Buddhist Chant Remix with the Venerable Yogetsu Akasaka

In Buddhist tradition, chanting often serves as a means to prepare one’s mind for holy communion, meditation, or for certain sacred rituals and ceremonies. In Japan, it is typically accompanied by three types of musical instruments: the mokugyo, the keisu and the taiko. Without using any of these traditional instruments, 37-year-old Japanese Zen Buddhist monk, the venerable Yogetsu Akasaka, is cre

An Elevating Christmas Celebration 2019, Part 6 of 6

Though I know it's all illusion, but for everyone else, it's not an illusion. I know you’re doing that every day, even though you’re busy, even though the world is binding you and dragging you down, and taking up every ounce of your strength and your time, you're still doing your best, you're still trying hard to help whenever wherever you can, in whichever aspect you can. And I want to really thank you and may Lord Jesus, may the Most High grant you all the best wishes, all the noble endeavors, and help you in your struggle in this world to stay awake, to rise up above the shackles of the illusionary prison. And I wish you well. I wish you the best. I wish you all the graces from God and from all the Saints and Sages, past, present, and future. Our world is changing, and all due to everyone also. Because of them, because of you, the world is getting better. And it will be paradise one day for your children to inherit, and that’s the right thing to do. I wish also all these groups, these organizations, these people, individuals who are sincerely and compassionately fighting for the weaker and less fortunate, such as the helpless, innocent animals, I do wish them also all the best. I wish all God’s graces on them. And you are my hands, my feet, my ears, my eyes, my extended beings. You think, you organize, you travel, you go long distances, sleepless or tired, but you continue to help others. So, I’m very happy with you and I thank you for going through everything with me over the years: going through karma, going through trial and tested, failing exams or not failing the exam in spiritual practice. And you still hang around, sticking in there. Just in case the karma sometimes drags me down, you stay faithful. You stay intact. Because no one, even the highest Saints, can be in this world without having to share the karma of the world.

With fast and delightful rhythms and lively moves, the dance makes people feel cheerful." “Wow, so high-heeled and still can dance so fast. We women are so fantastic. I like everything.” "The Sound vibration from the Universe rings blessings and the Light throughout the Universe radiates warmth. We thank the great and merciful Master for turning the Earth into a vegan and peaceful planet with unlimited sacrifice and Love. Thank the Lord. Hallelujah." "O Master, You are the grace and gift bestowed on the world by God. You exemplify the unconditional Love and selfless devotion. You teach us to understand the true meaning of Christmas, which is to follow the spirit of Jesus Christ, to learn to share, to offer selflessly, to love others and all our animal friends." "During this warm season, in addition to caring for our friends and relatives afar, we also care for the less advantaged people and those who suffer. We care for all animal friends and hope that they and all people can be free, happy and respected to live on this beautiful planet together. We pray that the next Christmas, all humans on the five continents and all the animal co-inhabitants can spend the holiday in peace, beauty and happiness." "Now, our Association members from Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, will perform traditional dances of the Bataknese." “Beautiful! Wow! Beautiful! (Master, I love You.) Love you too. This mantra, everybody says that every day. ‘I love you. I love you.’ The best mantra in the world. Everything from Indonesia is beautiful. God bless Indonesia. Beautiful people. If Master’s not here, how would you know all these kinds of beautiful people, right? (Yes.) Have to thank me, no? Beautiful, right? Yes. And you have a chance also to show your tradition, but you don’t do anything, you just sit there. Next time come up, OK? OK. It’s Christmas, we forgive you.”

Celebrating the 250th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, Part 3 of 3

Celebrating the 250th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, Part 3 of 3

Right after the completion of his fifth and sixth symphonies and fourth piano concerto, Beethoven started to work on his Piano concerto No. 5 in E-flat major Opus.73, commonly known as the Emperor Concerto, for its grandiose power and majestic melodies. In his late period, from 1815 to 1827, Beethoven revisited classical works by Baroque masters J. S. Bach and Handel and experimented in liturgical music, adding romantic flares to his compositions. His works from this period are greatly hailed for their new level of depth, expression and innovation, which includes his last five piano sonatas, last two sonatas for cello and piano, the thirty-three Diabelli Variations, and two titanic works: Missa Solemnis and the Ninth Symphony. Missa Solemnis was not only a dedication to his beloved friend, but also Beethoven’s sincere offering to God, glorifying his Divinity. The Mass is considered one of Beethoven’s definitive life works, and an astounding achievement. Influences from working on the Mass were evident, as he incorporated vocals into the symphony, something never seen before. Beethoven completed Symphony No. 9 in 1824 and it premiered in Vienna on May 7 that year with the largest orchestra he had ever assembled, including many famous young singers. After enduring years of severe illnesses, Ludwig van Beethoven passed away on March 26, 1827, amidst a thunderstorm. Romain Rolland, a French author and art historian wrote in his book Beethoven, “He is the most heroic soul in modern art. He is the grandest and the best friend of those who suffer and struggle.” He remains our immortal beloved and his music will resound through countless future generations.

