Aviral Pokhrel: The Boy Who Can “See” Using Touch and Smell

Twelve-year-old Aviral Pokhrel of Nepal has an unusual ability. He can see colors and objects through his senses of touch and smell. I try to feel using my hands, and if I’m unable to identify things clearly with my hands, then I try to smell them. And based on their smell, I can tell what they are. Sometimes it just comes to me, then based on that I say what it is and it matches, too. And when we practice even more and more deeply, and go even deeper, we may be able to just hold a book in our hands, just shake it to even figure out what’s there on which page number of the book.

Bribris-indigenous of Costa Rica

The proud Bribri cultural legacy passes from one generation to the next through an oral tradition. This indigenous group has a strong bond with Mother Earth. Their language is called Bribri, which approximately 60% of the residents of the Talamanca Bribri Indigenous Reserve speak. Within the Bribri, people belong to different clans, and membership is based on the clan affiliation of one’s mother. Today, the Bribri remain an agricultural group, and besides corn, raise tubers, cacao, bananas, pejibaye, yucca, rice, and beans. Their belief regarding their origin as a people has agricultural roots. There is a belief among the Bribri that all are equal and that humans are not above the trees or water in the forest in terms of importance. As a result, nature is treated in a reverential manner.

Does consciousness exist beyond the body and brain? Mr. Gober has found considerable scientific and anecdotal evidence suggesting that consciousness exists beyond the brain. Perhaps the most compelling support comes from near-death experiences. “In the life review, the example of Dannion Brinkley, after he relived his life four times, he saw the pain that the inflicted and he saw the joy that he gave to people. So, when he came back from his near-death experience, his life changed dramatically. He was much less materialistic. He became a hospice volunteer. And he understands the accountability that we all have, that our actions matter beyond what happens in this body.”

La curieuse relation entre le cerveau et la conscience, partie 1/3

On today’s program, we’ll hear from Mr. Mark Gober, author of “An End to Upside Down Thinking” and host of the new podcast, “Where is My Mind?” In addition, Mr. Gober is on the Board of Directors at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), a research center dedicated to exploring and expanding human capacity. “What is the relationship between the brain and consciousness? Does the brain create consciousness? Let’s think about the philosophical implications.” “And the thesis that I arrived at is it’s not that consciousness comes from the brain, but it’s the other way around. That consciousness is the basis of all reality existing beyond space and time. And the material world is an emergence or an experience within consciousness.”

Les cas d’expériences de mort imminente d'un chirurgien cardiaque

Today we’ll hear some accounts of near-death experiences from renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Lloyd Rudy, interviewed by Dr. Michael Milligan, president of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Heath. And all of a sudden! Nobody spoke. Because everybody in that room felt a ‘presence.’ And he stopped bleeding just like that. What is your take on that, Dr. Rudy? Oh, there’s something out there that people with faith, believers, is there. Some people call it God, some people call it other things, Buddha, or (Prophet) Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), or whoever. It has convinced me there is something out there.

Joya de Cerén: A Window into the Past

Since around AD 600, the pre-Hispanic Mayan farming village of Joya de Cerén slept undisturbed beneath thick layers of ash four to eight meters deep. offering us a unique window into the past. With much of the Joya de Cerén yet to be excavated, each new discovery provides evidence of the ancient Mayans’ wealth of wisdom. The investigations tell us a story of a very well organized and spiritual farming community that is part of a more intricate network of cities, villages, and settlements. Moreover, the discoveries have helped researchers link some modern-day customs and practices to the ancestral activities and beliefs from which they began.

Eco-friendly Air Taxis

Air taxis can be sustainable, comfortable vehicles for making short flights across congested cities. Besides being able to avoid busy street-level traffic, they can take off from and land on short runways or helipads. Today, we’ll find out what kinds of eco-friendly flying taxis will soon be available. Kitty Hawk’s operator Zephyr Airworks recently formed a partnership with Air New Zealand to bring the first fleet of air taxis to market. Mr. Yifang Xiong, co-founder of EHang, said, “The EHang 216, which can seat tow passengers, has been tested comprehensively and is essentially ready for mass production.”

Children of the Forest: Central Africa’s Baka and Mbuti Peoples

Both the Baka and the Mbuti see the forest as their spiritual father and mother. They are a semi-nomadic group who have historically lived by foraging in the forest to supply all their needs. Whether Mbuti or Baka, everyone participates in the making of music as part of their every day interaction with others in their community and the forest. The Mbuti are categorized as a peaceful society for several reasons. Social customs are built around sharing, cooperating, interdependence, and avoiding disharmony with other groups of forest dwellers.

Dumbo Octopuses: Intelligent Lovelies of the Deep

Speaking of flying, that brings me to the cute nickname you all have given my kind. While our scientific genus name is grimpoteuthis, the nickname we have most popularly come to be known as is the “Dumbo octopus.” That name is based on the fictional character “Dumbo” from the 1941 animated Disney film of the same name. Humans should consider us octopuses as royalty as well, for we too have blue blood! Scientists already known that we octopuses are quite smart. They know we can find our way through mazes, figure out problems, and even remember the solutions to those problems. We can take things apart for fun, and researchers have also realized that each octopus has a distinct personality.
