Shining World Compassion Award: North Valley Animal Rescue Group, Part 1 of 2

Starting from Butte County in November 2018, the wildfire rapidly spread into an area of 240 square miles in a few hours. North Valley Animal Disaster Group, a volunteer-based NGO, immediately sprang into action to assist animals displaced by the fire. “During the Camp Fire, we served over 10,000 animals here in Butte County.” Founded in 2002, the North Valley Animal Disaster Group (NVADG) work with public and private agencies to evacuate and shelter animal friends in emergency situations. They also educate communities in ways to protect animal companions during emergencies. Its members have demonstrated tremendous love in times of crisis. Despite all the losses and hardships, members of the organization managed to supply the shelters with food and much needed supplies for all the rescued animals. You are a marvelous example of courage and love, North Valley Animal Disaster Group! May the legend of your quick actions and selfless kindness spread far and wide to encourage more acts of compassion around the world.

We are honored to speak to one of their board members, Ms. Debbie Mueller. “All of our shelters and agencies have been greatly supported from all over the United States and other countries. And we served a lot of animals and for most people, our animals are part of our family and it’s just another important life that needs to be saved.” Debbie has graciously shared with us what we should do for our animal friends to prepare animal friends to prepare for unprecedented situations. “You should have a go plan for yourself and your animal and a go bag. So a plan being, ‘OK, where am I going to go if there is a disaster? Whose home can I go to? Do I have friends or family elsewhere? Are my pets or animals welcome?’ If you have large animals, you need to look at, are there surrounding stables or ranch land where you could take your animals?” We would like to give you the Shining World Compassion Award from Supreme Master Ching Hai for North Valley Animal Disaster Group in recognition of courageous selfless advocacy for voiceless animals, protecting, defending, and sheltering during adversity. With compliments and gratitude for your compassionate and benevolent commitment to save precious animal live.

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: The Noble Endeavors of Mercy for Animals, Part 1 of 2

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: The Noble Endeavors of Mercy for Animals, Part 1 of 2

Today, we are delighted to present a remarkable organization that has been working tirelessly for the last few decades to help inspire compassion and end animal cruelty. Founded by Mr. Milo Runkle in 1999, Mercy for Animals (MFA) is a leading international non-profit organization dedicated to protecting our precious animal friends. After witnessing the abuse of a farm animal for a high school agricultural project near his hometown in Ohio, USA, Mr. Runkle formed Mercy for Animals with the goal of ending the horrendous cruelty and promoting compassionate food choices and animal-free alternatives. This noble organization actively investigates the harsh realities hidden behind factory farm walls and aims to improve state-level policies and legislation for farm animal protection. Mark Devries, manager of special projects and drone investigation at Mercy for Animals and director of Speciesism: The Movie, explains why animals are not food, and why Mercy for Animals spreads the message of love and compassion. “Non-human animals are sentient, complex individuals with deep social and emotional lives, like ourselves. We share the very same brain structures and the very same collections of neuro-chemicals that function the same way, that allow for joy and sorrow and fear and anger, positive and negative.” Mercy for Animals believes that the greatest cruelty and injustice of our time concerns food production by the farm animal industry. This is the important Truth that the organization strives to share with the world. Posted online and via social media, Mercy for Animals’ undercover investigations have been especially effective in bringing that truth to the public. “It's our habits and the attitudes that we have been brought up with, that stop us from seeing something that's actually very clear: that causing harm, causing suffering which we’re all already opposed to, is something that we do when we support industrial animal agriculture, that causes suffering to billions of animals who are just as sentient as you and I are.” Witnessing the suffering of farm animals is a powerful tool of change in terms of both inner consciousness and outer social norms. Mark Devries shared with us his own experience of transformation sparked by directing Speciesism: The Movie, the 2013 award-winning documentary on industrial factory farming. “I actually became vegan when I was working on my first documentary ‘Speciesism: The movie.’ And that is when I started realizing that this is a fundamental issue of ethics and justice. And I could no longer come up with a defense that wasn't refuted for maintaining my current view of non-human animals and for maintaining my current practices. And it seemed to touch people very deeply and impact them very profoundly.”

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: The Noble Endeavors of Mercy for Animals, Part 2 of 2

Since its founding in 1999, Mercy For Animals has committed “to end the greatest cause of suffering on the planet, the exploitation of animals for food.” They believe the violence and discrimination against farm animals carry no less political and ethical weight than racism, slavery, and crimes against other human groups. Up to 2019, Mercy For Animals has launched more than 70 major investigations into cruelty cases within the animal farming industry, and guided several of the world’s largest food companies to adopt animal welfare policies. In the past two years, the organization’s efforts to change legislative and corporate animal welfare policies helped ease the pain of over 100 million animals and saved the lives of nearly 220,000. The suffering of farm animals exposed by Mercy For Animals has awakened the kindness in many people. Our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai greatly appreciates “their compassionate effort” and gratefully presents “US$20,000 to Mercy For Animals for their noble work, plus the Shining World Compassion Award, with all love and gratitude. May Heaven bless you and all involved with success and a long life of happiness.” “Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai, We are so grateful for your generous donation of US$20,000 on January 2, 2019. Your support fuels undercover investigations, legal victories, corporate commitments and social impact programs that create a kinder future for farmed animals. Because of you, 2018 was full of monumental successes at Mercy For Animals. You helped us release 8 undercover investigations exposing the deep horrors of commercial driftnet fishing, the plight of chicks and piglets born in factory farms and the suffering of mother pigs trapped in gestation crates. Mercy For Animals enters 2019 with stronger than ever plans to change the world for farmed animals with your support. Thank you for standing with us against cruelty and for compassion.”

