Understanding Edema: What Your Body May Be Telling You

Sometimes, if you gently press on a swollen area with a finger, it leaves a small dent for a few seconds before returning to normal. This is called “pitting edema.”

While swelling is often harmless, it can sometimes be a signal that something deeper is going on. Your heart, kidneys, liver, and lymphatic system all work together to balance your body’s fluids. If one of these systems isn’t functioning at its best, fluid can start to build up. Even so, it’s important to remember that swelling on its own doesn’t tell the whole story. One of the most helpful questions to ask isn’t simply, “Am I swollen?” but rather, “What pattern does the swelling follow?” For example, swelling in both feet or ankles after a long day on your feet is often very different from swelling that affects only one leg. Puffiness around the eyes that is most noticeable in the morning may have different explanations than ankles that gradually become swollen by evening.

The good news is that many cases of mild, temporary swelling can often be improved with a few simple daily habits. One of the easiest places to start is by reducing excess salt in your diet, since too much sodium encourages the body to hold on to water. Staying well hydrated is just as important. Although it may seem surprising, drinking enough water actually helps your body maintain a healthy fluid balance, making it easier to regulate fluids rather than conserve them. Movement also plays an important role. If you’ve been sitting or standing in one position for a long time, taking a short walk, stretching your legs, or simply changing positions can help improve circulation and encourage fluid to move back toward the heart.

Your overall eating pattern can also make a difference. A vegan diet centered on whole foods naturally provides plenty of potassium from foods such as leafy greens, beans, bananas, and sweet potatoes, helping the kidneys balance sodium and excess fluid. Many fruits and vegetables, including cucumbers, watermelon, celery, and asparagus, also contain plenty of water and may gently support the body’s normal fluid regulation.

While most episodes of swelling are temporary and improve with time, there are instances when it’s best to get a professional opinion. If swelling happens suddenly, becomes severe, affects only one leg, or comes with shortness of breath or chest discomfort, it’s best to seek medical attention promptly. The same goes for swelling that keeps getting worse, or if you notice unusual fatigue or changes in urination frequency.
