With her endless enthusiasm, Dolly has become friends with virtually everyone on the who’s who list of the animal rights movement in India and the USA. One person she is particularly close to is the renowned author, environmentalist, social justice advocate, and animal activist Dr. Sailesh Rao, a Shining World Award for Earth Protection laureate, who is also one of the key originators of the Internet as we know it today. “He talks about all this methane that is going into the air. He’s also talking about us chopping down the forests. Now, every 10 seconds, the Amazon forest is being chopped down for animal agriculture. So, animal agriculture is the number one reason for ocean dead zones, habitat destruction, environmental devastation, and these things have to change.” Dolly’s activism has taken her around the world. In India, she delivered a rousing speech at the World Vegan Conference in New Delhi in July 2019, about the harmful effects of dairy. “And God, Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Lord Jesus, Lord Buddha is full of compassion and love. They're trying to teach that, do not harm anyone, do not separate a mother and a child. So, I think we really need to understand what God is trying to say. And that is to live with compassion. That should be number one.” Dolly recognizes that dairy consumption is deep-rooted in Indian culture, which is one reason why she is working hard on her documentary film as a way to change the misconceptions in her motherland. “Once people find out the truth of who they really are, which is compassion, they want to change. They start thinking about this deeply. And I think that veganism is such a powerful movement right now, and it's growing so fast, because, if we don't go vegan, we are hurting our planet, and we really need to secure it for our future generations.”

Today, we are privileged to feature a charismatic lady, Dolly Vyas-Ahuja, whose powerful example of unconditional love and tireless work for our precious animal friends in the last five years are worthy of our high esteem and accolades. Dolly moved with her family to the USA as a one-year-old. Although her family had traditionally been vegetarian, she was allowed to adopt a non-vegetarian diet. One day in April 2014, however, she came across a speech online known as “The Greatest Speech Ever” by renowned animal freedom fighter Gary Yourofsky. She was so shocked by the graphic depictions of what occurs behind closed doors on the factory farms of the world that she had an emotional breakdown that night, turning vegan from that day on. Becoming vegan awakened Dolly to the long spiritual heritage of her motherland, which is centered around the concept of ahimsa. Dolly upholds the ethics behind ahimsa in all forms, decrying not just meat and dairy, but also the use of honey, silk, eggs, and leather. She is dismayed that India, where cows are held sacred, is today one of the largest exporters of leather in the world. “A lot of people don't know, but India is one of the largest beef exporters in this world.” “We need to get this word ahimsa back, that originated in our country, because we've become so far away from it.” To achieve that goal, Dolly has been working tirelessly on a feature-length documentary entitled “The Land of Ahimsa,” which is scheduled for release in late 2020. “The Land of Ahimsa covers my journey of going vegan overnight, and going back to India to my motherland with two new sets of eyes to see – to see animal cruelty for the first time. And the movie covers a lot of amazing people here in the United States and in India.”

Welcome to the final episode of “Running for Good – ‘Queen of the Extreme’ Fiona Oakes.” In the feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmaker Keegan Kuhn, Running for Good, Fiona talks about the driving force behind her dedication: “I've been very strong, but I’m very, very sensitive. I abhor cruelty to humans and animals alike. I don't think that in the 21st century especially, people should be suffering, and I certainly don't think animals should be suffering at people's hands. I can’t turn a blind eye. It’s not in me to do that.” The reality is clear, whether it’ll be SARS, MERS, Covid-19, Nipah, Ebola, Swine Fever, Avian Flu, they are all caused by eating animals. Whether those animals be factory-farmed, it makes no difference. Since all coronaviruses are caused by transferal from non-human to human animals, then surely now is the time to consider adopting a global vegan policy, which would be the most effective way of preventing future incidences. We may develop a vaccine for this particular strain, but what if it mutates, or another one comes along, which, given our history, seems more than likely. It may be argued you cannot tell people what to eat, but they are now being told to stay incarcerated in their homes, isolated, and feeling helpless and frightened. Surely, being vegan and ending this type of disaster is a choice they should be made more aware of and allowed to consider as a very real and viable option to protect themselves and each other from this happening again. In Her recent “Urgent Message to World Leaders,” Supreme Master Ching Hai points to the same solution and lays out a roadmap to a peaceable future: “You know well by now, by the UN’s warning, by scientific research report, we know that the meat, fish, eggs, milk, laboratory tests on animals, leather industry; ANYTHING TO DO WITH HURTING ANIMALS, domestic or wild, ARE DETRIMENTAL TO OUR WORLD. We talk about all kinds of climate reduction, or reducing air pollution BUT animal raising, fish, egg, milk industries, etc., anything to do with animals, are the worst producers of lethal methane gas which heats up our planet. So, stopping these brutal, murderous businesses is the fastest way to cool our Earth.”

