American hospice nurse Erica McKenzie shares how she died and met God, Who cured her eating disorder.
Erica battled bulimia— a disorder involving regular overeating followed by forced vomiting— from age 12, driven by self-imposed pressure to meet societal beauty standards. The struggle continued through college, marriage, motherhood, and her nursing career. Erica’s first job involved prescribing fen-phen, a narcotic diet pill to which she became addicted for nine years. The drug caused sleeplessness, erratic behavior, and severe breathing problems.
One night, after nearly suffocating, Erica’s husband urged her to rest at a hotel. Lightheaded and panicked, she fled her room without shoes or identification, fearing she would die in the bathtub. In the parking lot, a man nearly hit her but stopped. Seeing a Bible in his car, Erica felt a Divine sign to trust him. He took her to a church, where a pastor helped carry her inside. Erica was unable to recall her own name and struggled to breathe. The pastor asked if she believed in God. Erica affirmed, “I believe in God,” and with her final breath, she left her body.
Erica’s spirit rose to the ceiling, exhilarated and free, watching paramedics work on her body like a movie. She admired her body but realized it wasn’t her true self. An angelic presence blanketed Erica with love and guided her through a tunnel at supersonic speed, filling her with indescribable bliss, unbound by earthly senses. Then came God’s overwhelming presence, surrounded by stars in a galaxy-like expanse. Erica felt at home and telepathically communicated with God, Who answered her thoughts with love. God showed her a life review, starting from her birth, highlighting moments like losing her first tooth, graduating high school, and becoming a mother. Unlike her Christian upbringing’s expectation, God did not judge her; instead, He loved her. He replaced her fears with love and taught her that judgment is the opposite of love. Erica suddenly realized she had wasted so much time judging herself, leading to toxic behaviors like bulimia and addiction that caused her death.
God then gave Erica huge car-sized glasses, which Erica miraculously wore, revealing everything missing from her first life review. God explained that these were the things that mattered to Him. Erica saw overlooked moments of kindness, like the time she sang “Jesus Loves Me” to an elderly woman at a nursing home, who responded with deep love. Erica realized we often dismiss such moments as unimportant, yet they are what truly make a lasting positive difference.
She then saw bookshelves filled with unique gifts, and God explained He gave her patience and beauty at birth— not external beauty, but the beauty of her heart. This realization relieved her lifelong feelings of inadequacy.
Next, God showed her Earth engulfed in flames, with souls rising unscathed to Heaven. Erica felt relief, but God’s profound sadness for those left behind— souls who rejected the love connection through free will— moved her to comfort Him. God explained that the love connection fuels souls, and those who choose it ascend, while others remain behind.
Despite Erica’s desire to join the souls in Heaven, God stopped her, saying she must return with her gifts of patience and beauty, plus new gifts of knowledge and wisdom. He instructed her to listen quietly to others and use these gifts to change millions of lives. Before she could argue, Erica was pushed into a slow, dark tunnel filled with angry, hateful voices. Hands pulled at her, draining her life force, until she cried out to God, re-establishing the love connection, which lifted her above their grasp. She hovered over her body in the emergency room and was forced back into it, regaining consciousness.
After recovery, Erica began sharing her near-death experience and became a hospice nurse, helping others approach death with peace and emphasizing that every life and act of love matters (Coming Home)
