Planting Benevolent Seeds in Children’s Hearts – Nepal’s Shree Lho Basic School, Part 2 of 2

Today, we continue to discover additional attributes of this institution and the great works of the teachers who look after youngsters. The Reverend Sonam Chhiling Lama shared with us the importance of daily prayers in student life. “We always do our morning prayers and worship. The main purpose of morning prayers and rites is to make our students wiser and to pay attention to the righteous teachings that guide us.” One joyful result of the school’s establishment is that it has brought local villages closer together. “We sometimes organize community service events. During these events, some people come from the upper hills, while some from the lower villages and they gather together and peacefully socialize during these programs, and cooperate with each other. This is how this school has contributed to our community.” Currently, the Shree Lho Basic School teaches through the 7th grade. However, it will soon expand and eventually serve students through the 10th grade.

Planting Benevolent Seeds in Children’s Hearts – Nepal’s Shree Lho Basic School, Part 1 of 2

The Reverend Acharya Sonam Dorje Rinpoche built the Shree Lho Basic School to take care of orphans as well as underprivileged and marginalized children by providing food and board while they receive an education. He also wished to incorporate the fundamental teachings of Buddhism into the courses so the children could receive moral guidance through this ancient wisdom to cultivate love and compassion. As it is a spiritual boarding school, teachers play an influential role in making Buddhism’s teachings close to the children’s hearts, along with providing attentive care to them and encouraging healthy lifestyle habits. "This is a very rural area, here almost 80-90% of the local population is uneducated. As these people here have their own hardships, and didn’t get a chance to be educated in their time. They wish to have hope for their coming generations to get a good education and do better in life." "The people residing in this school, located in a Buddhist area, do not slaughter animals for food, and hence everybody eats vegetarian food in this school. Conservation of animals, such as these is also emphasized in the books."

Master Ayub’s Park School: Change Starts from Within

In Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad, there is a unique school where disadvantaged students attend classes while sitting on the ground in a park. This is an open-air place of learning established by Master Ayub. Today, the open-air classroom has grown into an institution with more than 250 students. The school has the motto “Change Starts from Within.” Master Ayub believes that youngsters should not be forced to drop out of school to work. He is also concerned that street children can fall under bad influences and be led astray. His classes fill a need for those children who have no opportunity to attend school otherwise. In addition, the educator feels that we should give aid without expecting or wanting anything in return. He received a civil honor called the Pride of Performance Award from the government of Pakistan to acknowledge his extraordinary public service and contributions to education.

Hillside Animal Sanctuary: A Countryside Paradise

Hillside Animal Sanctuary: A Countryside Paradise

In 1995, Wendy Valentine established the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Frettenham, Norwich, UK, after seeing the enormous suffering of egg-laying hens in the poultry industry. From the beginning, Ms. Valentine has campaigned against factory farms and done her utmost to help the victims of their heartless operations. In addition to rescuing animals, she works to raise awareness of the constant agony of the animals on the farms. Her selfless love and concern for animals was already well known. Hillside’s growth over the years was made possible by the generosity of a sympathetic public. We have good hearts and instinctively know how to treat animals with love and respect. When this translates into adopting a vegan diet, we benefit our animal co-inhabitants, ourselves, and the whole planet.

Katie and other FFAC members have made 2,000-plus presentations, which are free of charge and last for about 45 minutes. Over the years, the non-profit has reached over 111,000 people. FFAC wants to help create an informed consumer who will demand plant-based products because they have a basic understanding of where food comes from and highly value a sustainable food system.

On the RASTA website, you can find a blog that covers topics ranging from how to start an animal sanctuary to veganism. “I would love to see a day when animals are not used for their body parts and that we could just live in harmony with other species on this planet, and stop destroying our planet and the animals, and human health also. For almost 20 years, RASTA has taken beings of all shapes and sizes who need a home. If you ever visit this place of love, you get more than just a chance to meet the cute denizens. The kind volunteers also provide all visitors with a 30-minute presentation on the sanctuary and veganism. “Because in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter how much land or how much money you have, you can’t rescue them all but you can make a much larger impact by educating people about veganism and about, just making kinder choices in life and things like that.”

