It is generally believed that on this day in 571 BC, the great Sage Lao Tzu was born in Li Village, Ku County, in the State of Chu from the East Zhou Dynasty. This is now the location of the Tai Qing Gong Taoist Temple, which is situated in Luyi County in Henan Province. “Shiji” documents that Lao Tzu’s surname is Li, Erh is the given name, and Dan is the style name. “Lao” could either be Lao Tzu’s surname or an honorific name in respect of His great virtue and longevity, and “Tzu” means a man of reverence or Master.
