movement during the workday is likely minimal. Meggie has some asanas that can be done in one’s chair for better health. As we’ve just seen, yoga can be done practically anywhere. Here are some postures we can do in the comfort of our home.

Taiwan Adventist Hospital – A Vegetarian Hospital with a Caring Mission, Part 2 of 3

Taiwan Adventist Hospital – A Vegetarian Hospital with a Caring Mission, Part 2 of 3

In today’s show, we are honored to hear from Dr. Hsieh Chia-Ming, a breast cancer surgeon, Taiwan Adventist Hospital’s Cancer Care Committee’s chief executive officer, and the former director of the hospital’s breast surgery department. He will share with us his perspectives on the relationship between a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and breast cancer prevention as well as about his hospital’s compassionate care for breast cancer patients. Breast cancer is a condition where a malignant tumor has developed from cells in the breast. “Breast cancer occurs most generally around the age of 40 to 69 or 70. It is lucky if the disease is diagnosed and treated in the early stages so that she still could keep her roles in the family and workplace. It is not only helpful to her health, but also mental sustenance for her. So, it is necessary to have regular check-ups. The most important point is to never let the disease happen in the first place. Therefore, a proper diet, a vegetable and fruit-based diet, and regular exercise, may be the most fundamental and better way to prevent diseases.” Dr. Hsieh discussed with us the research findings of Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Scientists concluded that women who consume high amounts of fruits and vegetables each day have a lesser chance of having breast cancer. “It was led by America’s Harvard University. Thirty years ago, they began tracing the relationship between the breast cancer risk and intake of vegetables and fruits – that is, if your intake of vegetables and fruits is high, then your breast cancer risk will be lower. In fact, according to our long-term follow-up tracing, it is really beneficial to have a correct diet and proper exercise. These can activate the immune cells in our body to fight the cancer cells. They can suppress the cancer.” We appreciate Dr. Hsieh Chia-Ming's sharing of his medical expertise about breast cancer and how his hospital is supporting those with the condition.

Dr. Stephen Gorad (Vegan) on Quinoa - Supergrain of the Future, Part 3 of 3

This supergrain has many different colors and other distinguishing features. Dr. Gorad explains more. “There’s red, white, and black. There are actually several thousand different quinoas. So that’s something that concerns me, because when I started with quinoa, one of the things I talked about was the diversity of genetic material in quinoa.” As our world transitions to plant-based eating, those engaged in animal livestock raising will also change to compassionate livelihoods. “The spiritual meaning of respecting animals’ lives is one thing. The other thing is the kind of ecological disaster that raising animals is causing on the planet. Someone calculated the amount of energy it takes to produce a unit of protein. So the ratio for meat is 50 to one. For fish, it’s 10 to one. Chicken is four to one. Soy is two to one. You only need two units of energy to produce a unit of protein. Quinoa. Less than one and a half to one.(Wow.) It’s the most efficient plant for producing protein. Maybe it’s not so important now, but it’s going to be important in the future.”

Dr. William Grant on Bolstering Health Through Sunlight and Vitamin D, Part 3 of 3

In this concluding episode, Dr. Grant covers how elevating our vitamin D intake can improve our wellness in several areas and other advantages of sunbathing. Dr. Grant has shared that vitamin D can help prevent respiratory infections by improving immunity. “More recently, a meta-analysis of acute respiratory infections found that if you had your vitamin D level above about 10 nanograms per milliliter or 25 nanomoles per milliliter, you had a greatly reduced risk of developing acute respiratory infections.” Tooth decay is the most common form of oral disease, affecting more than 70% of children globally. Though not well-publicized, vitamin D can play a role in improving oral health. “One of the very first clinical trials on the benefits of vitamin D was reported in 1928. May Mellanby reported that. And what she found is, yes, that boys who had taken the vitamin D developed fewer dental caries than boys who didn’t.” “Sunlight exposure has many health benefits. Vitamin D is one of the more important ones. So going outdoors helps reduce the chance of developing depression.”