Vegan Indian Drum Maker: Dr. K. Varadarangan

00:15:06

Vegan Indian Drum Maker: Dr. K. Varadarangan

"My name is Dr. K. Varadarangan. I reside in Bengaluru, India. On the music front, I have been learning music since a very young age and I’ve been a performer of Carnatic music. We turned vegan; that is, me and my wife both turned vegan in 2010, March, on our wedding anniversary day, after I came to know about the horrific practices of dairy, abusing the animals, the cows. So, in 2010, when I became vegan, I became very sensitive about items I used to use for daily use. And, of course, we eliminated all the non-vegan items from our lifestyle. But one thing that still remained was this percussion instrument called the mridangam. In fact, the mridangam is made of three animal skins - goat, cow, and buffalo. And I also came to know that cows are specifically slaughtered to make instrument, and I felt very depressed and sad. So the first idea was to give up performing on stage, so that I would not be part of this crime. But then an inner voice told me that's not enough, that if I quit performing, no big change. So I wanted to bring about a change that could even possibly help others, so I started thinking, ‘Why can't I invent a new instrument without leather, without animal skin and probably also wood?’ So I wanted to use an alternative material. I thought of fiberglass as a shell material but I didn't know how to make a head out of non-animal products. But then after a lot of research, many, many failures, months of failures, and completely sleepless nights, somehow I wanted to do it. I know the only thing that guided me was the passion to save animals from slaughter, because music is, everybody agrees it is divine and our Indian music particularly, which is very spiritual and divine in nature. We talk about only about these themes in our music, about spirituality, about divinity. And using the traditional instrument would be going against that very principle, so I decided to invent a synthetic head. So now I have been successful in making this instrument with a synthetic black spot which is Syahi. And also the membrane is now a polyester film. Dr. Varadarangan’s vegan drums are not only ethical, but also have many advantages over the traditional type. They are light in weight, user friendly and durable. Their pitch does not vary with temperature. What’s more, they allow musicians to tune them precisely. It’s no wonder that these vegan drums have been in high demand.

Celebrating the 250th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, Part 2 of 3

00:16:37

Celebrating the 250th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, Part 2 of 3

In our last episode we learned about Beethoven’s childhood, early youth and young adulthood events that lead to his first compositional style period with musical works greatly influenced by Haydn and Mozart. Today we retrace history back to Beethoven’s middle period, commonly accepted as the end of 1802 to 1815, when his musical genius began to mature and evolve. Many of Beethoven’s well-known large scale works come from these productive years, including six symphonies from the Third to Eighth, his only opera, “Fidelio,” his only violin concerto, the last two piano concertos, a few overtures, some chamber music pieces such as string quartets Nos. 7-11, and seven piano sonatas. In this middle period, Beethoven goes beyond the normal conventions of classicism and begins to add human elements into his music; the struggles, the triumphs, and the joy. Sometimes people call this stage in life Beethoven’s “Heroic” period. As early as 1797 or 1798, Beethoven started to experience the loss of hearing. Dependant on intricate sounds, this was a tragic dark cloud that enshrouded the great composer. Beethoven courageously wrestled with his cruel fate with a mighty strength of will to fulfil his musical purpose. He composed the Tempest sonata and sketched the inspirations for his Third Symphony while living in Heiligenstadt. In the autumn of 1802, Beethoven returned to Vienna with inspiration for a “new path” to pursue. This marked the beginning of his change in style, to infuse music with more depth of emotion, earnest expressions, and originality. In a letter to his friend Dr. Franz Wegeler in 1801, Beethoven declared that he would not let deafness defeat him, challenging his fate he wrote, “It shall certainly not bend and crush me completely.” His Fifth Symphony is a manifestation of his fearless courage and mighty determination. From the first note to the last, the inspiring power and emotional intensity of the piece speaks of Beethoven’s struggles and celebrates his triumph.