With over 10 marathon wins and 3 world records under her belt, Fiona’s next major target is successfully completing the 4 Deserts Grand Slam – widely considered the toughest footrace series in the world. Within a calendar year, one must finish 4 of the world’s most challenging week-long, 155-mile (250-km) ultramarathons in some of the world’s most unforgiving terrain carrying one’s own food and supplies, a feat that only a small number of people have ever accomplished. Fiona has never had a coach and had to learn through trial and error how to train to push her limits without injuring her unstable right knee. She also recovers quickly from her strenuous workouts and sanctuary work with minimal rest. Fiona credits her lifelong vegan diet for her strength and resiliency. She eats only one simple, whole food, plant-based meal a day. “It’s very seasonal. I eat seasonal vegetables, which my father mainly grows, nuts, pulses, rice.” “One day will be my last day that I see, and all I am doing is trying to maximize my time on this Earth in order to do good, so when my last day does come, I know I’ve done all that I can, and that’s what I would encourage other people to do.” “I find the ultra-stage races do give me something more than physical endurance; they bring mental enhancement.” “We have to change the model in the way that we think, and to do that we have to learn for the others to have more; for it to be more fair distribution of resources along the planet, we have to accept and expect to have less and embrace that idea. And rather than looking at the things we aren’t having, look at the blessings we have all around us.”

On top of working the equivalent of two full-time jobs at the sanctuary, Fiona has built an elite running career in the last 20 years with the sole purpose of raising public awareness about the benefits of the vegan diet. And did we mention that she did it all on one kneecap? Indeed, it is a constant source of wonder to orthopedic surgeons how Fiona has been able to compete in marathons despite having lost a kneecap to surgery as a teenager. “I can do it on a vegan diet – there is no excuse in terms of it being prohibited to sporting excellence, even though I don’t consider myself particularly as a sportsperson or a runner. I can do it because it comes from the mind, it’s come from the belief, and I think that is what I would like to inspire in people.” One would be hard-pressed to find another super athlete with as much grit as Fiona Oakes and an equal amount of heart to match. These are qualities that have served her well in her advocacy for the animals. Her social media pages are filled with postings from people who were inspired by her to switch to a vegan lifestyle. While Fiona takes a non-confrontational approach in her animal rights activism, she would otherwise stop at nothing to promulgate the vegan ideal. One of her success stories is the Vegan Runners club which she co-founded in 2004. Members of the club proudly run with the words “Vegan Runners” emblazoned across their vests in races. While Fiona is a firm believer that actions speak louder than words, she is a highly sought-after public speaker, appearing regularly at VegFests and special events around the world, as well as on podcasts and national TV shows.

Today, we will continue our tribute to British endurance runner Fiona Oakes for her extraordinary accomplishments as an athlete and an animal rights advocate. For over two decades, Fiona has devoted her life to rescuing animals and promoting the benevolent vegan lifestyle. She cares for over 600 rescue animals at her animal sanctuary, Tower Hill Stables Sanctuary in Essex, England. Despite the 15-hour workdays and exhausting labor the sanctuary entails, she still finds the time and energy to maintain a strenuous regimen of training runs needed to compete on the world stage. “It is all done for the animals. My running I do to promote veganism, the sanctuary I do to nurture animals. And I’ve been vegan since I was six years old – completely self-inspired decision; my parents weren’t (vegan) at that time. So, my whole life has been pretty much dedicated to helping animals in some shape or form.” “And there’s so much you can learn from animals. Animals are a great leveler and a great teacher if you can listen to their message.” “With regards to the running, I run 9 times a week, about 100 miles (161 km) a week. That is really, really, tough to fit in at the level I am doing.” Thankfully, Fiona has help from some family members and a few volunteers. Two pillars of strength in her life are her mother, Meg and her life-partner, Martin. Fiona is also concerned about the disproportionately high environmental cost of animal-based food relative to plant-based food. In a recent Facebook posting on January 7, 2020, she wrote: “I quote Joseph Poore of Oxford University, ‘A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gasses, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use.’”