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: Faithful Friends Animal Society

Today, our spotlight is on Faithful Friends Animal Society, a private, non-profit animal welfare organization with a no-kill shelter in Delaware, USA. Founded 20 years ago, the organization has saved countless dogs, cats and other animals. Founder and executive director, Ms. Jane Pierantozzi, shared some of their goals and achievements in an exclusive interview with us. “We’ve dramatically reduced the killing. We provide medical care. We also have a foster care system. If there are special needs and they don’t get adopted, they go into foster homes. And we also have ways to help people keep their pets in their homes. We also have a pet lifeline to help give people advice when they’re looking for resources for strays that they found. We have over 400 volunteers working side by side with about 70 employees.” Following a “No Kill” philosophy, the organization believes in treating every animal as an individual with dignity and respect. Hearing of their noble work in helping our precious co-inhabitants, Supreme Master Ching Hai: “thankfully present Faithful Friends Animal Society the Shining World Compassion Award plus a humble contribution of US$15,000 towards this noble society.” On June 12, 2019, our Association members joyfully presented the award and gifts to Ms. Jane Pierantozzi and her team at Faithful Friends Animal Society. “Dear Ms. Pierantozzi, It is with great admiration and gratitude that we present to Faithful Friends Animal Society the ‘Shining World Compassion Award’ for nurturing kindness towards and protecting animals. This Award is presented in recognition of the shelter’s noble advocacy to end euthanasia, its commitment to shelter and lovingly care for animals. Your exemplary efforts herald a new era of empathy and harmonious co-existence with our precious animal friends.” Ms. Jane shared with us these final thoughts before we parted ways. “I just want to thank You again, the Supreme Master and Your organization for Your love of animals and for Your gracious award today and the grant award that will help us with our mission to care for the animals. Also we’d just encourage other animal shelters across the world that care for dogs and cats to also open their heart to care for all animals and to embrace the plant-based diet, which we are promoting here.”

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue

Fifty miles (80 km) northwest of New York City, USA, lie the 230-acre (93 hectare) lush and charming Skylands Animal Sanctuary & Rescue, home to more than a hundred farm animal friends. The sanctuary founder, Mike Stura, used to be a truck driver and found new meaning in life by providing rescued animals a loving home. Over a year ago, Brianna, a pregnant cow courageously kicked down the door of a moving truck to escape a cruel fate. A call from the police at the scene woke up Mike and he immediately rushed to collect her. At the safety of the sanctuary two days later, Brianna gave birth to a healthy baby girl calf, Winter. Upon learning of this news, our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai tearfully offered the Shining World Compassion Award to Mike Stura and Skylands Sanctuary, “plus a humble US$15,000 contribution, with all love and gratitude in God’s mercy.” “Dear Mike, It is with great admiration and gratitude that we present to you the “Shining World Compassion Award” for the love and dedication shown towards animals, providing ‘a place for them, a place for hope’. You are nurturing kindness within the community and creating a brighter future for all of Earth’s co-inhabitants. We humbly present this Award in recognition of the haven you have provided, rescuing, sheltering and ensuring our precious animal friends have a forever home.” “For benevolently striving for a loving world for all beings, and for your gentleness and untiring kindness, we hereby applaud and celebrate the great compassionate deeds of Mike Stura. May God bless and protect you and Brianna’s family, as well as the kind police involved. With Great Honor, Love and Blessings in God’s Grace Supreme Master Ching Hai” “This is very, very nice. It's very cool. Thank you, Supreme Master. I don't know what to say. I'm touched. I’m moved. I'll try to do my best. Thank you for choosing us to support. I appreciate it tremendously and I appreciate the work that you do, to spread compassion and the word of a vegan lifestyle to the world. It's fantastic! I really thank you very much. Thank you.”

