Modern Values of Judaism – Conversation with Councillor Rabbi Alan Plancey

Judaism is one of the oldest religions and still preserves some of the values and moral practices of the ancient ancestors. The devoted Jewish people not only strive to abide carefully by the Divine Laws, but also selflessly serve their family and community, loving both God and their neighbors. Today we are honored to interview Councillor Rabbi Alan Plancey, an Emeritus Rabbi of the Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue who holds a seat on Hertfordshire County Council in the United Kingdom. He will share with us some of the core values of Judaism.

Der Sonnengesang, Der erste Brief an die Gläubigen, Das Testament und weitere göttlich inspirierte Schriften des Heiligen Franziskus von Assisi,Teil 1 von 2

One of the most venerated religious figures in history, Saint Francis of Assisi, was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon and preacher, founder of the Franciscan Order. “I advise, warn and exhort my brothers in the Lord Jesus Christ, that, when they go into the world, they shall not quarrel, nor contend with words, nor judge others. But they shall be gentle, peaceable and modest, merciful and humble, honestly speaking with all, as is becoming.” For the Lord saith: “Love you enemies, and pray for those that persecute you and speak evil against you; Blessed are they that suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake.”

Die inneren Lehren von Chuang Tzu: Kapitel 4, Über die menschliche Welt, Teil 1 von 2

Chuang Tzu’s teachings were true to wu-wei, the Taoist doctrine, which means to refrain from action contrary to Nature. He espoused a way of life which is simple and natural, yet fulfilling. Some teachings from the book Chuang Tzu are introduced. Before the ideals of society took over, an achieved person worked first on getting all the parts within himself attuned before trying to attune all the parts in others. Virtue is wasted on trying to become famous, and knowledge is expressed in disputes. One who tries to become famous steps on others, and one who wants to show off their knowledge uses it as a weapon in debates. Both of them are terrible methods.

Der sechsfache Pfad der Vollkommenheit, Fragen und Antworten, Teil 4 von 4, 1. März 1991

Question: I would like to ask Master. The Lord said that we must believe in Him in order to be saved. If we believe in other religions, even though we do good deeds, we still won’t be saved. Is it correct? Master: Yes, it is correct. When a Savior comes to this world, if we believe in Hirm, then all the virtues and merits are included in that faith. It’s said that “Faith is the mother of all merits.” But we have to believe in a living Christ, or the living Buddha or the living Master, who are still in the world. This is what it means.

Aus der Heiligen Schrift: Das Buch der Sprichwörter - Auszüge aus Sprüche 20-24, Teil 1 von 2

Jesus taught God’s love and forgiveness to all people with open hearts. Now, for a wider and wiser comprehension of these proverbs, let us surrender our hearts and minds in a peaceful, perceptive state. Proverbs 20:Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.A king's wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion; those who anger him forfeits their lives. It is to one's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. Sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time they look but finds nothing.

Socrates on Friendship, Part 2 of 2

Socrates believed that an individual’s main purpose on Earth is to discover the Truth. He stated that most people focus their lives around their families, career, and social responsibilities, when, in fact, they should be concerned about the welfare of their souls. With compassion for all lives, Socrates followed and promoted a vegetarian, meaning animal free diet.

Der sechsfache Pfad der Vollkommenheit, Teil 2 von 4, 1. März 1991

In the Bible it states, “Seek you first the Kingdom of God and all other things shall be added unto you.” You must find the Kingdom of God inside, first, and then all the virtues, and other things will be added. Finding the Kingdom of God means finding our Nirvana, our own Buddha nature. “ Turn your hearing inward to listen to your inherent nature.” Reflecting upon ourselves to understand who we really are. We don’t listen with the ears. Actually, we should say that we observe our self nature, we realize our true nature. This is more correct. Because inside there are also sounds, music, inner melody. So we think we hear it, we say we hear it.

Auszüge aus der Heiligen Schrift des Theravada-Buddhismus: Suttas des Digha Nikaya, Kapitel 6 - An Mahāli (Das Ziel der Brüder), Teil 1 von 2

They are real, those Heavenly Sounds, pleasant, fitted to satisfy one’s desires, exciting longing in one’s heart, which he could not hear. They are not things of nought. But what then is the proximate and what the ultimate cause, why he could not hear them? Because of the nature of his self-concentration [Samādhi], since he has practiced one-side concentration, with the one object only in view, he only sees the sights. Is it for the sake of attaining to the practice of such self-concentration that the brethren lead the religious life under the Blessed One? But is there a path, is there a method, for the realization of these conditions?

