The Vegan Society: Leading the Way to a Kinder World, Part 2 of 2

The Vegan Society carried out some research to estimate the number of vegans, there are over 600,000 of us in Great Britain. So there have been some studies that show as many as one in three Brits now follow the flexitarian diet, even if it’s just a few meals in a week, it still helps the animals, and it helps to make veganism mainstream. As a way of promoting a healthy plant-based lifestyle, the Vegan Society has been actively encouraging the UK government to change their existing policies, they’re calling for those subsidies to be moved to healthy plant foods, push government money to sponsor the foods that are good and sustainable for people, so we’ve got an all-round benefit to it.

The Vegan Society: Leading the Way to a Kinder World, Part 1 of 2

The Vegan Society does many things to help people shift to the vegan lifestyle, including developing a trademark system to label foods that are purely vegan. It allows clear labeling; it allows for consumers to make the right choice. And it allows not just vegans, but any consumer, because it fits their diet requirements, or even on a religious basis. And the longevity of this is that the more products that become “vegan suitable,” the more it’s having an impact on the environment and in the long run, it’s saving animal lives, and reducing animal suffering. And this creates a vegan world out there.

Vegan World Series: Vegan China, The Lion of Peace, Part 2 of 2

The Chinese government, the most powerful! They can tell their people what to do. And their people will listen. More than any other countries on the planet. Do you understand what I am saying? I have very big faith in Chinese government, in their power, in their influence on their citizens. And if Chinese blaze the trail on vegetarianism, then we will have hope. We have more hope, a lot more hope to save this Earth for our next generation. So that they live in health, happiness, and possibly spirituality. So that is grace, yeah? But at least, the trend is going toward this direction.

Celebrating Veganism at the Berlin Envrionmental Festival

When we talk about mitigating climate change, it is important to point out the path of action which has the highest impact. The simple and most effective act of changing to a vegan lifestyle has a greater effect than riding a bicycle or using an electric car, due to the wide range of benefits for the planet. The plant-based diet conserves water, energy, land, and has the lowest pollutants when it comes to food production. The organic option of plant foods is the most beneficial, as it is bee and bird friendly, and preserves water and land purity, which in turn makes a safer and healthier planet for all beings.

A History of Veganism – Part 4 of 4: Advent of the Vegan Movement

In previous episodes, we learned that the cornerstone of major spiritual faiths and philosophies of the world is benevolence towards all beings, including our animal co-inhabitants. The concept of animal rights, however, was not treated explicitly until respected English philosopher Henry Salt published his 1894 classic, "Animals' Rights - Considered in Relation to Social Progress," in which the erudite social reformer expressed his hope for an end to animal mistreatment.

A History of Veganism - Part 3 of 4: Modern Era

In part two of our series, we saw that vegetarianism enjoyed resurgence in Europe during the Renaissance period, an influential time for the arts, culture and intellectual thought. Closely following the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment from the 17th to the 18th century, was a time in Europe marked by an emphasis on empiricism, which is to say, reason and scientific methods as a way to true knowledge. It was a new era in Western thought that saw significant advances in such ideals as individual liberty, democracy, women’s rights, and the separation of church and state. Eminent Enlightenment philosophers such as Voltaire of France and Genevan Jean-Jacques Rousseau, spoke about the sentience of animals.

A History of Veganism – Part 2 of 4: From the Ancient Period to the Early Modern Era

In part one, we saw that vegetarianism has its roots in the world's ancient spiritual traditions. It should be of no surprise that vegetarianism and religion are so closely associated, considering that the cornerstone of virtually all major faiths and philosophies in the world is the universally recognized golden rule, to treat others kindly, which is the underlying tenet of vegetarianism and veganism." Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."-Lord Jesus Christ. This perhaps is the most famous principle that Lord Jesus Christ conveyed during His Sermon on the Mount. We would like to honor Christianity, the world's largest religion, by exploring the various existing written records and other information that suggest Lord Jesus and the early Christians were vegetarians or vegans.

A History of Veganism - Part 1 of 4: Ancient Period

Far from being a new phenomenon, vegetarianism and veganism have enjoyed a long and diverse history since the beginning of our sojourn on Earth. The term vegetarian was not coined until the 1800s, and the term vegan not until 1944.Before these words were invented and popularized, a vegetarian diet was referred to as the "vegetable diet," or the "Pythagorean diet," after the preeminent Greek philosopher Pythagoras. Generally, the further back in time, the less certain it is whether a particular historical figure was vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, or vegan. For the purpose of this show, we will use the term vegetarian to represent all these different types of vegetarianism where there is no certainty.

Some fruitarians will eat only what falls naturally from a plant, and fruits, nuts and seeds that can be harvested without killing or harming the plant. Others prefer not to eat seeds as they contain future plants. While others believe they should only consume plants able to produce seeds for propagation.
