One of the very popular couplets (traditionally pasted on doorways of Chinese families on lunar New Year’s Eve) is “The big belly bears all that’s unbearable under the sun; the smiling face laughs at all that’s absurd in the world” which depicts so remarkably the magnanimity and optimism of this Maitreya Buddha of great mercy and compassion. The principal guidelines of various practicing methods to follow the example of Maitreya Buddha are: being compassionate and practice non-killing, refraining from eating meat, learning to look upon all things in the world with compassion, helping the poor and needy, and treating people who did wrong with tolerance and forgiveness. We present to you the enlightening teaching of Buddha. “Hearken single-mindedly! In radiant great samādhi, The one with unsurpassed merit Will rightfully appear in the world. He will pronounce the true Dharma, And all will be infused with it, Like the thirsty drinking sweet nectar. All will swiftly set off on the Liberation Path.”
