Animal Heroes: Selflessly Assisting with Pure Hearts

I’m sure you have heard numerous stories of how people have demonstrated great courage and compassion in saving thee lives of others. We animals can also feel the pain and needs of those around us, be it animal or human, and will try and help in any way possible. Here are some tales of brave animals in our world! Sally the tabby cat in Melbourne, Australia, and her human companion Craig Jeeves, narrowly escaped a house fire. “She jumped on my head and sort of like was screaming at me and woke me up; otherwise, I wouldn’t have got up,” Craig said. Most of his house was lost to the blaze, and the fire department said it was lucky Craig got out in time. Animals help and save others out of our inherent good nature and ask for no reward. Even though we look a bit different than you, we cherish and respect life just like humans.

The Wonderful Earth Inhabitants, Part 1 of 2

One of the reasons October 2nd was specifically selected as “World Farm Animals Day” is that it coincides with the birthday of one of the modern era’s greatest practitioners of nonviolence, Mahatma Gandhi - the “Father of India.” Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” and, “I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” As we take this opportunity to contemplate the meaning of World Farm Animals Day, we call on humanity to be aware that all beings should live as equals and be treated with respect.

Animal Heroes: Love Beyond Species

On today’s program, we will show you some examples of animals assisting other animals, regardless of their species. Macaque Monkeys Adopt Stray Puppies. In January 2016, people in the southern Indian city of Erode observed a macaque monkey caring for a little stray puppy. She acted like a mother, defending him from unfriendly dogs and removing fleas and dirt from his coat. The loving bond between the two animals melted many people’s hearts. It certainly seems true that love knows no borders. Many times, when there is an animal in need, another animal will provide assistance without hesitation. Our next story demonstrates the compassion of a dolphin for two stranded whales. A big hip, hip, hurrah for all the noble animals featured today! We are very proud of what you have done and you truly are excellent examples of your respective species’ inherent kindness.

The Vivacious Vegan Ambassador, Jane "Unchained" Velez-Mitchell, Part 1 of 3

Today, we are honored to present to you the extraordinary Ms. Jane Velez-Mitchell. For most of her career, Jane was an internationally renowned television host and investigative journalist. She is the laureate of both the Los Angeles and New York Emmy Awards for excellence in broadcasting. In addition, she is also a New York Times bestselling author. In developing the concept for the Jane Unchained Network, Ms. Velez-Mitchell cleverly took advantage of citizen journalism combined with social media, realizing that every person with a cell phone and a Facebook account can contribute to the vegan movement. Jane Velez-Mitchell has a special Christmas message for us. "The best way to honor Christmas and the spirit of Christmas is to stop eating animals and their byproducts, and to have a compassionate, kind holiday. And you know, Jesus Christ went into the temple in Jerusalem and freed the animals. He was the original, open rescue, animal activist."

Donkeys: Our Clever and Empathetic Helpers

My ancestors were wild donkeys who lived in Africa 6,000 years ago. We are genetically related to Nubian wild asses and were domesticated to assist with transporting food and goods. We can also adapt to all types of terrain. Our long, narrow hooves enable us to walk steadily on rugged trails. This allow us to sometimes join rescue operations in mountainous areas. Being social animals, we closely bond with other donkeys. Cleanliness is valued by us and we assist each other in grooming. With a strong instinct for self-preservation, donkeys stay away from danger. That’s why we're often considered stubborn when actually we're only following our instinct. We can be your most loyal and reliable companion once you have earned our trust. By nature, we’re gentle, kindhearted, loving, and brave in the face of challenges. For thousands of years, we've generously served humanity by offering our labor and tirelessly working hard.

The Fry Family – Crafting Food for Change Since 1991, Part 3 of 3

On today’s program, we will introduce you to Wally Fry’s daughter, Tammy Fry, who wishes to change the world and its people through the way they eat. Tammy is not only the Marketing Director of Fry’s, she is also a famous vegan blogger, athlete extraordinaire, public speaker, plant-based nutritionist, and the founder of Meat Free Mondays in South Africa and Australia. Tammy is a born vegetarian. "Bacon for a child could be a carrot. I mean, they don’t know that that came off an animal’s body, unless you’ve actually explained that to them. And I think sometimes, giving them the truth about what they’re eating will naturally turn them off.” “I learned really young, that in order to change people, you need to inspire them. So, you have to focus on the solution and show them, that actually, this is a great way to live; you inspire them to change rather. Having being an athlete myself for so many years, doing many hours of training every single day on a plant-based diet, showed me that was actually possible."

