The Stanford Inn by the Sea's Victory Gardens for Peace: Model Vegan Organic Farming, Part 2 of 2

The Victory Gardens for Peace, a mini-farm located at the Stanford Inn by the Sea resort, California, USA, is a small-scale vegan organic farm that is a joint project between the resort and Ecology Action, an environmental non-profit organization. This mini-farm demonstrates the concept of biointensive agriculture. Matt Drewno, the Victory Gardens for Peace’s manager, and an Advanced Level Biointensive Farmer Teacher, will expand on the eight key principles of “Grow Biointensive Sustainable Mini-Farming.” The system now enjoys widespread practice and has been used in over 130 countries, and almost every climate and soil type.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): A Health and Environmental Hazard, Part 1 of 2

With enormous influence from the biotech and the agribusiness companies, the administration at that time approved GMOs, even though they had very little evidence to determine whether they were safe or unsafe. And now there is accumulating evidence about possible health impacts of GMOs. I think some of the concerns that are being raised are essentially the way that the microbiota in the gut interacts with genetically engineered foods, and the possible allergic reactions of people who might be allergic to the thing, which is the gene that's introduced from one organism into another.

Treasured Oceans: What We Can Do to End Fish Depletion and Coral Bleaching, Part 2 of 2

Coral reefs are the Earth's most biodiverse and productive ecosystems. Coral reefs also provide natural protection from sea waves and hurricanes. Despite their importance, coral reefs are declining at an unprecedented rate. Explore the actions needed to save the corals, and ultimately, the oceans. Supreme Master Ching Hai warned: “There are many factors that affect coral reefs, global warming is the greatest threat.” The fastest way to end the root cause of global warming is an organic plant-based diet.

Singapore's Earth Fest: An Eco message for a Sustainable Planet

Singapore’s EarthFest is an annual festival whose mission is to encourage people to chose more sustainable daily living habits, including a plant-based lifestyle, zero waste living, minimalism, and a greater connection with nature. The festival has been organized by the founder Mr. Micheal Broadhead and a group of volunteers. Mr. Broadhead believes the adoption of a plant-based lifestyle is the most powerful way for “going green” and protecting our environment, every major environmental problem we have now is very deeply connected to how people are eating and very deeply connected to animal agriculture because of its inefficiencies.

Consequences of Global Warming, Part 1 of 2

Our home, the beautiful planet earth, functions like a giant living organism made of many interrelated components. These components are constantly interacting to bring a harmonious balance to earth’s ecosystem, atmosphere, and weather-they function in unison to support all life on the planet. Sadly, planet earth is undergoing drastic changes and rapidly heating up. Greenhouse gas emissions are altering the climate drastically, threatening all life on earth. These emissions, namely carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, trap heat in the atmosphere and cause our planet to get warmer.

The Ethics and Climate Change Relationship: An Interview with Dr. Jeff Sebo, Part 1 of 2

Historically, we have dominated and exploited other animals and nature for our own benefit, and that has come from a sense that we are more important than anything else on this planet. We belong here and everything else belongs here for our benefit. That ideology, that narrative does have to change. We have to learn how to gracefully coexist with other animals and with natural systems in a sustainable way, and that will have to involve pretty dramatic changes to the way that we live.

Climate Change, a “Code Red” Global Emergency - Part 1 of 3

A paper published in 2012 by 22 scientists started off by saying, “Humans now dominate the Earth changing it in ways that threaten its abilities to sustain us and other species.” 22 scientists! Very impressive. I think that from what I’m seeing, we could say that Mother Earth is facing a real risk of death now. And we need to put her into intensive emergency care, just like any doctor or nurse would for any critical patient. She is very sick. And her emergency first responders, the paramedics in this analogy, could be each and every one of the seven billion people on the planet.

The United Nations framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international treaty for stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, so as to prevent a drastic disruption in the climate system of our planet. Climate Alliance of European Cities is an extensive group of municipalities that collaborate with indigenous people in safeguarding the world’s climate. City Cycling, the objective of the initiative is to encourage cycling and foster climate protection. City Cycling encourages citizens to use bicycles to meet their everyday transport needs.

Consequences of Global Warming, Part 2 of 2

Animal agriculture is putting a lot of stress on the planet’s ecosystem, they are known to emit large amounts of greenhouse gases that heats up the planet, causing bizarre weather patterns. As more and more heat-trapping gases are emitted into the atmosphere, the Earth gets warmer and as a result, the warming effect causes changes that make our weather pattern more life-threatening. Apart from extreme heatwaves, natural disasters like floods and hurricanes have become ever more frequent. Planet earth is in danger. We must do all we can to restore the ecological balance of our home.

The Adventurous Mr. Rob Greenfield - Living Earth-Friendly, Part 3 of 3

The first step that someone can take to living a simpler life. I think the first step is a step that feels right to you. Something that you feel like you can do right now. And for each person that could be totally different. For some people, maybe they feel like they could move to a more plant-based diet tomorrow and it would feel great and it would feel right. For some people maybe they feel like they could start their bike more. Some people feel like, they could fund a local organization. Maybe they have a lot of extra money and they could fund a local organization that can feed tens of thousands of people.

Climate Change: Consequences and Cures

DR. Peter Wadhams, Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics at Cambridge University and a world authority on polar sea ice research. We are building up a steadily growing effect on our climate, it’s really causing very, very serious problems for mankind. So, it’s an emergency. Something has to be done. And we can’t carry on living the way that we are living. DR. Wadhams, remains hopeful. He believes that we can mitigate global warming through changes in our energy use and diet. Reducing the use of animal food and increasing the use of vegetable food is a good thing for the climate.

MA program will be one of the first graduate programs in animal studies in the world. I hope that they can take away an appreciation for why animals and the environment matter. I think that a lot of people, when they think about this type of information can have a tendency to either be overly optimistic or overly pessimistic. And I think the reality is that there are opportunities to make the world a better place and mitigate some of these harms. I spend a lot of time working, but I also like doing fun creative projects improv comedy and hip hop.

Sustainable Cocoa: A Global Effort, Part 2 of 2

As chocolate becomes ever more popular, the demand for cocoa will continue to rise. And in order to produce more cocoa without causing environmental damage such as deforestation and soil degradation, cocoa farmers need to adopt more sustainable agricultural method. A research team from Zurich’s Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) has found solutions to some of these problems. In the next part of the show, we’ll examine a serious issue surrounding cocoa production - child labor. The chocolate value chain is unevenly distributed. Most cocoa farmers do not receive a fair share of this money. As consumers, we can help end this practice by purchasing Fair Trade certified products.

For Africa, as it is the second most populous continent in the world. And, despite being the world's second largest continent, there are vast areas of land that cannot be used for agriculture. With an increase in climate change-related effects, Thus, soil management is a serious issue for Africa's food security. The good news is that, in several parts of Africa, farmers have started sustainably managing their agricultural soils to improve food production.
