It’s always good to be mentally prepared and here is a preparatory parenting tip. Being exposed to a disaster can be overwhelming to children and many lack the tools and experience to cope with traumatic events. Therefore, they depend on the adults in their lives to give them a sense of security and help them manage their emotions. The National Association of School Psychologists recommends that during a traumatic period parents stay calm and reassure children that they will be taken care of and that life will go back to normal. Encourage your child to share their feelings and concerns in a safe and accepting environment. It is important to listen, empathize, and normalize their feelings while answering their questions. Additionally, parents can offer their children activities that enable them to process their experiences, help them manage their feelings such as anxiety, and build problem-solving skills to disaster-related events. Focus on your child’s resiliency and their competencies and help them recognize the past actions they took that helped them cope when they were afraid or upset.
