Altruistic Animals

Today we would like to share with you some amazing stories of animals who turned their selfless concern into loving action for the benefit of others. Let’s start with a cat named Kuu. Cat Assists Dog with Dementia. Cat Saves Baby from Danger. Dog Keeps Lost Child Safe and Warm. Cat Saves Caregiver from Fire. Dog Saves Family from Fire. Let’s now meet a bull calf named Oliver. Bull Calf gives Love to Blind Bison. Just like humans, we animals are beings that have feelings. There are times when each of us needs some support, and these are the opportunities for those close to us to let their nobility shine and give selflessly. I trust you have enjoyed today’s stories and are perhaps even inspired to lend a softer heart and a more generous hand to all of Earth’s inhabitants.

The Wonderful Earth Inhabitants, Part 1 of 2

One of the reasons October 2nd was specifically selected as “World Farm Animals Day” is that it coincides with the birthday of one of the modern era’s greatest practitioners of nonviolence, Mahatma Gandhi - the “Father of India.” Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” and, “I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” As we take this opportunity to contemplate the meaning of World Farm Animals Day, we call on humanity to be aware that all beings should live as equals and be treated with respect.

Animals in the Snow Wonderland

Animals in the Snow Wonderland

Today we will explore incredible winter lands with amazing wild animals. Penguins, the iconic animal of the Antarctic, are well known for their endurance in extreme conditions, with the emperor penguin able to withstand temperatures of -30°C with winds blasting at 200 kilometers per hour. Generally speaking, warm-blooded animals that inhabit cold regions are fairly big. Large animals have a smaller surface to volume ratio and thus relatively less surface area through which to lose heat. The smallest Antarctic penguin, the rockhopper, weighs an average of 2.5 kilograms, and the largest, the emperor penguin, is around 30 kilograms in weight. Male emperor penguins also huddle together in groups of several thousand to survive the biting wind and relentless cold. Scientists have recorded temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius within the huddle. Keep warm guys! Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, truly love the snow, particularly the young ones. They roll about and play in it. The youngsters make snowballs, carry them around, and have fun with them. They even play a game of trying to take each other’s snowballs! These macaques are great leapers and tree climbers, which they take advantage of to move around when there is thick snow. To cope with the icy-cold temperatures, snow leopards are protected by thick gray or creamy yellow hair with grayish-black spots. Their broad feet, which are covered with fur, act as natural snowshoes. They use their long tails as blankets to protect sensitive body parts against the biting mountain chill. These tremendous jumpers can cross up to 15 meters in one leap. The snow leopard is listed as an endangered species, with only about 3,500 to 7,000 left in the wild.It has been my pleasure to show you how we animals adapt to the cold winter with heavy snow. Despite our amazing ability to withstand the freezing temperatures, we would much appreciate it if you would take extra care when walking through our habitats to not disturb us during our most vulnerable time in winter.

“Live Fashion, Walk Compassion” – An Interview with Israeli Fashion Designer Liat Lahav (vegan)

The talented Mrs. Lahav and her family reside in the bustling city of Tel Aviv, Israel. Liat’s transition to a vegan lifestyle was met with the typical challenges of customary habits and beliefs, but in her heart, she knew that a compassionate lifestyle must be led by example. "Well, my name is Liat Lahav. I launched SHANILI from passion for animals, compassion and love, and I called my brand 'Live Fashion, Walk Compassion,' because it’s fashion, first it’s fashion, and everybody loves fashion. And I wanted to show people and not only vegans, all people, that you can buy fashion and beautiful things that doesn’t need to have anything from animals. I’m using different kinds of microfibers. It can be like a suede, and really leather-like, like smooth leather. And until you see it and touch it and wear it, you can’t understand and believe that it’s not leather. It’s exactly the same. And it’s very good material. It’s synthetic. It’s very easy to process it. And it doesn’t damage the Earth, like the leather does. And especially, you can reproduce them because it’s synthetic. So, it’s recycling. So, it’s only a win-win situation. My dream, and this is my vision and my first purpose, is to bring the opportunity for vegans, vegetarians and anybody else who doesn’t want to consume animal products, to bring them the fashion into their lives. I’m all the time announcing that SHANILI is the pioneer for the vegan fashion revolution. And I’m working to get there. And so, I’m asking everybody here in Israel and outside Israel, if you know how you can help me to achieve that, and to bring the vegan fashion to the world, just I’m here. I’m open to hear everything and to make different kinds of collaborations, just to end this suffering from our world." Compassionate Liat Lahav, we thank you for your noble endeavors to bring a Heavenly way of life to God’s children on our precious planet. We wish you growing success and pray others will follow your animal-friendly example to Live Fashion, Walk Compassion.

