It’s an amazing network of trails called Kumano Kodo(meaning “ancient paths”) ; it is one of only two pilgrimages in the world recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a World Heritage Site. Another pilgrimage is the Shikoku Pilgrimage, one of the oldest pilgrimage trails in the world and one of only few that are circular, the Shikoku Pilgrimage is a route that connects 88 temples around the circumference of the island.