Acupuncturist Lisa K.Y. Wong (vegan): The Magic of Auricular Medicine, Part 3 of 3

Acupuncturist Lisa K.Y. Wong (vegan): The Magic of Auricular Medicine, Part 3 of 3

"It is a complete, comprehensive medical modality, where we use the ear to do diagnosis and treatment of all the conditions in the body, up to 200 diseases, and 500 symptoms.” All these different expressions in our ear, whether it's discoloration, flakiness of skin, the blood vessel protruding, and pain or different degrees of pain, all these are different ways the ear, our inner healer, or inner doctor, wants to tell us about what's going on. And the location of these symptoms will tell us where the problem is.” According to Ms. Wong, there are different “control panels" within us, including the ears, eyes, hands, and feet. She developed the Healing by Design Self-Care Method to show people how they can easily cure various illnesses, pains and discomforts. “I want to first help them recognize that these parts of their body have these special abilities to let them check what's going on in their body ahead of time before they are experiencing discomfort or pain, or any health challenges. Because it's so simple, I want to teach kids early in their lives. My dream is that all the children will grow up learning this as a life skill that their parents would teach them, just as common as brushing their teeth every day." "My new definition of what optimum health is, is when not only the ear, but in all your control panels in your body, you cannot find any pain. And that is the best measurement that someone is in optimum health. I believe that your inner healer has an expectation of you, based on your genes, your own lifestyle, your habits, your diet, everything combined makes what optimum health is for you. So, it is definitely a new concept." Ms. Wong has been a vegetarian for more than 25 years and vegan for the past eight years. “Through our non-profit, I teach people about the importance of the vegan diet. If they want to reach optimum health, this is a necessary, a central part and that is definitely, absolutely necessary.”

Fasting Ourselves Out of the Pleasure Trap: Dr. Alan Goldhamer (vegan), Part 2 of 3

Fasting Ourselves Out of the Pleasure Trap: Dr. Alan Goldhamer (vegan), Part 2 of 3

“And so what we advocate is people eat a health-promoting whole plant food SOS-free diet. SOS is, of course, is the international symbol of danger, but it also stands for the chemicals added to food, including salt, oil, and sugar, that fool the satiety mechanisms of the brain and create what we call ‘the pleasure trap.’” Today, Dr. Goldhamer delves into the details of water fasting and how it can be a mode to restore health. "A big part of our energy and function is involved in digestion. Digestion is a really energy-consuming, intense process and that may be one of the benefits of fasting is that you don't have to put a lot of energy into all of those processes, you're living on reserves that are burned very efficiently, and it may be that the body's ‘energy’ so to speak, can be diverted into healing rather than carrying on functions of digestion and assimilation, and elimination. ” “You start with the feeding that's done before fasting. One of the things that we encourage patients to do is to adopt a whole plant food diet, but even more than that, the few days before fasting, if they limit their diet to fruit, salads, and steamed and starchy vegetables, that actually seems to be the best preparation for undergoing fasting, particularly eliminating a lot of the drugs like caffeine and other things that have such uncomfortable withdrawal reactions.” “One of the mistakes that people make is they try to maintain higher activity levels when they're fasting because they think that that's going to facilitate more weight loss, but what it actually does is it facilitates more protein breakdown. So by resting, you can increase the likelihood that most of the fuel that you are burning is going to be fat rather than protein.” “What I can tell you is that in fasting, and also in modified fasting, or fasting mimicking programs, one of the changes that happens is the satiety hormones tend to increase and so it makes it more possible to rebalance people's hormonal issues. And therefore, after fasting, they find they can reach satiety with a whole plant food diet more readily than they had when they were on a conventional program with a lot of refined carbohydrates.”

What You Eat Matters: Dr. Caroline Trapp (vegan) on Diabetes, Diabetes, Part 2 of 2

Some are under the impression that once a person has acquired diabetes, he or she will need to take medication, or live with the condition, for the rest of their life. Dr. Trapp sheds light on this common misunderstanding. “Well, I no longer think that that’s true because I’ve seen people who just by making this significant diet change, have gotten healthier, and who don’t need medication, and who able to turn this disease around. In terms of diet, these are some of the reasons that I hear people or doctors say that their patients can’t do a plant-based diet. So, one is concerns about a lack of protein. No, it doesn’t happen. Another concern is that it’s too hard for most people. It’s doable. And I applaud all of you. We not only want to use less medication, but we want to use more plants. Exercise is really important, but, by itself, it often isn’t enough. Getting enough sleep is also really important. And of course, if you smoke cigarettes, that is the number one recommendation. Quitting smoking will go a long way to protecting the blood vessels that are at risk of damage from diabetes.”