Ronen Bar (vegan): Bringing Animal Suffering to Light, Part 3 of 3

Today, we hear Ronen speak about kosher foods as well as cultured meat. Kosher means that the product has been certified to meet Jewish dietary laws. Both animal products and animal-free foods can be kosher. “Unfortunately, kosher doesn't mean that there was no animal cruelty. [It’s] the other way around. All the kosher meat sold in Israel is entangled, is connected to animal cruelty.” “The only kosher from a moral perspective is, of course, plant-based food.” “And when I look at all of this effort, endeavor, to help animals, I see two main aspects. The first one is raising consciousness, which will make people give up some of their comfort in order not to hurt animals. So raising consciousness is very important. The other one is technology. Technology will make it much easier for people not to hurt animals. So you don't have to give up so much or change so much in order for you not to hurt animals. And these two efforts, are coming and helping each other and feeding each other.” “I'm the chairperson of the board at the Modern Agriculture Foundation. It's a nonprofit focused on promoting alternative proteins, which means that we don't do the R&D (research and development), the scientific work ourselves. Our job is to make sure others will do it. So we reach out to scientists, to entrepreneurs, to companies, to big food companies and to investors, everybody in the space that can enlarge the effort to make cell-based meat and make plant-based meats commercially viable and cheap and tasty as fast as possible.” “I have to say that from an ethical standpoint, the best thing is just to eat the plain soy and legumes and cereals. The effort to make the cell-based meats, the mimicking of the animal protein meats consumes more resources from the environment. Nevertheless, they're still very good compared to animal-based products.” “I think all of them are really in a totally different category than meat, of course, because they're more environmentally-friendly, or you can say less contributing to animal genocide, and because they don't hurt animals directly, like factory farming is doing.”

Wildlife Conservation Day: A Call for Action

00:14:08
Lumea animalelor- conlocuitorii noştri

Wildlife Conservation Day: A Call for Action

Thousands of our wildlife co-inhabitants are facing a similar fate. Their populations have declined rapidly and many species are in imminent danger of extinction. According to a new report from the conservation group the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a Shining World Compassion Award recipient, human activity has caused the planet to lose two-thirds of its wildlife since 1970. In just over four decades, the global wildlife populations have dropped by an average of 68%. This rapidly decreasing rate is a warning that many wild animals will be extinct by the end of the 21st century. Some of them will disappear from the Earth before scientists even discover them. How can humans help assist with wildlife conservation and rehabilitation and steer us towards a pandemic-free world? I have some suggestions. Please help raise the awareness of how important animals are to the ecosystems through education. Work with local wildlife conservation programs and rehabilitation projects to learn more about endangered species, and how to protect them. Please use recycled and sustainable products, and support eco-friendly and green technologies that guard nature and the Earth. Please buy recycled and tree-free paper, which helps to reduce the felling of woodlands. Also, choose palm oil-free products to avoid forests from being bulldozed to create palm oil plantations, thus permanently displacing native species. Government and nature-focused non-governmental organizations worldwide should become involved in safeguarding all species by monitoring populations, restoring habitats, building more rehabilitation centers, and improving natural ecosystems. Another idea is to enact more pro-animal laws to shield wildlife, such as banning their trading, hunting, and poaching as well as prohibiting their use for amusement or consumption. Please refrain from purchasing souvenirs, shoes, clothing, or any other products made from animals such as ivory, bone, feathers, fur, turtle shell, leather, dried coral, and seashells. Avoid patronizing any events that profit from the use of wildlife, such as animal circuses and captive animal performances. In conclusion, the root solution for the immense, ongoing global destruction of wildlife is that humanity should change its diet to a compassionate plant-based one. A vegan food system not only benefits the health of humans and our planet but also can save our impressive planetary assortment of fauna from extinction. We should work hand in hand to protect our shared biosphere.