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: Saving Animals From Euthanasia, Part 1 of 2

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: Saving Animals From Euthanasia, Part 1 of 2

Our precious animal companions are often our best friends and beloved family members. As much as they depend on us for care and protection, they also fill our hearts and homes with abundant joy, love, and blessings. Yet sadly, not all dogs and cats find themselves in loving forever families. In Australia, approximately 211,000 animal companions end up in shelters annually with nearly 44,000 euthanized. Founded in 2003 by Sue Hedley, Western Australian group Saving Animals from Euthanasia (SAFE) is an animal welfare organization dedicated to ending animal euthanasia through rehoming solutions for crowded shelters. "SAFE’s mission is to ensure that no companion animal succumbs to euthanasia purely through lack of somewhere to stay and that the optimum quality of life is achieved for all companion animals." Ms. Sue Hedley believes that finding loving homes to foster our animal friends is a more practical, cost-efficient, and humane alternative to isolation in shelter cages. "When I started SAFE and realized what the need was, I never thought for a moment of building a big shelter and putting animals in cages. It was just autopilot for me to go straight into the foster care way of operation. I knew there was endless homes. Anyone can foster. It doesn’t have to be a lifelong commitment. In fact, we encouraged people just to give it a go, just a one-off time can save a life. So no cages, no buildings, no cost of staff, cleaning, food. Our foster carers generally are happy providing food. So, it’s a really low-cost model and so humane. An animal can be in care with SAFE for a year and it’s no different to whether they’re in a permanent home. They just end up with a family as they would be. So it’s just a win-win for everybody really. SAFE focuses on matching pets with people. Due to the possibilities of foster care, there’s no urgency to adopt pets, but rather it allows time for the right match to be made. When pets can be viewed or discussed at length by phone or photos or even videos, potential owners can get to know the pet’s personality, rather than visiting an institution to view animals in cages, where their future is uncertain. How better the choice the adopters are likely to make, knowing that any pet they view or inquire about is going to stay in a loved home until a well-matched permanent home is found. No more pity or guilt-based decisions."

Shining World Compassion Award Recipient: Saving Animals From Euthanasia, Part 2 of 2

SAFE’s model of placing animals in foster care while waiting for a permanent home has many benefits for all parties concerned. SAFE provides neutering, vaccinations, and microchips as well as personalized matching services to better address issues such as overpopulation and animals getting lost, mistreated or abandoned. “SAFE doesn’t judge pet relinquishment, but is more concerned about finding a solution and doing what is best for the pet. Often we find it is the circumstance force relinquishment and we can take action and offer support to enable a very grateful owner to keep their pet. Upon providing behavioral help, temporary care, or even transport to another state, the potential cost in logistics involved in preventing a forced relinquishment is very small in relation to the cost in logistics involved in taking on and rehoming a pet. And by doing so we assist in a positive outcome for both people and their pets.” Upon hearing of their life-saving deeds, Supreme Master Ching Hai gratefully presented “the Shining World Compassion Award to SAFE and a humble contribution of US$20,000 for this noble and smart cause, with so much love and thanks, in God’s mercy.” “Dear Sue, It is with much admiration and gratitude that we present to SAFE the ‘Shining World Compassion Award’ for ‘saving animal lives – challenging the norm through fostering.’ This Award is presented in recognition of your zero euthanasia, no cage policy, cleverly utilizing foster carers until a permanent home is found. Your exceptional endeavor is creating a time when pets will no longer be institutionalized, only kept in loving home-based care. For your kind and creative loving solution, for your vision, wisdom and selfless commitment, and for being a dedicated and noble role model, we hereby applaud and celebrate the compassionate deeds of Sue Hedley, Founder & President of Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE). With Great Honor, Love and Blessings in God’s Grace. Supreme Master Ching Hai”

Shining World Compassion and Hero Award Recipient: Damien Mander (vegan) – A Valiant Animal Defender

Damien served in elite Australian special operations military units when he was young. Exploring a number of occupations after completing his service, he arrived in Africa, where he discovered he could put his military skills to good use. Using his life savings, Mr. Mander founded the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) in 2009, to protect and preserve wildlife in many regions. The non-profit is a direct-action law enforcement organization. "The organization started with Damien training small units of anti-poaching rangers in Zimbabwe and then later in other parts of southern Africa, applying military derived tools and techniques to making those rangers more efficient, getting them the equipment and the basic training that they needed. And as time's gone on, what we found is that engagement with communities, getting the communities onside, understanding the value of the wildlife and the broader ecosystems and environment that those animals live in, is the only way to come up with a permanent solution." Among the projects done by Damien Mander are the recently created “Akashinga,” or “The Brave Ones” program and introducing economic and social opportunities as well as the plant-based lifestyle to women in rural Zimbabwe. The Award Letter from our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai for this noble wildlife protector reads: "Dear Damien, It is with great admiration and gratitude that we present to you the 'Shining World Compassion and Hero Award' for empowering rangers to protect wildlife. You have created Akashinga ('The Brave Ones'), a team of heroic field warriors made up of underprivileged women from the rural Zimbabwe community. These highly-trained female rangers are guardians of the nation’s precious and endangered wildlife. We humbly offer this Award in recognition of your foundation’s exemplary efforts to actively stop poaching, the military-grade training you provide, and the dignity and self-belief given to locals. For your innovative solution to conservation, for teaching others that real love for animals begins on out plate, and for your unparalleled skills and noble wisdoms, we hereby applaud and celebrate the heroic and compassionate deeds of Damien Mander. May you and all involved in your care be forever protected and blessed by all Heavens and Earth. With all Love and gratitude. With Great Honour, Love and Blessings in God’s Grace Supreme Master Ching Hai"