Healing through Playing with Art: Art Therapist Joan Stanford (vegan), Part 2 of 3

Today, we will continue to introduce her (Joan) publication and explore other beneficial aspects of art therapy. “The book came out of wanting to let other busy people know that this is something they could do and add to any spiritual practice they have or anything really. So it’s letting people re-own that they have this creative spirit and re-own that child that desperately wants to play and enjoy life, rather than kind of see it as a drudgery.” “Because it opened up such a world for me and changed my attitude towards my own life, I wanted to invite other people, other busy people that would never consider playing with art materials, playing period, really. So that’s why I came up with the idea of offering playshops. I want to keep it light, but it’s always therapeutic when you do something and have fun.” “Imagery is evocative. So, if you ask someone to do something with imagery, it’s pulling from that inner self and to me that’s how it connects to being more aware of your own projections, prejudices, and misconceptions. It clarifies how you see the world. You get more in touch with it. Everybody that has any kind of sense of spirituality, you understand the mind, body and all of that, but it really makes it real; it really makes it real.”

Proper Emotion Management Makes Us Healthier

Proper Emotion Management Makes Us Healthier

Emotions not only influence our quality of life but also affect our physical and mental health. Positive feelings like happiness and satisfaction can stimulate our creativity, and enhance our empathy, thus encouraging us to assist others. When encountering setbacks or pressure, we may have negative feelings, such as anxiety and frustration, which impact our bodies, by causing our blood pressure to rise as well as heartburn and other ailments to be experienced. The emergence of negative feelings can mean that some of our needs or sentiments are ignored. Expressing our repressed feelings allows us a chance to reflect on ourselves and remind us to examine things with a more positive attitude. We can seek support and advice to dissolve the dissatisfactions in our hearts. If we are feeling down, we can think of things that make us happy, the people that we’d like to thank, or do something we like, such as listening to music, exercising, meditating, or practicing yoga. Even just breathing a few times deeply can make us feel relaxed and pacified emotionally. “Don’t stop your anger or hurtful feeling. Just go through it and quickly, with no resentment and heal it after. Anger, hurt, pain is the natural feeling of physical elements. It’s just you don’t know how to handle anger, that is the problem. Okay? If somebody hurts you, of course you feel hurt. You are not a wooden table. And when people provoke you unreasonably, or you think that they provoke you, you are bound to be angry, and that is all right. But we must understand, the nature of anger is not very constructive most of the time. So if we have to be angry, get it over with. Don’t try to suppress too much your anger. You’ll be sick. You’ll be crazy. It’s a natural feeling. Don’t carry it too long; you’ll drown yourself in anger. It’s no good for yourself and for the party involved. Get angry, talk. You don’t have to be sarcastic or hurtful when you talk. Just air your view and tell them that they made you angry because, because, because... And you wish that in the future it doesn’t happen again because you are not... going to tolerate it again. Air your view, finish, and love each other again. That’s what I think. But we just know, the anger, the quality and the real face of anger, and we’re in control of it, and don’t let the anger be our master. Anger suppressed can make you ill physically. So don’t hurt yourself more by swallowing the poisonous anger within you. Spit it out in a proper way.”

Mind-Body-Chi – Dr. Wen B-Chen’s Marvelous Relaxation Exercises, Part 1 of 5 (Hsin-Chu, Formosa)

Chi gong is an ancient Chinese exercise that people practice to cultivate the chi – the vital life-force all around and within us. It utilizes meditation, controlled breathing, guided visualization and movements to stimulate the flow of chi throughout the body, thus assisting one in self-healing and preventing illnesses. Tai chi, a popular form of chi gong exercise, is now regarded as a health-promoting activity worldwide. This five-part series features our interview with Dr. Wen B-Chen, the creator of the marvelous Mind-Body-Chi (MBC) relaxation exercise program that incorporates the essence of chi gong, tai chi, yoga and meditation. He will present a unique interpretation of MBC’s various health benefits from a Western medical perspective and give demonstrations of the MBC exercises. Dr. Wen is a former radiation oncologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, USA. He was also the radiation oncology medical director at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida, USA. “For people at the age of 30 to 55, that’s my target. Some of them really don’t have time to do exercise to maintain their health. I put together these movements and breathing to help those people. As long as they carve out a certain portion of time for themselves during the day, then their health gets maintained.” “MBC stands for Mind, Body, Chi, and Chi is c-h-i. In our (Chinese) culture, chi represents air, or spirit, or breath, or vitalities. We were taught in our culture that chi exists everywhere, in the universe and in our bodies. Inside the body, chi is supposed to follow the blood, or even go with the blood and nurture our internal organs and extremities, joints, and muscles.” To cater to senior citizens, Dr. Wen has recently expanded the MBC program from the original 6 exercises to 10, with the sequence rearranged. In our series, we’ll cover all 10 exercises. Let’s now see Dr. Wen's demonstration of exercise #1 and #2 of the MBC program.