Hoatzin: The Enigmatic Bird

Hoatzin: The Enigmatic Bird

We hoatzins live in trees and shrubs among the swamps, tropical riverbanks, and mangroves around the Amazon and Orinoco rivers in South America. We are Guyana’s national bird and are honorably included in Guyana’s Coat of Arms. Interestingly, from an evolutionary standpoint, nobody really knows where we came from! We have an extraordinarily colorful appearance. With an un-feathered blue face and maroon eyes, our small head is topped with a cool, spiky 10-centimeter rufous crest, just like a punk rocker’s mohawk. Therefore, some locals call us “Punk Rock Birds.” Hoatzins are exclusively vegan, and along with the Owl Parrot, we are the only two bird species that primarily eat leaves. We also sometimes eat buds, flowers, and fruits as dessert. Foraging in the early morning and evening, we spend the rest of the day comfortably roosting. We have a very potent odor, and are also known as the stink or skunk bird of the marshes. We have a super-sized crop at the base of our throat to store and digest consumed leaves and fruits. This stinky smell is from the chemicals released during the fermentation process taking place in the crop, where bacteria slowly break down the fibrous leaves for us. The rumination process is just like a cow’s, so some people call us “flying cows.” What’s so special about our chicks? They have claws on their wings! While some other birds, such as chickens, kea parrots, and ostriches also have vestigial claws on their wings, we are the only living bird with functional ones that are important to our survival. These cool and handy wing claws are present and functional only when we are young. They disappear once we reach adulthood. The next time you join an Amazon River cruise, look for our spiky orange Mohawk, and listen for us!

Dolly Vyas-Ahuja (vegan)- A True Voice for Ahimsa, Part 2 of 2

With her endless enthusiasm, Dolly has become friends with virtually everyone on the who’s who list of the animal rights movement in India and the USA. One person she is particularly close to is the renowned author, environmentalist, social justice advocate, and animal activist Dr. Sailesh Rao, a Shining World Award for Earth Protection laureate, who is also one of the key originators of the Internet as we know it today. “He talks about all this methane that is going into the air. He’s also talking about us chopping down the forests. Now, every 10 seconds, the Amazon forest is being chopped down for animal agriculture. So, animal agriculture is the number one reason for ocean dead zones, habitat destruction, environmental devastation, and these things have to change.” Dolly’s activism has taken her around the world. In India, she delivered a rousing speech at the World Vegan Conference in New Delhi in July 2019, about the harmful effects of dairy. “And God, Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Lord Jesus, Lord Buddha is full of compassion and love. They're trying to teach that, do not harm anyone, do not separate a mother and a child. So, I think we really need to understand what God is trying to say. And that is to live with compassion. That should be number one.” Dolly recognizes that dairy consumption is deep-rooted in Indian culture, which is one reason why she is working hard on her documentary film as a way to change the misconceptions in her motherland. “Once people find out the truth of who they really are, which is compassion, they want to change. They start thinking about this deeply. And I think that veganism is such a powerful movement right now, and it's growing so fast, because, if we don't go vegan, we are hurting our planet, and we really need to secure it for our future generations.”

