Earth-Saving Stone Paper with Zero Waste, Part 1 of 2

Can you imagine a paper made of stone instead of trees? Stone paper is made of stone particles and non-toxic resin. It produces zero waste and requires no water during its production, and has a much smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional tree-based papers. Stone paper was firstly launched to the market in 2008. Currently, stone paper accounts for 1% of all paper sales globally. When compared with regular pulp paper, stone paper is superior in several ways. For example, it is completely waterproof and has higher resistance to tearing.

Biomimicry: Nature-inspired Solutions for a Green Future, Part 2 of 2

In this program, We will explore efficient wind turbines, inspired by the wings of the elegant Hummingbird, or the fins of the mighty yet streamlined humpback whale. Then on to water harvesting, using techniques influenced by spider webs, cacti and fungi. This water harvesting system mimics the way natural systems capture, store and distribute water, and won the research team the prestigious Ray of Hope Prize in the 2017 Biomimicry Global Design challenge along with the bonus.

Desalination: A Solution to Freshwater Shortage, Part 2 of 2

Can we economically convert our abundant salt water on the earth into fresh water? Yes, we can! On today’s show we’ll introduce more innovations in seawater and brackish water desalination. One of them is “Pervaporation”. It is a cheaper, simpler, and potentially cleaner way to turn seawater into drinking water as compared to conventional methods.

Tidal Power: Clean Energy Solutions from Earth’s Oceans

The ocean holds a vast potential for harnessing inexpensive, clean, and sustainable energy. In this program, we interviewed Dr. Martin Visbeck, Professor of Physical Oceanography, GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research, one of the world’s leading marine science institutes. Professor Visbeck presented five approaches to generating energy from the ocean; namely, the use of ocean waves, ocean elevations, ocean currents and swells, variations in cold and warm ocean temperatures, and salinity gradients between freshwater and ocean water.

Transcending the Limits of Microchip Fabrication: Extreme UV Lithography, Part 1 of 2

The development of mobile phones has brought great convenience to users. How can such a small device have so many functions? The answer lies in its sophisticated “brain” — a whole collection of microchips. Inside a chip are a large number of densely packed circuit elements, which can contain billions of transistors. The size of each transistor is approximately one thousandth to ten-thousandth of a hair’s breadth. How are these circuits made? The answer is through “microlithography.” On today’s show we’ll introduce the advanced next-generation lithography technology—Extreme UV Lithography.
