The conventional collagen industry markets the idea that collagen only exists in animal-people derived sources and that youthful skin requires supplements made from animal-people products. However, physicians and nutritionists argue this is a manufactured myth. According to Dr. Michael Greger (vegan) – physician, author, and public health expert – collagen from animal-people sources breaks down into amino acids during digestion – just like any other protein. “And, of all proteins to eat, collagen is the only protein in our food supply that’s truly incomplete. Other dietary proteins, including all plant proteins, contain all of the essential amino acids.” “Those who want to try it are advised to contact the manufactures to clarify its source. Most collagen supplements don’t disclose this information and for good reason. Terrestrial sources can include a witch’s brew of kangaroo and rat tails, duck feet, horse tendons, alligator bones, and frog skin.”

Dr. Michael Klaper (vegan) – physician, author, and internationally recognized plant-based health educator – emphasizes that our bodies are naturally equipped to produce collagen. Mr. Simnett breaks down how key nutrients in plant foods – including amino acids like glycine, lysine, and proline, along with vitamin C – play a vital role in collagen production. “We’re going to get it from sources like nuts, seeds, lentils, legumes with soy, being an especially great source. So, this one you’re going to find in more of the higher protein plant foods –things like quinoa, beans, lentils, of course tofu and tempeh sneak in there, again pumpkin seeds.”