Celebrating the 250th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, Part 1 of 3

December 16, 2020 marks the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest music composers in the history of our world. Across the globe, concerts and events are being planned to commemorate the birth of this musical genius. Beethoven continued the Classical legacies of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and evolved music into a new era of Romanticism, characterized by dramatic melodies that evoked powerful emotions. He expanded musical composition from a formal aesthetic style to allow freer individual expression of feelings and ideas. Some of his musical innovations waited for almost a century before finding composers who could truly comprehend and apply them to their own compositions. Triumphing over physical suffering and countless hardships in life, Beethoven imbues his music with joy and expressive freedom as if to celebrate the resolve and immense strength of the human spirit. Beethoven’s rare musical talent was revealed at a young age. Beethoven first performed publicly on March 26, 1778 when he was seven years old. On March 29, 1795, Beethoven gave his first public performance in Vienna, premiering his Piano Concerto No. 1. Beethoven grew to be a fully accomplished composer after establishing himself as the finest piano virtuoso in Vienna. During this period, an extraordinary surge of creativity produced a large body of works, including his first and second symphonies, his first three piano concertos, and his first twenty piano sonatas, including the famous “Pathetique” and “Moonlight,” as well as nine of his ten violin sonatas with piano, the most popular being “Spring” and “Kreutzer,” plus many other piano pieces, chamber music works, and songs. We’ll now conclude this episode with some joyful notes from Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Opus 24, commonly known as the “Spring Sonata,” which was completed in 1801 and dedicated to the Austria nobleman, banker and patron of the arts, Count Moritz von Fries. The “Spring Sonata” is one of Beethoven’s happiest creations during the springtime of his life, a sublime taste of beauty, innocence, and clarity.

They're always about empowerment. They're always about peace and betterment for all; even when I'm not trying that's what comes through me. So those are the songs I would say that I am drawn to create.”“My vision is that hopefully they will land on commercials and TV so it can reach so many other people, that I’m writing in different styles. I am writing and singing in hip hop, I'm rapping now so that's exciting for me, but it is always with that heart of love, and about that empowering, inspiring message.”“I was honored with this Grace Note Award for the work of my music supporting many of the New Thought centers around the planet. New Thought includes unity, centers for spiritual living.” “My wish for the world is really, it's what I say in that song Rise, that ... we say ‘yes,’ that everyone can say ‘yes’ to that calling of their hearts, to just really listen and say ‘yes’ to that call and that with grace and ease and fun, we can each just step to that next level that we're being called to because the world is asking us for that.““I just have to thank Supreme Master for that inspiration, of what it looks like to do that.” “It just means the world to know that You, Supreme Master, You value my music, so I'm going to continue on. Your inspiration and Your physical support of my music in the world, I just have to thank You.”“My parting message would be that your voice matters. A Gentle Stroll in the Classical Garden with Frédéric Chopin, Part 2 of 2

A Gentle Stroll in the Classical Garden with Frédéric Chopin, Part 2 of 2

Frédéric Chopin was one of the most original, gifted, and uplifting artists of the 19th century. He mesmerized audiences with his technically astounding yet poetically expressive performances. In his short lifetime, he gave only 30 large public concerts, preferring his intimate, glorious music to be played in smaller gatherings, such as in the salons of Paris, where he spent the latter years of his life. Let’s now enjoy the third movement of Chopin’s Piano Sonata No.3 in B minor. The sonata was dedicated to Countess Emilie de Perthuis, and is considered to be one of Chopin’s most technically difficult compositions. This third movement is “Largo,” meaning with a slow tempo. It starts with a dotted rhythm moving in a steady pace, before the middle section transforms the mood with a more dream-like texture. Finally, the main theme comes back, with a purling accompaniment in triplets. The piece is performed by the exceptional, award-winning Polish pianist, Mr. Grzegorz Niemczuk. His music not only embodies, but transcends, Romanticism with its poetic, harmonic universally empathic expressions. Let’s listen to the final movement of Chopin’s Piano Sonata No.3 in B minor played by the amazing vegan professional pianist, Dr. Chang Shao-Hsun from Taiwan, also known as Formosa. This piece is infused with vigor and inexplicable coalescence of energies and brilliance, all of which require full strength and technical virtuosity from the pianist. Frédéric Chopin, what a musical gift from God! We thank Dr. Chang Shao-Hsun, Mr. Grzegorz Niemczuk, and all of the other talented musicians for allowing us to enjoy the extraordinary works of Chopin.