Today, it is our privilege to feature one of the top ultra-endurance athletes on the planet, Fiona Oakes, from Essex, England, UK. Fiona is one of the greatest athletes in the world judging by her records. She is the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest female in cumulative time to complete a marathon within the Antarctic Circle, as well as on the other six continents, at 23 hours, 27 minutes and 40 seconds. She also holds the Guinness World Records for the fastest female to complete a marathon on each of the seven continents plus the North Pole, in both aggregate time (28 hours, 20 minutes, and 50 seconds) and elapsed time (225 days and 18 hours). Fiona has been dubbed the “Queen of the Extreme” by her peers due to her grit in some of the most challenging races in the world. “I didn’t take to running because I wanted to run, I wanted to promote veganism and the benefits of a plant-based diet. I realized, I can rescue animals, and I can deliver harmonic existence for those in my care, but for the billions out there who are suffering, I can’t touch. How do I do that? And that was when I formulated the idea of going out and running. The reason was I wanted a platform to speak out.” “There was no social media at the time; the only thing that I was fairly good at was sports, but not running, but the only attention in sports for women was Paula Radcliffe who was running the marathon, and it had all kinds of hashtags, if you like. This is the toughest event in the athletic calendar, and if you can complete a marathon you can do anything.” Today, at the age of 51. Fiona’s running career remains in full swing. It is safe to say that she has proven what she had set out to prove: that a lifelong plant-based diet can sustain the highest levels of sports performance and physical health: “I am living proof of it, I’ve been running now for 20 years. We spoke to Selene in early February, 2020, at the Plant Powered Expo in London, where we were so excited to learn about her new book Yes Ve-Gan! Let’s hear what she had to tell us about this exciting time in her life. “So my new book Yes Ve-Gan! was published a month ago and it’s a blueprint for vegan living, so it’s letting people know how they can make the change and also explaining why you would want to; so it does cover the three main points: health, the environment and animals. But the reason why I really wanted to write it was because I wanted to communicate the joy of veganism; how happy it makes you, just something I never anticipated.” “The biggest shock I had when I went vegan was how much I loved it and that’s something that I see reflected all the time in other vegans. Every vegan I know says their only regret is not doing it sooner and I think there is a reason for that.” In 2018, Selene found herself in the middle of a public media storm when William Sitwell, the editor of a highly respected publication, Waitrose Food magazine, ridiculed her pitch to publish a series of vegan recipes. The email mocking vegans made headlines prompting lots of conversations on mainstream news media. In the midst of the storm, Selene had the opportunity to meet with the editor and talk about veganism, which reached over 650 million views online. Looking back at this episode in her career, Selene said, “I definitely didn’t expect that reaction from the editor. But I also never could have anticipated how big the story became and how angry it made some people. And I did already know that veganism was a highly divisive subject, but what that issue really brought home was the fact that eating animals, or not eating animals, is an extremely contentious issue.” In fact, one year later, William and Selene ended up on the cover of ‘The Telegraph Magazine’ talking about veganism. The beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai applauds all the vegan media in the world, and had this to say at a climate change conference in Washington DC. “The media has a very important role in our society, everybody knows that. The printed words are very powerful. Selene Nelson is an author, freelance journalist and vegan activist. Her latest book, Yes Ve-Gan! is a well written guide on how and why to go vegan. Selene Nelson was a vegetarian up to 2017, when she made the transition to veganism. Let’s find out what motivated Selene to make such a change. “What motivated me to become vegan was my love for animals, first and foremost. I was already vegetarian, when I went vegan, because I’d seen slaughterhouse footage and I thought I just don’t want any part of that but it’s very easy to look away from the dairy industry and the egg industry. I did that very successfully for quite a few years and it got to a point where I couldn’t look away anymore and I confronted the reality of these industries and once you see the footage and you are aware of how awful it is, I realized I would be just a real hypocrite if I decided dairy cows didn’t matter in the same way I thought beef cows did. So, it was just a decision I felt compelled to make.” “I wanted to travel and just experience life and it was that travel experience that made me become vegan. As soon as I did, I felt like I wanted to spread the message of veganism and let people know the reality of animal agriculture and allow people to make up their own minds, because I didn’t know any of that stuff before I was vegan and I think if I had that information I would’ve made the switch sooner, so I kind of felt it was my duty or my calling as cheesy as it might sound to actually use my journalism to spread that message.” Selene writes about the three main reasons for veganism: health, the environment, and animal ethics. Having travelled so extensively around the world, she shared with us how the vegan movement was reflected in all the various countries and cultures plus the reasons to motivate the success of veganism around the world. “I think definitely in the UK and the US there has been a strong interest in the health side of it, particularly recently. You have documentaries like the Game Changers on Netflix that are really popular and getting people to understand that vegan diet is not only healthy but it can actually be the best diet for you.”