Winchester Lemen: Robust Reuse of Plastic Refuse

Mr. Winchester Lemen has a vision for the plastic we may use just once and then dump. This innovator has created adorable and sturdy chairs, school desks, and tables out of plastic refuse. For 6 years, he worked on developing a way to make a product out of soft plastics, particularly plastic wrappers, such as detergent and shampoo sachets. This material always ended up in landfills as no one else in the recycling industry wanted it. Not only did Mr. Lemen succeed, what he perfected is considered a major step forward in plastic recycling technology.

Monty Roberts – Trust-Based Horse Trainer, Part 3 of 4 (INT)

The other thing I would like to say about gaining trust is that no matter what you do, or learn to do with your anatomy, when you strike, when you cause pain, in any way to that animal, you’re breaking that trust. They were racing horses with whips. And the horse actually runs slower when the are whipped. And if you think about it, if you took the Olympic foot runner, human, and whipped him, you would take his mind off of his job of running, and he would run slower. Why can’t we figure that out? If we can just try to give the horse those things that encourage them to go.

Today, we will see how Mr. Roberts approaches a horse that he has never previously trained. The moment he calls “Join-Up” is a wonder, with the horse voluntarily choosing Mr. Roberts as his or her leader and companion. Mr. Roberts has used his Join-Up techniques successfully with thousands of horses. Join-Up is also humane, unlike the traditional method of “breaking” horses to the rider’s will, and a much faster way to gain a horse’s cooperation by comparison.

And in this business of training horses, which I am a professional at, and have won 11 world championships training horses. But, what I inherited was a world whereby demand was made from the horse. That a good trainer can make a horse do whatever he wants him to. But the great trainer can cause the horse to want to do it. And if the teachers in school thought that way, and a lot of them do, or if the bosses of corporations thought that way, and a lot of them do, they would have a better corporation and a better school. If a student is doing their work because they want to, they will do a better job. And the same thing down on the assembly line of a factory.

Brave Protector of Marine Life: Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Part 3 of 3 (INT)

Back in 1979, if you said the word “vegan,” nobody even knew what you were talking about - from the planet Vega or something. Nobody knew what you were talking about. So, now, that’s pretty much universal. And the amazing thing about veganism is the incredible surge, about a 600% increase in the last couple of years in people choosing veganism as an alternative. And I think that’s going to grow because one of the things I’ve discovered over the years from social movements is that it doesn’t take a majority to carry out anything.

Brave Protector of Marine Life: Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Part 2 of 3 (INT)

And now, it’s been proven that it is probably one of the most significant threats to the survival of life in the sea. If anybody eats fish, they are eating plastic. Microplastic is now in fish; it’s in meat; it’s in the soil; it’s everywhere. And it’s a non-biodegradable substance, but the problem is that also it attracts things like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and other chemicals to it, almost like a magnet. And so, it’s a way for people when they’re eating fish, they eat plastic, they also eat PCBs and other chemicals in that form. I think it’s one of the most insidious threats right now to the survival of all life in the ocean. And of course, that means to all life on the planet.

Sea Shepherd was created in 1977, and its mission is “to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.” The organization sets itself apart from many other of our animal protection entities as its fleet of 15 ships uses innovative direct-action methods to provide security to endangered animals. Sea shepherd has chapters all over the world, and these are volunteers who, in their own communities, come together and are a support base for the operation of the ships and the campaigns.

“Dogs are able to recognize our good heart.” “Dogs think similarly to us; they differ only because they cannot speak.” “Dogs give people a sense of responsibility, happiness, and the fact that they are sensitive.” It shows me that there is nothing else but to raise kids’ awareness and to enjoy this world, to enjoy joy and love. Tom’s focus is on instilling a deep sensitivity in Polish youth for the feelings and needs of all living beings. Change the next generation so that we can have a better life on earth.

I came from Poland. I am an animal lover, teacher and writer. I save animals, and I believe that - thanks to these actions we are all taking with regard to animals and saving them - the suffering will come to an end and we’ll do many important things. I’ve written 10 books for children, a few novels, poems included, and two fairy tales. The book “Dog’s Worries” became a sensation in Poland. It won a Ministry of National Education contest as the best schoolbook and it has become a main schoolbook, meaning a compulsory book for children ages 8 to 12. "To change the next generation so that children will be sensitive all their lives and that they will love every living thing with an open heart."
