Born to famers, After completing her university studies , Wangari returned home. But the homeland that she once knew as a child was gone. Large swathes of forested land had been cleared to make way for an economic system that promoted commercial farming. “the tea plantations have kept everyone poor, and the economic system doesn’t allow people to appreciate the beauty of where they live.”To address these issues, she established the Green Belt Movement. Professor Maathai also brought about food security. What she was saying through her work and in her life was that the two, poverty and environmental sustainability.
