“(Master, when should I give up doing something or keeping a relationship? When will I know that I should persist to achieve good results and to make myself happy? Thank You!) Whatever we do, we do until we are satisfied, but persistence does not guarantee success. If we persist in doing something with our best, but still can’t make it, we should know that it is God’s will, and don’t force it any more. Whatever we do, just try our best. Then, if it works well, OK, that is God’s will; if it fails, it means God doesn’t want us to do it, and we can let it go with ease.”
“(Greetings, dear Master. I have the following problems, please help me. First, I find it very hard to deal with my work and to deal with interpersonal relationships.) Why? Do you have problems with interpersonal relationships? Everyone is different; let it be if you have no affinity. Most people are unable to communicate with each other. Neither of you are at fault; you just don’t have affinity. Find people who have affinity with you and stick to them. Forget those without affinity, and look for others. If that is a boyfriend, say good-bye to him. Really, it is very hard to find a friend who is a confidant, very hard to find someone who knows us very well. That is why this world is full of sufferings. If we can always find someone that we like, it would be wonderful. I have been enduring a lot in these 15 years. Otherwise, nothing can be done. No one is perfect, so we just need to get over. Talk to them a little bit and forget it. Start all over again.”
“(He also asked whether such questions belonging to intellectual pursuits are ultimately helpful for spiritual practice on experiencing enlightenment.) Are they helpful? (No.) No, they said no use. You should listen to your comrades. They are saints. When they say no use, it is no use. It is better to understand ourselves. You could become a Sixth Patriarch. Why bother to read his writings? Your mind is too full. Clear it. Clear it and you will have better experiences. Do you have any experiences? (Yes, but not much.) Not much, no wonder. (He is too knowledgeable.) You study too much. It is not good for us to study too much. We will be encompassed and stuck, unlike a child who is innocent. Look at our children. They all have good experiences during initiation, much better than the grown-ups. Not one child failed to have experiences, because they are absolutely innocent. They have not yet studied about the Sixth or Fifth Patriarchs.”