The Benefits of Horticultural Therapy

Today’s program examines how horticultural therapy can better physical and mental health. Over time, the healing potential of gardening, or even spending time in gardens, has gained greater recognition in the healthcare field, and these activities have become an accepted method of healing. Tony Wright, a retiree from Georgia, USA, was suffering from severe depression and alcoholism and found relief when his horticultural therapist asked him to work in a greenhouse for three months doing activities such as re-potting plants and arranging flowers. As this therapy has become an accepted treatment modality for those of all ages and various conditions globally, it is now practiced in a wide variety of settings. This form of therapy has a broad spectrum of uses in bettering our well-being and touches many facets of life. Overall, cultivating plants can make one more energetic and relaxed, as well as have better sleep quality.

Taiwan Adventist Hospital – A Vegetarian Hospital with a Caring Mission, Part 3 of 3

Today, we introduce TAH’s healthy lifestyle project called NEWSTART. This wellness initiative was created by the Weimar Institute in California, USA, an entity that was also founded by Adventists. NEWSTART is an acronym for Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest, and Trust (in Divine Power). To correspond with the hospital’s mission to maintain public health, TAH established the Sanyu Health Education Center as a NEWSTART program site, with the Weimar Institute’s support and guidance. The Sanyu Health Education Center, located in Nantou, Taiwan (Formosa), was founded to improve the public’s well-being by teaching disease prevention strategies and providing services related to physical and mental wellness promotion. We were honored to interview Dr. James Wu, the center’s chief executive officer who kindly shared his insights on how NEWSTART keeps program participants healthy and enhances lives. As a vegan, he advocates a diet of “4 Noes and 1 High,” with meals served at the Sanyu Health Education Center following these guidelines. Dr. Wu explains. “‘Four Noes and One High.’ This means no refined oil, no refined sugar, no eggs, and no milk, and a diet high in fiber. That means a vegan diet. Veganism was mentioned in the [Holy] Bible, in the Book of Genesis, which was written several thousand years ago. Records from 4,000 years ago say that we humans were herbivores originally. The evidence is in our dental structure, the wavy lining and length of our intestines, and the folds of our large intestine. Humans have a biological structure that is suitable for the vegan diet. Cows, sheep, horses, camels, and elephants are all vegetarians. They are physically strong and live very long lives. Their body structure is that of vegetarians. We humans, by nature, are vegetarians. In the [Holy] Bible, Genesis, Chapter 1, it is said that all fruits, vegetables, and plants are food for us. So, recently the plant-based diet has become a trend.” Our health is reflective of our daily lifestyle. An inappropriate diet and undesirable habits are the main causes of many chronic illnesses. The NEWSTART program provides a solution by helping nurture practices that are beneficial to one’s health, including mental wellness. A result of NEWSTART’s focus is an overall reduced need for medical treatment by people completing the program, thus lowering their healthcare costs. We are very grateful to Dr. Wu for sharing his knowledge and providing us with a useful background on the NEWSTART program. Let’s all make a new start, embracing the wholesome plant-based lifestyle, which brings peace and wellness to all beings.

John Jezewski (vegan): Wellness Is in Our Hands, Part 1 of 2

Today, it is our privilege to feature excerpts from our interview with John Jezewski. He has been a registered homeopath and Living Nutrition Practitioner for almost 30 years and treated hundreds of people. This gentleman from the UK is a specialist in living nutrition, alkaline health, chronic disease, weight loss, longevity, and mental and emotional health. Additionally, he is an inspiring health coach and the founder and principal of the College of Living Nutrition that offers accredited nutrition courses in London and Birmingham for those interested in training to become a professional nutrition therapist. Mr. Jezewski is a proponent of the alkaline vegan diet. This lifestyle features a high intake of fruits, vegetables, and other healthy plant foods while restricting processed junk foods. Advocates of this way of eating say this particular diet helps maintain wellness and repels serious diseases. Our blood tends typically to be on the slightly alkaline side with a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. Therefore, by choosing more alkaline foods, it means that you may be able to “alkalize” your body to achieve or maintain the ideal pH level. “So there is a big problem. Big, big problem with people becoming too acidic, and then they resort to taking antacids. But again, you need to get to the root cause. And the root cause is eating too much food, too many drinks that are acidic. If you’re drinking cola, you’re drinking coffee, you’re drinking tea, you’re eating chips - deep-fried chips, all of this is adding to the acidity problem. And it’s a big problem. So you need to eat alkaline food, which is vegan, and alkaline - not acidic.”

