Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations: Selection from Book 4, Part 2 of 2

Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations: Selection from Book 4, Part 2 of 2

Founding his beliefs on the teachings of Stoicism, the Roman emperor was also diligent in finding his own way of self-improvement. This 12-volume work has been revered by many other philosophers over the centuries and is praised as a real testament to a government of duty and service. We now continue with excerpts from the personal reflective notes of Marcus Aurelius in Book 4 of “Meditations.” “What is ‘eternal’ fame? Emptiness. Then what should we work for? Only this: proper understanding; unselfish action; truthful speech. A resolve to accept whatever happens as necessary and familiar, flowing like water from that same source and spring. Everything [is] transitory – the knower and the known. Constant awareness that everything is born from change. The knowledge that there is nothing nature loves more than to alter what exists and make new things like it.”

Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations: Selection from Book 4, Part 1 of 2

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor of the 2nd century, also known as the last of the Five Good Emperors, after Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, and Antoninus Pius. Marcus Aurelius wrote personal notes and ideas on Stoic philosophy and spirituality as a source of guidance for himself. These notes, originally written in medieval Greek, formed a collection titled “Meditations.” Today we’ll read a segment from Marcus Aurelius’ “Meditations,” in which a very practical wisdom is simply put for everyone to understand and benefit from. “No random actions, none not based on underlying principles. People try to get away from it all – to the country, to the beach, to the mountains. You always wish that you could too. Which is idiotic: you can get away from it anytime you like. By going within. Nowhere you can go is more peaceful - more free of interruptions - than your own soul.”

From Hinduism’s Holy Vedas: Hymns of the Samaveda, First Part, Book I, Chapter I

Hinduism is believed to be one of the oldest living religions on Earth. The earliest Hindu spiritual text, the Rig Veda, was complied in approximately 900 B.C. Other sacred Hindu scriptures include the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ramayana, among others. One of the most cherished values of Hinduism is “ahimsa,” or non-violence born of respect for all life. We now invite you to listen to an excerpt from Hinduism’s sacred text, the Samaveda, First Part, Book 1, Chapter I. “O Agni, bring us radiant light to be our mighty sustenance, for thou art our visible deity!” To thee, illuminer of night, O Agni, day by day with prayer, bringing thee reverence, we come. Agni is head and height of heaven, the master of the earth is he; he quickens the waters’ seed. Agni, the Sage, the Lord of Strength, hath moved around the sacred gifts, giving the offeror precious things. His heralds bear him up aloft, the God who knows all that lives, the Sun, that all may look on him. Praise Agni in the sacrifice, the Sage whose holy laws are true, the God who drives grief away.”

Selection from “Language,” an Essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson (vegetarian)

Ralph Waldo Emerson was a renowned 19th-century American essayist, philosopher, lecturer, poet, and a leader of the transcendental philosophical movement. Emerson is most famous for his essays, through which he expresses ideas of freedom, spirituality, individuality, the great ability of humans to realize almost everything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. The essay “Nature” emphasizes the spirituality of nature, which he referred to as the “Universal Being,” and the human-nature connection. “Man is conscious of a universal soul within or behind his individual life, wherein, as in a firmament, the natures of Justice, Truth, Love, Freedom, arise and shine. This universal soul, he calls Reason: it is not mine, or thine, or his, but we are its; we are its property and men. Spirit is the Creator. Spirit hath life in itself. And man in all ages and countries, embodies it in his language, as the Father.”

From the Book of Mormon: Excerpts from the Book of Moroni – Chapters 1-7, Part 2 of 2

Through Divine assistance, Joseph Smith was able to translate the Book of Mormon into English. Along with the Holy Bible, it remains an important scripture to the millions of Mormon faithful around the world. We now continue with Chapter 7 from The Book of Mormon’s “Book of Moroni,” with its wise elaborations about hope, faith, and pure-heartedness. “Therefore, if a man have faith he must have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope. And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.” “And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. …Therefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail - But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoever is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.”

From the Book of Mormon: Excerpts from the Book of Moroni – Chapters 1-7, Part 1 of 2

The Book of Mormon contains the sacred religious text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon Church. The founder of the church was the early 19th-century beloved spiritual leader Joseph Smith, who experienced a series of visions of God and Lord Jesus Christ. Today we will read excerpts from “The Book of Moroni,” the concluding part of the Book of Mormon. We’ll learn how through the wise word of God one can always be in Hiers presence, while keeping a perfect vision of distinguishing between right and wrong. “Therefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against Him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually. But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; therefore, everything which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve Him, is inspired of God.”