Shining World Compassion Award: Fawaz Kanaan of Save Dubai Stray Cats

Cats are beautiful, sensitive and majestic animals with extraordinary abilities. However, as cats have adapted to becoming human companions, they do not fare well when left to fend for themselves outside. Roaming the streets comes with many dangers, including starvation, exposure to a multitude of diseases, other aggressive animals, etc. The number of stray cats in the Emirates has recently reached a hundred thousand, and in Dubai, tens of thousands. Over the past 20 years, Mr. Fawaz Kanaan has been feeding and rescuing stray cats from the streets of Dubai. Working nights and weekends as an event organizer and a rock DJ frees up time for him to help animals. “The ones that needed to be treated, I bring them to the vet. We treat them, we put them back in the same spot.” Through social media platforms such as Facebook, Mr. Kanaan has raised awareness and helped many cats find loving homes, both locally and internationally, including in Canada, the United States, Russia, Germany, Belgium and the UK. Deeply grateful for his compassionate initiatives, Supreme Master Ching Hai presented Mr. Kanaan the Shining World Compassion Award. "Dear Fawaz, It is with great admiration and gratitude that we present to you the Shining World Compassion Award for saving, then re-locating felines. This Award is presented in recognition of your impressive initiative to rescue stray cats from the streets of Dubai, then re-home them into forever loving homes. Your untiring efforts herald a new era of empathy and harmonious co-existence with our precious animal friends." "May Allah shower you and all involved with all love and blessing. With Great Honor, Love and Blessings in Allah’s Grace Supreme Master Ching Hai." "To Supreme Master Ching Hai, I really want to say a big thank You for this award and for this recognition. I’m honored, to be honest. I hope this message will reach everyone, animal lovers, and non-animal lovers so they will be animal lovers."

Supreme Master Ching Hai (Vegan) on the Harmful Effects of Meat, Part 19 - Against Universal Religious Tenets

Well-versed in many religious teachings and practices, Supreme Master Ching Hai has graciously explained this core principle. “There are Ten Commandments in the Bible. The first one is ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ When we kill any living being, we commit the act of kill. As long as it has life, it counts as killing. It doesn’t say ‘not to kill people’; it says ‘not to kill,’ meaning not to take any life. Similarly, in Buddhism, the first precept is the most important and it is also not to kill.” “And in Buddhism, the law of cause and effect is absolute and exact. Whatever you do to others, it will be done to us in some way or another. Not only Buddhism, Christians say the same, ‘As you sow, so shall you reap.’ And any other religion you look carefully, you will see the law of karma, the cause and effect: whatever you do, it will be done to you. Therefore, Confucius said, ‘Do not do to others what you do not desire for yourself.’ Because He also knew the law of cause and effect - meaning whatever you do, you will get the result, the bad or good.” “Most of the time we study but we do not practice. For example, Christianity, the Bible says ‘Thou shall not kill’ and ‘do not be among the meat eaters and wine drinkers.’ Not be among them even, not to talk about become one of them, like meat eaters. These are very simple things, but I think many of us have overlooked. And the Buddha also taught us to be vegetarian, not to eat any sentient beings at all because they’re all our relatives and friends – meaning we are all interconnected. Hinduism teaches the same, Jainism teaches the same: avoid killing of any manner.” “Obviously, the eating of any kind of animals, sentient beings is absolutely forbidden in all main belief systems and holy teachings. Yet too many of God’s children, or religious believers, are not following these basic guidelines, because we have been led astray by misconceptions that we need to eat the flesh of animals, fish, eggs and milk to be healthy. The opposite is true – it has been proven in scientific and clinical studies that consuming animals causes innumerable diseases in humans, such as cancers, all kinds of cancers and heart diseases, thus early death, and endless sorrow, suffering before that. Our original diet, as per the Garden of Eden, is the vegan diet. It promotes both physical and mental and spiritual wellbeing. We can live happy, healthy lives, thriving purely on plant foods.”

