History of the Heavenly Harp, Part 1 of 2

History of the Heavenly Harp, Part 1 of 2

Music is all around us. It exists in the melody of a bird’s happy song, or the sound of the bubbling river. These outer worldly sounds contain more than just a sound wave; they also connect us to our inner core. The harp is one of the most beautiful instruments that humankind has ever imagined. One might describe its sound as Heaven’s music, played by angels. In the Holy Bible, chapter 14 of the Book of Revelations mentions the harp sound. It says: “and I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps.”

Extraordinary Musical Masterworks of the 20th Century, Part 2 of 2

This is the tenth and final sonata of the visionary Russian composer and spiritual practitioner Alexander Scriabin. The sonata contains flashes of light which the composer describes as "powerful, radiating". One of the most wondrously gifted composers of the 20th century was the French composer Maurice Ravel. In his incredible piano suite Gaspard de la Nuit, Ravel stretches sonorities to raise a new world of tantalizing aural riches which cannot but propel consciousness into realms unchartered. Let's share the wonder of the first work in the suite, entitled "Ondine."

#365 Unpacked – Interview with Photographer Antoine Repessé, Part 2 of 2

Ultimately, the solution is simple. Our parents or grandparents weren’t buying all these products, and they lived a much simpler life, which was in tune with seasons, with the environment. And that’s what we need to get back to if we want to try to preserve a little bit of our resources. Beyond the question of recycling, there is also the cost of energy that must be used. It is up to us as consumers to make choices that are responsible, by focusing on buying products that are more environmentally friendly. This message of conservation and the urgent need to act for the preservation of our planet has been echoed time and again by Supreme Master Ching Hai.

Unpacked – Interview with Photographer Antoine Repessé, Part 1 of 2

Antoine has received much acclaim for his four-year project entitled “#365 Unpacked,” a series of photographic masterpieces featuring recyclable waste. In this series of photographs, he presents to us the 365 kilograms of waste that we, on average, individually produce over the course of a year. Actually, we can’t picture it. The strength of this project is to bring this issue down to a much smaller scale. To allow people to understand it, “Oh yes, indeed, I too contribute in spite of myself, to this massive production of packaging and waste.” Do we really have to generate all that quantity?

Extraordinary Musical Masterworks of the 20th Century, Part 1 of 2

First, let's start with a snippet from the exceptionally gifted Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto. We can feel humor, warmth, passion, sincerity and excitement even in these few short minutes. In this next masterwork, the third movement of the third piano sonata by Alexander Scriabin, we hear the fragile beauty and delightful effervescence of created form. For our final 20th century masterwork, we turn to the prominent Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, Béla Bartók. Marked as "Adagio Religioso," this is the only work in all of Bartók's creative output with a directly spiritual reference.

King Lý Thánh Tông – The Compassionate Emperor – Part 2 of 3

In all the King’s policies, the peace and happiness of the citizens came first. During the period of poor harvest resulting in the loss of crops, the King would exempt taxes and even open the royal storehouse to distribute rice, money and fabrics to the needy. The reason the King deeply emphathized with the citizens was that while as a crown prince, He was asked by His king father, to stay in the Long palace in the suburb so that he could live close to the people. Therefore, He understood very well their hard life and difficulties.

In Gratitude to Mothers’ Boundless Love, Part 3 of 4

If you can, you turn on the machine to wash your clothes yourself. And you can clean the floor, help her to wash dishes, tidy up the house. Don’t throw socks and hats everywhere. Even if she goes out to work outside the house, when she comes home, she still needs to do a lot of work at home. Because the more you grow up, the older and more tired the mother becomes with the years. The stronger you grow, the weaker Mom becomes, so try to think about her feelings, her physical condition and give a lot, a lot of love to the mother, and father of course.

In Gratitude to Mothers’ Boundless Love, Part 2 of 4

Those who still have mothers are the luckiest people. When I met my parents the first time in many decades in Hong Kong, I felt like I’m a kid. I feel like so free, you know what I mean? Feel like you don’t have to feel responsible for anything. If you say something wrong, it’s OK. If you don’t do your job well today, that’s OK. You feel young again, like spoiled children again, and it was a very, very beautiful feeling. If you have your parents still and you still can stay with them, I suggest you stay with them as long as you can, because it is a blessing to stay with parents.

I thank all the mothers everywhere in the world and in the universes, for giving a chance for the enlightened Masters to come to our world and other worlds to enlighten us, to bless the planets, and to bring happiness, improvement, better atmosphere, good changes for all beings to benefit. Mothers are the hardest workers of all the workers, especially if she has children under ten, then she works like 24/7. Motherhood or housekeeper, housewife, housewife are the most occupied jobs in the world, right? But mostly it’s the most unthankful job.

Traditonal Musical Instrument: Enchanting Mandolin, Part 2 of 2

Traditonal Musical Instrument: Enchanting Mandolin, Part 2 of 2

The exquisite sounds of the mandolin resonate back over a millennium, with recorded instances of mandolin music from the Medieval period (500-1400AD), up to the Renaissance (1400-1600), through the Baroque period (1600-1740AD) and onwards, to our current era. In Medieval times, the lute, a precursor to the modern mandolin, was widely played and appreciated. One branch of its evolution was the mandore, which arose in the Renaissance period and in turn, during the Baroque period, brought forth what we now call the mandolin.

Traditonal Musical Instrument: Enchanting Mandolin, Part 1 of 2

Although there are many variations, the mandolin generally has a hollow wooden body that includes a soundboard with a teardrop shape. Today, the mandolin plays a vital role in both orchestral and bluegrass music. As Mr. Nigel Woodhouse, a professional mandolinist who has played with many world-renowned orchestras and ensembles, explains: “… the mandolin has two of each string; they’re close pairs intended to be played as one string. It’s the doubling of the strings which gives the mandolin its particular resonance and sustain.”

Mr. Won has continued to facilitate dialogue in Korea, with support from embassies, country leaders, and influential musicians. Lindenbaum Festival started as bringing peace through music, especially orchestral music, because of the power of the orchestra. Language has its limits. Then there is music. So, I hope we teach ways to communicate with music. So, I think the musician’s role here is very important. And I hope the unification of North and South will come true through music.