How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (vegetarian), Part 3 of 3

How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (vegetarian), Part 3 of 3

“Now the important thing that everyone must clearly understand is that, for him who is right in the midst of the objective civilization of our time, it is very difficult to advance to the knowledge of the higher worlds. He can do so only if he works energetically within himself. At a time when the conditions of outward life were simpler, spiritual exaltation was easier of attainment.” “He who seeks for higher knowledge must create it within himself; he himself must instill it into his soul. It cannot be done by study; it can only be done through living.” “If I meet a brother and blame him for his weakness, I rob myself of power to win the higher knowledge; but if I try to enter lovingly into his merits, I then gather such power.” “Every moment, in which we set ourselves to banish from our consciousness whatever remains in it of disparaging, suspicious judgment of our fellow-men, brings us nearer to the knowledge of higher things.”

How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (vegetarian), Part 2 of 3

An eloquent public speaker and gifted writer, he gave over 6,000 lectures in his lifetime and gained recognition as a literary critic. His writings cover a wide range of subjects, and he published more than 25 books, including “Mysticism at the Dawn of the Modern Age,” “The Way of Initiation,” and “Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path: A Philosophy of Freedom.” “If we do not develop within ourselves this deeply-rooted feeling that there is something higher than ourselves, we shall never find enough strength to evolve to something higher. The Initiate has only acquired the power of lifting his intellect to the heights of knowledge by guiding his heart into the depths of veneration and devotion. The heights of the Spirit can only be reached by passing through the portals of humility. Man can certainly have the right to gaze upon the Reality, but he must first earn this right. You can only acquire right knowledge when you are ready to esteem it. There are laws in the spiritual life, as in the physical life.”

How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (vegetarian), Part 1 of 3

Born in 1861, Dr Rudolf Steiner was a great Austrian polymath, a philosopher and scientist who made influential contributions in the fields of education, science, spirituality, and medicine. Today we’ll read a passage from Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s book “The Way of Initiation,” in which he shares his deep inner realizations on how we are all capable of discovering the inner knowledge and treasures of the Spirit. “In the first place, he who strives earnestly after the higher knowledge need not be afraid of any difficulty or obstacle in his search for an Initiate who shall be able to lead him into the profounder secrets of the world. For it is a strict law with all Initiates to withhold from no man the knowledge that is due him. But there is an equally strict law which insists that no one shall receive any occult knowledge until he is worthy and well prepared.”

From the Essenes Gospel of Peace: Excerpts from Book One – Purification in God’s Love, Part 2 of 2

The Essenes were often found in communities where meditation or prayer was an important part of daily life that was dedicated to God. With respect for all forms of life, the Essenes’ diet was purely vegetarian. Today we continue with enlightening excerpts from the Essene Gospel of Peace, as we learn more about the important connection between our physical and spiritual states. “When you can gaze on the brightness of the noonday Sun with unflinching eyes, you can then look upon the blinding Light of your Heavenly Father, which is a thousand times brighter than the brightness of a thousand Suns. But how should you look upon the blinding Light of your Heavenly Father, when you cannot even bear the shining of the blazing Sun? Believe me, the Sun is as the flame of a candle beside the Sun of Truth of the Heavenly Father. Have but faith, therefore, and hope, and love. I tell you truly, you shall not want your reward. If you believe in my words, you believe in Him who sent me, who is the Lord of all, and with whom all things are possible.”

From the Essenes Gospel of Peace: Excerpts from Book One – Purification in God’s Love, Part 1 of 2

In 1947, a young Bedouin boy at Qumran, on the banks of the Dead Sea, discovered a ceramic pot inside an empty cave. Within the broken pot were pages of ancient texts. A total of 850 sacred texrs were eventually discovered, all around 2000 years old. These scriptures, now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, contained many details about an ancient spiritual group called the Essenes. Other teachings of the Essenes have been unearthed from the Secret Archives of the Vatican. We’ll now read from the Essene Gospel of Peace, a text endowed with eye-opening ancient wisdom for all times. “Therefore, I say to you, love your true brothers in the will of God a thousand times more than your brothers by blood. FOR YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS LOVE. FOR YOUR EARTHLY MOTHER IS LOVE. FOR THE SON OF MAN IS LOVE. It is by love, that the Heavenly Father and the Earthly Mother and the Son of Man become one. For the Spirit of the Son of Man was created from the Spirit of the Heavenly Father, and His body from the body of the Earthly Mother. Become, therefore, perfect as the Spirit of your Heavenly Father and the body of your Earthly Mother are perfect.”