In the first episode, Ms. Pearce shared with us about K-9 Angels’ re-homing project for their rescued dogs. Today, she will tell us about another of their important projects that allows for more canine lives to be saved from suffering. “I think in the beginning of the charity and like most people, when you see a dog in distress, you just want to pick them all up and get them into homes. But as you go along you start thinking with your head rather than with your heart, and you realize that if you really want to make a huge impact in the lives of dogs, the best thing you can do is sterilize them all. I’ve seen it firsthand, that puppies have been born on the streets, to die on the streets at a very, very young age.” “I believe for one un-spayed dog, they can have up to 67,000 puppies in six years. So that means their puppies and their puppies and their puppies, if they carried on having babies, would have up to 67,000 puppies in six years. So, you can imagine, just by spaying one dog, you are potentially saving so many dogs from being born on the streets.” To contribute even more with the fundraising, Ms. Pearce has taken on many challenges herself including cycling hundreds of miles, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro twice and wing walking on a bi-plane. Despite all the challenges she has to go through to alleviate the suffering of our loving, cherished canine friends, she is delighted to do so. In addition to their hands-on work, K-9 Angels is involved in activities that bring awareness and education to others. As a leader in dog welfare, it also attends the UK Parliament. “K-9 Angels have been attending Parliament now for the last, I think, six years. Now mainly, we’ve been supporting, a campaign called Lucy’s Law and Pup Aid, and it’s to stop the sale of third-party puppies being sold. We have been attending many meetings to have a law, which is now in place called ‘Lucy’s Law.’ So, now people can’t sell puppies that are third party sales.” “Yeah, I think Lucy’s law is probably the biggest success that we’ve been involved in.” Ms. Pearce reminds us how self-fulfilling it is to share love and compassion with others, including our animal companions. “My message would be that, I just feel that when we give to people, or give to others, or give to animals, we are giving to ourselves. And I think the more you are nicer to other people, and you spread love and you spread happiness, it all comes back to you.”

Through prayer, Tabitha received the message to share with others what she was eating as a vegan. Adopting the plant-based diet reversed her debilitating, mystery illness that had left her largely incapacitated for nineteen months. But upon reflection, Tabitha noted that there were other signs showing that eating animal derived foods were causing her harm. Regarding a plant-based diet, Tabitha wisely suggests, “Know your why” for going vegan. From personal experiences, she knows how many health benefits can come from the vegan diet and the immense impact to one’s life. Tabitha is also a very creative individual, from acting, to creating T-shirts, and even designing stunning waist capes for women called “Capeable by Tabitha Brown.” Tabitha is also a comedian, and has been cast in many films, including the multiple award-winning “I Am Still Here,” “Laughing to the Bank,” and others. “Listen, without art, it's a cold world, honey. Art helps us escape. It helps us dream. It helps us see things in a different way. Art is everything, like our life is art.” “Art is laughter, it is tears, it’s emotion, it’s everything that makes the world go around and without it, it’s a dark place. So I feel like, I'm living art, that's kind of how I live my life, I'm expressive. You know, I'm full of laughter and smiles and art is love, and that's definitely the best part of me, is the love. When you spread love, right? Like you’re smiling now, ‘cuz I'm smiling, right? That's art. So, my artistry is contagious. So yeah, I love it. Even as an actor, I love comedy.” Supreme Master Ching Hai has spoken on several occasions about artists and the importance of art in our lives, as in this conference with Aulacese (Vietnamese) artists in 2018. “The artists are the ones who bring a lot of mental and physical comfort, a lot of happiness, a lot of joy, to the people in this world. An artist is someone who comforts our spirit, and is indispensable in this life. Why don’t we thank them? We should at least have gratitude.”