Chipmunks - Enjoyers of Solitude

Chipmunks - Enjoyers of Solitude

We chipmunks are the smallest members of the squirrel family and are known for our burrowing habits and love of nuts. We are identified by our pudgy cheeks, bushy tails, and white and black stripes that run down our backs. We can come in various shades of brown, yellow, and gray fur. Chipmunks like to be alone and we normally ignore one another and are only seen in pairs during the mating season in spring. In short, like hermits, we like to keep to ourselves! As we are not very social, each chipmunk has his or her own burrow. Chipmunks construct expansive underground abodes which can be between 3 to 4 meters in length, with several well-hidden entrances. Though chipmunks like staying in forest areas, we’re also comfortable in other settings, like urban spaces. You can find us in city parks, around hedges, and in backyards. We are quite flexible and can adapt to a wide variety of living surroundings!

The Fry Family – Crafting Food for Change Since 1991, Part 2 of 3

In almost 30 years of running a business, Mr. Fry’s role has changed and evolved over time. He generously shared these changes with us. What is the future of food? Mr. Fry explains that there will be many changes concerning the marketing of foods and its consumption in the future. “There’s a couple of bad things going on with food and that’s plastic. And of course, you know, meat and animal products. So, consciousness is growing in the world. And I think that as we get deeper and deeper into this movement or evolution of humankind, supermarkets will change. We will become more natural with everything. We will have less packaging, things will not be able to be transported long distances and therefore have to be in plastic. Things will change and people will stop buying bottled water. I think those things are gonna change without any doubt. There’s no doubt at all, in my mind.”

It’s Time to Acknowledge the Rights of Animals, Part 1 of 2

Do you know that December 10th is our day, International Animal Rights Day? In 1998, the organization Uncaged launched, on the same date as Human Rights Day, the first-ever International Animal Rights Day. Uncaged was founded in 1993, by Angela Roberts and Lynn Williamson and is now known as the Centre for Animals and Social Justice (CASJ). which acts as a voice for animals by carrying out pioneering research and furthering just animal treatment by promoting reforms that could better our welfare. Another UK-based group called Surge. Surge started “The Official Animal Rights March” in 2016 that has since become an annual event held not just in London, UK, but also around our world. The gathering’s purpose is to spark vegans everywhere to speak up for the animals and become active in driving positive change in their local communities.

"Ethics Into Action: Henry Spira and the Animal Rights Movement" – Interview with Dr. Peter Singer, Part 2 of 3

In this series, we are very honored to have Dr. Peter Singer with us to share more about his book, "Ethics Into Action: Henry Spira and the Animal Rights Movement." “Henry Spira was always concerned to try to reduce the oppression of the strong against the weak. He was always on the side of the oppressed. Those most in need of help. And I think if we follow that example, ...then I think that’s a very good guide for how we should act in the world.” Dr. Singer emphasizes that all beings are entitled to have rights; we should not limit such sanctions to only those who understand what the concept of “rights” means. “And similarly, it should not mean that nonhuman animals don’t have rights. We should not think of rights as only for humans. These are rights that all sentient beings should have to the extent that they can benefit from them. So, these are not really human rights. These are rights that we think should go to all beings who can benefit by the protections that they offer. And that’s why they should not be limited to members of our species.”

Save Our Precious Animals: Wildlife Conservation Day

“December 4, 2012, will be the first-ever Wildlife Conservation Day. Our goal is to inform more people about this global conservation crisis. Attacks on elephants and rhinos are multiplying at an alarming rate. Species around the globe, such as tigers in Asia, are endangered. By some estimates, the black market for wildlife trafficking is rivaled in size only by the illegal arms and drug trade. The slaughter of endangered species robs communities of income from tourism, reduces biodiversity, encourages corruption, and undermines good governance.” In addition to elephants, rhinos, and tigers, dozens of other endangered and threatened species are victims of wildlife trafficking. As today is Wildlife Conservation Day, I’d like to suggest six things you can do to honor it….