From the Sacred Texts of Hòa Hảo Buddhism: “The Dead Cannot Eat” and “Looking for the Buddha”

Hòa Hảo Buddhism is a religion based on the teachings of the Buddha. It was founded by Prophet Huỳnh Phú Sổ in 1939. It is named after the Hòa Hảo village where it was established in Châu Đốc Province of Âu Lạc, also known as Vietnam. The two words “Hòa Hảo” imply harmony and goodness. Today we present excerpts of the teachings of Prophet Huỳnh Phú Sổ. “THE DEAD CANNOT EAT” “After that, he recited a poem titled "Be Filial" and advised everyone to make offerings with vegan food: Repay the ancestors’ favor the Buddhist way, by offering vegan food to your deceased parents. That is the pure and benevolent practice and their souls will be light and liberated.” “LOOKING FOR THE BUDDHA” “One day, my father appeared in my dream and scolded me: ‘A living Buddha is here on Earth already, and you still don't practice spiritually? Let me tell you. You keep chasing after fame and gain, later if you suffer, don't complain, and it will be too late to regret. This is the final age. If you don't practice spiritually, you will regress into a suffering realm forever.’”

From the Book of the Secrets of Enoch (vegetarian): Excerpts from Chapters 1-20, Part 2 of 2

Enoch was a venerated patriarch and great-grandfather of Noah. After his son, Methuselah, was born, Enoch began to “walk with God” - that is, he began to seek, to know, to serve, and to pray to God, and he continued this for the next 300 years! Throughout his life, he visited Heaven in his visions and dreams. But the main message is one of hope, that God will be the guiding Light for those who are righteous. “And from there those men took me and bore me up on to the sixth Heaven, and there I saw seven bands of angels, very bright and very glorious, and their faces shining more than the Sun’s shining, glistening, and there is no difference in their faces, or behavior, or manner of dress; and these make the orders, and learn the goings of the stars, and the alteration of the Moon, or revolution of the Sun, and the good government of the world. They make commandments and instruction, and sweet and loud singing, and all songs of praise.”

From the Book of the Secrets of Enoch (vegetarian): Excerpts from Chapters 1-20, Part 1 of 2

The Book of the Secrets of Enoch, also known as the Second Book of Enoch, or Old Bulgarian Enoch, is an ancient religious text which describes the intensity of the Antediluvian (pre-Flood) time period. The Book of Enoch contains unique material on why the Great Flood was morally necessary, why some angels fell from Heaven, and prophetic revelations of the thousand-year reign of the Messiah. “And those men took me thence, and led me up on to the third [realm], and placed me there; and I looked downwards, and saw the produce of these places, such as has never been known for goodness. And I saw all the sweet-flowering trees and beheld their fruits, which were sweet-smelling, and all the foods borne by them bubbling with fragrant exhalation. And in the midst of the trees of life, in that place upon which the Lord rests, when He goes up into paradise; and this tree is of ineffable goodness and fragrance, and adorned more than every existing thing; and on all sides it is in form gold-looking and vermilion and fire-like and covers all, and it has produce from all fruits.”

In global communities, many Sikh practitioners also continue the caring and noble spiritual lineage of vegetarianism. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji contains Shabads (Hymns) that are often recited by Sikh Gurus and other Saints. In recognition of its enlightening wisdom, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been bestowed Guruship for spiritual guidance to all humanity. “You are my Father, and You are my Mother. You are my Relative, and You are my Brother. You are my Protector everywhere; why should I feel any fear or anxiety? By Your Grace, I recognize You. You are my Shelter, and You are my Honor. Without You, there is no other; the entire Universe is the Arena of Your Play. You have created all beings and creatures. As it pleases You, You assign tasks to one and all. All things are Your Doing; we can do nothing ourselves. Meditating on the Naam, I have found great peace. Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, my mind is cooled and soothed. Through the Perfect Guru, congratulations are pouring in. 11:41) Nanak is victorious on the arduous battlefield of life!”