Today, we are glad to introduce you to Ms. Victoria Featherstone Pearce, who is an award-winning model, actress, TV host, animal activist and co-founder of the dog rescue charity K-9 Angels. Ms. Pearce always uses her voice whenever possible, to bring awareness to others about the importance of caring for our defenseless animals. “And I literally, at the age of six or seven, I stopped eating meat all together. I basically said to my mum, I’m not going to eat animals anymore. For me, the strong connection with animals was there from a very young age, and I became vegetarian. When I was 33, I discovered the dark side of dairy, and I decided that I was going to be vegan, I wasn’t going to have dairy anymore.” Eight years ago, Ms. Pearce started the dog rescue charity K-9 Angels with her friends. Finding the right home for a rescued dog is essential. K-9 Angels has made this one of their missions, to ensure the dogs they saved are well taken care of, and live in harmony with their newly found families. “It’s really about matching the right home to the dog and that’s how we do things. We are very stringent on our home checks that we do, so we don’t just willingly just give out dogs; they have to go through a home check and everything is taken into consideration, from the size of the fence, to how long they’re at home, how many children they have, would they understand a dog’s needs.” Many studies show that adopting a shelter dog has numerous benefits, such as relieving stress, improving one’s health, making people happier and more active and the best part is knowing that you are guaranteed love and companionship from your new furry family member. “In the UK, I believe there’s around 120,000 dogs up and down the country in shelters right now that are begging for homes, so that breaks my heart. On a daily basis I think of those dogs and I just think all they want is to be loved. All they want is to sit on a sofa, and someone to cuddle them. For me, helping those dogs means the absolute the world to me. It’s made me look at life differently as well, and have more compassion for everything and everybody. Seeing the dogs suffer has made me realize just how lucky I am and it makes you reflect on your own life as well. It just puts a perspective on what life is really all about. I think we should help one another and help where we can, and by doing that we help ourselves.”

After watching the documentary “What the Health” and becoming a vegan, Tabitha regained her health and positivity. As a woman of faith, Tabitha received the message to share what she was eating via videos, which she is still doing to this day, with great success as unexpected opportunities presented themselves. “But I honestly feel like, ever since I've been on this journey, it just started shinning brighter. I truly believe I’m on assignment. I started this journey to save my life, but now, I’m helping to save other people's and I think that's the amazing part of it, so it definitely brought my spirituality and my assignment together and I cannot deny that, and I love it.” Having been raised in a Christian family, Tabitha feels that eating vegan is what was intended for us, just like food from the Garden of Eden. “I believe that we are supposed to eat from the land, and I believe that eating from the land heals us. I know it healed me. I don't judge anybody for their belief, but you have to believe what your body tells you.” Since becoming a vegan, Tabitha’s spirituality has flourished. Being so vibrant, she creates soulful, timely and welcome positive-mindset messages for her social media followers, whom she refers to as her “family.” “Because life is peaks and valleys, ups and downs, and we have to focus on knowing that the ‘up’ is coming again. It’s like, wow, I needed every bit of this, so I can live my purpose and share this with the world. ‘My purpose here is to bring this message to you while pointing you in the direction of unconditional love, which brings transformation so that you will realize your full unlimited potential.’” This is truly an inspiring goal and altruistic endeavor by Joe, the “Vegan Monk” Coleman. So, how would Monk encourage our viewers to change if some are still undecided about the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and other substances, and how would he inspire them to try to find answers from within, through meditation? “Anything we do destructive to ourselves, there's a reason why we're doing it. Each individual has a different path to getting to that point where they don't need the alcohol, they don't need the drugs, they don’t need the cigarettes, they don't need all the distractions that they have, to not feel what they’re feeling. We are so happy to feature the colorful life of vegan bodybuilder, life-style coach and meditation instructor, Monk Coleman, previously known as Joe Coleman. Mr. Coleman’s story paints an arc from difficult beginnings as a directionless young man who got entangled in addiction and the criminal world, to rediscovering and trusting his inner voice, guiding him to become the compassionate, vibrant vegan success he embodies today. Before fully adopting his new name, Monk underwent some profound changes in his consumption habits. Over time and through meditation, he discarded all unhealthy practices, including eating meat or any other animal products. After he stopped eating meat, Monk felt sure that he was no longer hurting anyone. A few years later though, when he started to notice the word “vegan” appearing more often during his research into vegetarian bodybuilding, he began to dig deeper, only to discover the sad truth about the processes behind other animal products, such as eggs and milk. In a 2019 motivational clip for Shining World Compassion Award recipient, Mercy For Animals, Monk shared his experiences of meditation, becoming vegan and plant-based bodybuilding. “Basically, through my meditation practice, I became reconnected to all life and didn’t want to do any harm to any other beings, and at that moment, I became vegan.” Mr. Coleman, an IFPA (International Federation of Physique Athletes) Pro and WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) champion in Natural Physique, attributes his success in bodybuilding to the tried and tested characteristics of consistency, hard work, commitment, as well as his switch to the plant-strong diet. Monk said: “It was about one year after turning vegan that my body started to change some. I got leaner, healthier, more energetic, and I healed quicker. It felt good.” Monk recommends the following to people wanting to go vegan today: “My advice for anybody that wants to go vegan is to do some research.
