When I read all this information, it was just like the lights switched on, and I just went vegan overnight. I worked for Animal Liberation for over a decade. I’ve also worked for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Today we are sharing the achievements and successes of a courageous and noble man, Mr. Kuntal Joisher, the world’s first vegan to scale Mt. Everest. His climbing journey of the Himalayas started in 2009. With his persistent determination and fortitude, Mr. Kuntal stood on the top of Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the word, in May, 2016, from the Nepal side and again successfully in 2019, from the China side. “Sitting here right now, it’s almost been seventeen years that I have now been a vegan. And I have to tell you, that this was the best decision I have ever made in my life, because since that day I have been able to sleep every single night peacefully, knowing that o animals had to be killed for me to lead my life or me to pursue my dreams. It was a chance encounter in 2009, where I actually found that climbing mountains was the calling of my life. Mt. Everest simply cannot be conquered. It is always the mountain that decides whether you are going to make it to the top. So, it was during this journey, that I overcame so many of my self-doubts, so many of my limitations, and I conquered myself.”

Although the decision not to send his sheep for slaughter has cost him almost £10,000 in lost earnings, Kumar has no regrets and has peace of mind. Being aware of climate change, Kumar decided that, along with changing his business from animal livestock farming to organic vegetable growing, he would also change his diet. “At the moment, I am a vegetarian. I am in the process of becoming a vegan.” “It’s only a small farm, but I think if we all do a little bit, little bit, we will make a big impact on the planet’s ecosystem.” “But it will change, because now we’re seeing climate change, that evidence coming up that livestock farming is causing, creating a lot of carbon emission and so, the farming system has to change.” In closing, Kumar expresses his love for all beings. “From my heart, I would like to tell everybody that every life matters on this planet. So, let’s not destroy them. Look after them, nurture them; they are precious. The planet is precious for us. Let’s be kind to all living beings.”

Kumar was born in Sri Lanka and spent his childhood working on the family dairy farm. He has since worked on various livestock farms, and in 2010 set up his own sheep farm in Devon. Although Kumar liked his career, he could not bear the pressure involved in the process of taking his animals to the slaughterhouse. Once his daughter, a livestock veterinarian, asked him what he planned to do with his lambs, he decided on the spot to end the animal farming he had been doing for 30 plus years. “And I said to Molly: ‘No, that is the end of it. I would not take them to the slaughterhouse. I need to find a sanctuary for them.’ which was a great relief for me.” “So, there’s no regret at all. It was a wonderful thing I have done.” He keeps 70 ewes for himself as pets and enjoys the joy and peace this brings knowing he’s made the right decision. “And also, it’s time for all of us to do something for the planet and for climate change and eat more vegetables and make sure that this planet is there for our future generations.”

In 2013 Tal Gilboa co-founded “Israel Animal Liberation Front” which was renamed “Total Liberation Israel” in 2018. This is one of the fastest growing social movements of our time calling for the total liberation of animals everywhere through marches, rallies and blockading trucks to the slaughter houses etc. The animal justice movement is increasingly attracting adherents across Israel and the activism is paving the way for a new era in animal rights. Besides various initiatives including creative protests and demonstrations, Tal Gilboa was also delivering lectures to diverse audiences: from high-school students to the military, business and political decision-makers. Her passion for animal causes took her to face unchartered territory, to compete for the first time and won the 6th edition of the intense contest of HaAh HaGadol. “Half a million people changed their diet while I was there. She reflected on how best to honor a parent’s responsibility to children in terms of clear and honest education regarding animals. “And what I did was to take them all, the three of them, to farms. I wanted them to to watch the truth. Now I could say the truth to them by my knowledge, the calves are in these little cages, because they’re separated from their mothers. This is what I did and they changed because of that." We will have less packaging, things will not be able to be transported long distances and therefore have to be in plastic. Things will change and people will stop buying bottled water. I think those things are gonna change without any doubt. There’s no doubt at all, in my mind.”

Thanks in part to her efforts, SB 1249 was signed into law in September 2018.