Shabad Kirtan is a form of devotional singing of passages from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The word “Naam” means to know your inner Self in unity with the Creator. Today we feature Shabad Kirtan from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, as presented by Bhai Tejinder Singh Group. “The Bani of His Word emanated from the Primal Lord. It eradicates all anxiety. The Transcendent Lord has given me His support. The house of pain and disease has been demolished. The men and women celebrate. The Lord God, Har, Har, has extended His Mercy. Buddhism's Sacred Scripture: The Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Dharma, Chapter 4, Part 4 of 6

Today, we would like to present an excerpt from Chapter 4 of this sutra – Belief and Understanding. “World-Honored One, this old man with his great riches is none other than the Tathagata, and we are all like the Buddha’s sons. The Tathagata constantly tells us that we are His sons. In addition, though we expounded and set forth the Buddha wisdom for the sake of the Bodhisattvas, we ourselves did not aspire to attain it. Why do I say this? Because the Buddha, knowing that our minds delight in lesser doctrines, employed the power of expedient means to preach in a way that was appropriate for us. So, we did not know that we were in truth the sons of the Buddha. But now, at least we know it. ‘With regard to the Buddha wisdom, the World-Honored One is never begrudging. Why do I say this? From times past, we have in truth been the sons of the Buddha, but we delighted in nothing but lesser doctrines. If we had the kind of mind that delighted in great ones, then the Buddha would have preached the Dharma of the Great Vehicle for us.’”

Buddhism's Sacred Scripture: The Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Dharma, Chapter 4, Part 3 of 6

“Later, he spoke to his son again, saying, ‘You must keep on at this work and not leave me anymore.’ By the end of this time, the son felt that he was understood and trusted, and he could come and go at ease. At that time, the rich man fell ill and knew he would die before long. He spoke to his impoverished son, saying, ‘I now have great quantities of gold, silver, and rare treasures, you are to take complete charge of the amounts I have. This is what I have in mind, and I want you to carry out my wishes. Because from now on, you and I will not behave as two different persons.’ After some time had passed, the father perceived that his son was bit by bit, becoming more self-assured, and despised his former low opinion of himself. Realizing that his own end was approaching, he proceeded to make this announcement: ‘This is my son, who was born to me. He abandoned me and run away, and for over fifty years he wandered about suffering hardship. This is in truth my son, and I in truth, am his father. Now everything that belongs to me, all my wealth and possessions, shall belong entirely to this son of mine.’ When the impoverished son heard these words of his father, he was filled with great joy, having gained what he never had before.”

From the Sacred Text of the Universal White Brotherhood: Peace Be with You, Part 2 of 2

Today, we continue with excerpts from Master Beinsa Douno’s lecture titled, “Peace Be with You.” We’ll explore, through a beautiful example from the Master, how one could join the Heavenly Concert Hall of the Lord by tuning in one’s own soul, heart, and mind to the Divine harmony of the Universe. “Resurrection is a process which the Spirit of God performs in our life, a grand process, through which God restores that primordial Harmony. One day, when your ears open and you begin to listen a little more and further away than you listen now, you will notice that throughout the whole universe there is a movement of certain tones which the objects – the springs, the trees, the leaves – emit, and you will hear majestic (inner Heavenly) Music which spreads from one end of the world to the other, and then you will understand the inner meaning of life. And Christ, through His resurrection, wishes to introduce you into this Concert Hall. He will pay for you, He will give you each a ticket, but will you have an ear to understand this Divine music when you enter that Hall and see that concert, that playing?”

From the Sacred Text of the Universal White Brotherhood: Peace Be with You, Part 1 of 2

The spiritual lineage of the Universal White Brotherhood was founded by Master Beinsa Douno, also known as Peter Konstantinov Deunov, of Bulgaria, in 1897. Master Beinsa Douno taught that the qualities of humility, obedience, honesty, goodness, intelligence and nobility are foremost in spiritual practice. He explained that one should walk the path of Love, Wisdom, and Truth. The Universal White Brotherhood believes that God is in everything: in the stones, the plants, the water, the air, the animals, and the light. Master Beinsa Douno practiced and preached a vegetarian diet. Today, we present to you the sacred teachings of the Universal White Brotherhood from one of Master Beinsa Douno’s lectures titled, “Peace Be with You.” We will understand more about how we can make “music” out of the difficulties in life by tuning the soul to a higher Divine order. “In human nature there are, we said, four temperaments – choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine and nervous – these are four states within man. They correspond to the human soul, mind, heart and life. There are four main strings which we should know how to tighten and relax. …through the Spirit of the Conductor Who will raise His baton, we will create the most pleasant Music in our life.”