Die erleuchtenden Philosophien von Sri Aurobindo über die Evolution der Menschen, Teil 2 von 2

God and Man, World and Beyond-world become one when they know each other. For what do we mean by Man? An uncreated and indestructible soul that has housed itself in a mind and body made of its own elements. Let all thyself be bliss. Let all thyself be the divine. Let all thyself be Krishna. What I cannot do now is the sign of what I shall do hereafter. The sense of impossibility is the beginning of all possibilities. If thou wouldst have humanity advance, buffet all preconceived ideas. Be conscious first of thyself within, then think and act. What is there new that we have yet to accomplish? Love , knowledge, Bliss, Power, Life, Unity. The meeting of man and God must always mean a penetration and entry of the divine into the human and a self-innergence of man in the divinity.

From the Sacred Taoist Texts Tao Te Ching : Chapters 59-70

Lao Tzu’s teaching focuses on the Tao, or the amorphous, ever-flowing and ever-circulating power that gave birth to the universe. Tao resides in the bodies of all beings. Taoism is one of the three most influential spiritual and cultural traditions in China. Lao Tzu’s book Tao Te Ching has become a classic in the development of both philosophy and scholarship. Today we present the sage teachings of Lao Tzu through an excerpt from the Tao Te Ching, Chapters 59-70.

Auszüge aus „Der Weg zu Gott” von Mahatma Gandhi, Teil 2 von 2

It’s the duty of every human being to look carefully within and see himself as he is and spare no pains to improve himself in body, mind and soul. He is ever prey to temptations. He has to prove his manliness by resisting and fighting temptations. It's Man’s duty to develop all his Godward faculties to perfection and to suppress completely those of contrary tendencies. The goal ever recedes from us. The greater the progress the greater the recognition of our unworthiness. Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory.

Auszüge aus dem Heiligen Koran: Kapitel 12 Yusuf (Joseph), Teil 1 von 2

The gentle Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him was a beloved teacher who led by His own shining example. His noble teachings live on in the hearts of people today, inspiring them to a peaceful path to find their Most High. The story of Joseph in the Holy Qur’an, a continuous narrative, is considered one of the most beautifully written suras. There are fewer than one hundred verses but they encompass many years and present an amazing variety of sciences and characters in a tightly-knit plot, and offer a dramatic illustration of some of the fundamental themes of the Holy Qur’an.

Aus der Heiligen Schrift des Hinduismus: Bhagavad-gītā wie sie ist, Kapitel 3 & 4, gelesen von dem Dozenten Zorig, Teil 1 von 2

Hinduism is believed to be one of the oldest living religions on Earth, with origins tracing back to the ancient Vedic civilization in India. Hinduism is a vastly diverse and colorful religion. Hindus believe in reincarnation, the law of cause and effect (karma), a single Divine Being with multiple manifestations, and the desire of all beings for liberation from the cycle of birth and death. One of the most cherished values of Hinduism is “ahimsa,” or non-violence. In Hinduism, religious belief and the practices of everyday life are inseparable. An example of this is how ahimsa is honored through a plant-based diet, which shows compassion to all beings.

Aus der Heiligen Schrift des Hinduismus: Bhagavad-gītā wie sie ist, Kapitel 3 & 4, gelesen von dem Dozenten Zorig, Teil 2 von 2

The Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krsna, said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Iksvaku. This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is, appears to be lost. That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by me to you, because you are My devotee as well as My friend and can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science.

Buddha Gautama, also known as Shakyamuni Buddha, was a great spiritual Master from ancient India. The rich treasury of Buddha’s spiritual doctrine on universal truths are studied and revered to this day for their deep wisdom and compassion. The Itivuttaka, which means “as it was said” in Pali, is a Buddhist scripture and part of the recollection of Buddha’s discourses. It is considered as one of the earliest of all Buddhist scriptures. “What are the three elements of escape?” “What are the three kinds of people found existing in the world?” “What are the three joyous utterances?”