Hillside Animal Sanctuary: A Countryside Paradise

In 1995, Wendy Valentine established the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Frettenham, Norwich, UK, after seeing the enormous suffering of egg-laying hens in the poultry industry. From the beginning, Ms. Valentine has campaigned against factory farms and done her utmost to help the victims of their heartless operations. In addition to rescuing animals, she works to raise awareness of the constant agony of the animals on the farms. Her selfless love and concern for animals was already well known. Hillside’s growth over the years was made possible by the generosity of a sympathetic public. We have good hearts and instinctively know how to treat animals with love and respect. When this translates into adopting a vegan diet, we benefit our animal co-inhabitants, ourselves, and the whole planet.

Shining World Compassion Award - Mr. Ram Bahadur Neupane, The Guardian Angel of Bovine Friends

Today, Iet’s travel to Kathmandu, Nepal, to meet a saintly social worker, Mr. Ram Bahadur Neupane. Gentle and kind, he has dedicated nearly a decade of his life to rescue distressed and neglected cows wandering the streets of Nepal. Apart from providing them with food, medical care, and love, he has created a safe haven to shelter them for life. Our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai, upon learning of Mr. Neupane’s noble efforts, gratefully offered: “US$30,000 and the Shining World Compassion Award.” “I believe the Earth is a common home for everyone. Everyone should be allowed to live. We want to provide shelter and protection for everyone, from the elderly fathers, mothers, mentally challenged people, from our brothers and sisters living in the streets, to street dogs and to all the beings. This is our broader vision.”

"Ethics Into Action: Henry Spira and the Animal Rights Movement" – Interview with Dr. Peter Singer, Part 1 of 3

Dr. Peter Singer is an Australian moral philosopher and professor who now teaches bioethics at Princeton University in the US. He first became internationally well-known after the publication of his book “Animal Liberation” in 1975. The theories presented in this book inspired numerous individuals to work towards ensuring the welfare of animals. First published in 1998, “Ethics into Action” tells the inspiring story of Henry Spira. Respected as one of the most effective animal rights’ activists of the 20th century, Henry Spira’s creativity and careful thought set the standard for the animal rights movement. “And I think the book is still a useful tool for activists in the animal movement, but for any activists who are fighting corporations that abuse the environment or workers.”

The Ageless Vegan Health Coach, Linda Middlesworth, Part 2 of 2

Today, at the age of 75, Linda continues to wow everyone around her with her astonishing vitality, physical and mental strength, and effectiveness as a certified health professional. Having experienced the liberating health benefits of veganism, Linda never misses an opportunity to share her knowledge. Another initiative of hers is to organize protests and rescue operations for animals. For over 20 years, she worked hard to combat the cruel practices of the Ringling Brother’s Circus, helping to bring about its closure in 2017, after 146 years of operation. She donned a test rat suit to the point of heat-exhaustion demonstrating for SB 1249, the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetic Act, which requires that cosmetics sold in California be not tested on animals, starting in 2020. Thanks in part to her efforts, SB 1249 was signed into law in September 2018.

Celebrate Thanksgiving by Giving Thanks for Life

Thanksgiving Day is an annual national holiday in the United States and Canada. According to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), more than 46 million turkeys are killed annually for Thanksgiving. Can you believe that in the 21st century, some human beings are so insensitive to suffering and brutality? There are so many plant-based food options you can explore for your celebration of gratitude. If you truly want to express your gratitude for God’s blessings with a feast, I would suggest that killing my kind for food, or any animal for that matter, is totally inappropriate. So, it’s time to break from that old tradition and try something new. And one of those is to Adopt Turkey instead of eating one.

Katie Cantrell: Presenting the Realities of Food Sustainability and Animal Welfare

Welcome to our program “Katie Cantrell: Presenting the Realities of Food Sustainability and Animal Welfare,” that introduces an admirable American vegan activist and the non-profit organization she created, the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition (FFAC). The Coalition’s mission is to inform and empower the people to save animals and the environment, as well as highlight the benefits we can gain by changing our everyday food choices. Katie and other FFAC members have made 2,000-plus presentations, which are free of charge and last for about 45 minutes. Over the years, the non-profit has reached over 111,000 people. FFAC wants to help create an informed consumer who will demand plant-based products because they have a basic understanding of where food comes from and highly value a sustainable food system.