Dolly Vyas-Ahuja (vegan) - A True Voice for Ahimsa, Part 1 of 2

Today, we are privileged to feature a charismatic lady, Dolly Vyas-Ahuja, whose powerful example of unconditional love and tireless work for our precious animal friends in the last five years are worthy of our high esteem and accolades. Dolly moved with her family to the USA as a one-year-old. Although her family had traditionally been vegetarian, she was allowed to adopt a non-vegetarian diet. One day in April 2014, however, she came across a speech online known as “The Greatest Speech Ever” by renowned animal freedom fighter Gary Yourofsky. She was so shocked by the graphic depictions of what occurs behind closed doors on the factory farms of the world that she had an emotional breakdown that night, turning vegan from that day on. Becoming vegan awakened Dolly to the long spiritual heritage of her motherland, which is centered around the concept of ahimsa. Dolly upholds the ethics behind ahimsa in all forms, decrying not just meat and dairy, but also the use of honey, silk, eggs, and leather. She is dismayed that India, where cows are held sacred, is today one of the largest exporters of leather in the world. “A lot of people don't know, but India is one of the largest beef exporters in this world.” “We need to get this word ahimsa back, that originated in our country, because we've become so far away from it.” To achieve that goal, Dolly has been working tirelessly on a feature-length documentary entitled “The Land of Ahimsa,” which is scheduled for release in late 2020. “The Land of Ahimsa covers my journey of going vegan overnight, and going back to India to my motherland with two new sets of eyes to see – to see animal cruelty for the first time. And the movie covers a lot of amazing people here in the United States and in India.”

Supreme Master Ching Hai (Vegan) on the Harmful Effects of Meat, Part 18 - Lessons Learned from Animals

As most humans have lost the ability to telepathically communicate with each other and other beings, we do not know how animals think and feel. Fortunately, there are spiritual practitioners and animal communicators who can perceive the thoughts and feelings of animals. Today, we’ll present some of these people’s personal experiences encountering animals. “(It scared me also, that I can talk to the animals.) Why? It's good! (Yeah, because I didn't expect that they can respond me in the psychic. Sometimes when I pass by on the street and the dogs come by and I can hear his feeling or what he wants. Like sometimes I talk to them, but they are very scared. They keep distance from people, you know, they have broken heart, and they can hardly believe anymore that people can mean goodness to them.)” “(Recently, I went to a conference hall in Greece, and previously, it was a slaughterhouse.) Ah! Yes! (And I started feeling uncomfortable, and had pictures of panic and fright, and I didn't know why. I felt the pain and the panic. So, I started reciting the (Holy) Names, and I really cried for them, and I saw Your presence there. And their souls, I felt that their souls were liberated. They were previously entrapped in pain, in a level of pain. And through the reciting of the (Holy) Names and the prayer, they were liberated. ) Yeah, wonderful! (And I was grateful, and they were grateful immediately.) Oh, I am grateful to you, that you were there. (Thank You!) They were liberated... You bring love and blessing to them. (Yes, thanks to You, thanks to You. I brought You there, and it was such peace all over the place, and I immediately felt better, so I knew, I knew.)” “(I’d like to share something about the animals. I used to go and visit the cows. There was a field nearby with the cows. And sometimes I just needed to get something out, something off my chest and I’d cry from the bottom of my heart. And whenever I felt that way, the cows, I’d go and visit them, and they’d come right up to the fence every single time. And they also, they said a few things. They said they were very grateful for Supreme Master Television, for the work that You’re doing, for the work that all the disciples are doing. And sometimes I’d see one or two of the cows crying. And they said that it wasn’t because they knew of their fate, that they were going to die. They were crying for mankind.) They really feel sorry for humans, they don’t hate humans for hurting them even, the animals. When we’re hurting them, they are praying for us. They’re forgiving and they feel sorry for us so much. Because they feel that humans are so ignorant, they really didn’t know what they’re doing. So they feel very sorry. Yeah, so it’s good that you have such experience, very profound.”
