Vision is one of our most valuable senses, shaping how we experience the world every day. The good news is that many vision problems can be prevented or managed through simple everyday habits. One of the most important steps you can take to protect your vision is to schedule regular eye exams. Once you reach age 40, a complete exam is recommended, with frequency of future checks as per one’s risk factors.

A healthy, balanced vegan diet provides the nutrients your eyes need to function well throughout life and may help lower the risk of certain age-related eye conditions. Nutrients such as vegan-sourced omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and E all contribute to maintaining healthy eyes. Vegan sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts, flaxseed, chia seeds, edamame, seaweed, and algae, help support eye structure, normal function, and long-term eye health.

Regular movement boosts circulation, delivering vital oxygen and nutrients to your eyes. Health experts recommend aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, but it doesn’t have to be done all at once. Another important way to protect your vision is to quit if you smoke.

When shopping, look for lenses labeled “100% UV protection” or “UV400” to block both UVA and UVB rays. While you may worry about blue light, the real culprit is prolonged screen time. If your eyes feel dry, remember to blink more often and use artificial tears if recommended. Finally, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet (6 meters) away for at least 20 seconds.