Aerobic Dance – A Fun Way to Get in Shape, Part 2 of 2

In this episode, we’ll talk about selecting appropriate workout gear and dance music as well as give some tips to help with forming an exercise habit. For aerobic dance,it's best to wear material that is stretchy, breathable, and moisture-wicking, such as lycra or spandex, or wear loose-fitting sweatpants and a t-shirt. Since aerobic dancing involves plenty of footwork such as twisting, sliding, jumping, and leaping for extended periods, wearing proper dance shoes is crucial. Combining aerobic dance workouts with a healthy vegan diet will further improve your fitness. A plant-based diet is usually high in carbohydrates, which is the major energy source for aerobic exercises. Music is an integral part of aerobic dancing, and for those exercising at home, choosing tracks based on enjoyment and rhythm help you build momentum to keep you going. Aerobic dancing is a great exercise that everyone can benefit from and enjoy.

He was so impressed with this crop that the felt a calling to make quinoa a food that can be enjoyed by people everywhere and has spent over four decades on this mission. “Because as the climate changes, agricultural practices are going to change also. And quinoa has several advantages. Quinoa is drought-resistant. It’s frost-resistant, and it’s salt-tolerant. I think quinoa is a miracle. It’s a miracle food in that it’s the mother grain.” Quinoa is called a superfood for its many beneficial nutritional properties. This supergrain is high in iron, an essential mineral that makes up hemoglobin that is found in oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Quinoa is also rich in riboflavin or vitamin B2 that aids with metabolism in brain and muscle cells. “You put quinoa in a glass of water. Four hours and it starts growing. So it’s like the quinoa grain is bursting with energy to grow. That’s the energy that we’re taking into our bodies when we’re eating quinoa.”

In recent years, the scientific community has been actively exploring the mind-body connection. In its simplest terms, this means that our thoughts and emotions can affect our health. A study published in the “American Journal of Cardiology” found that forgiveness protects heart health, while negative emotions have a toxic effect on the heart. Healing through Playing with Art: Art Therapist Joan Stanford (vegan), Part 1 of 3

According to the British Association of Art Therapists, art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Art is not used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues, which may be confusing and distressing. We are honored to feature and interview with Joan Stanford, a vegan board-certified art therapist, who will graciously introduce us to the practical uses and positive effects of art therapy. “The directive that I was taught in my training was to hold it in your hands as though it was your heart or you. Something, so you’re very gentle with it. Like you spent five minutes just holding clay in your hands and manipulating it in some fashion. How did that make you feel? And often, people cry because it’s a tactile medium, so it’s a very early stage in our development, pre-verbal and all of that, and it just opens up things.” “A dramatic example I remember was with a young boy that had night terrors. He had a really horrific thing happen in his life. And I asked him to, on this piece of paper, put something symbolic of the fear, so he put… and then I said, ‘Well, now fold that up, hide it.’ So, he folded it up… but over the next few weeks, he stopped having the night terrors.”

Today, Joan will continue to elaborate on how this treatment modality assists individuals to achieve better lives and how creativity is associated with our physical wellness. “Whenever people talk about wellness, they talk about diet, nutrition, exercise, meditation, and relaxation, but very rarely do they talk about creativity as being an essential pillar and I think it really is because when we tap into our creativity, it's so enlivening enlightening; it’s energizing.” The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Joan teaches a class called “Artful Nutrition” and explains how the creative process she teaches in this course can help remove negative thoughts. “My part in that is to get to the underlying saboteur that tends to get in the way of your good intentions. So I've usually had them make some representation of that voice inside them that says, ‘Oh, you'll never do it, or you're not worthy of being healthy, or you're too this, or you're too that,’ that very nasty, nagging voice that stops our good intentions. Again, it's a very emotional process for a lot of people because it's a message they heard from someone else usually that they're not good enough or whatever and I'll have them make some representation of that voice or that critic, that I call the inner saboteur, because to me it's the underminer and it stops you from doing what you say you want to do.” In terms of nourishment, a vegan diet is recommended by doctors and been proven in numerous scientific studies to be the most healthy and energizing lifestyle choice. By not consuming animals, our mental wellness is also uplifted as our conscience is clear. Joan and her husband Jeff are both vegan, and she now shares with us why they chose plant-based eating as well as how it benefits them. “We did a lot of radio interviews, and we both said it was like we essentially see it as eliminating a huge conflict. And I think whenever you can eliminate conflict in yourself, inner conflict, two voices, you're more at peace and when you're more at peace, you're healthier, and you're happier.”
