Selections from "The World’s Advance Thought" – a Periodical by Lucy A. Mallory (vegetarian): On Love, Part 2 of 2

“Love is all sufficient to itself. Love makes perfect. When Love has become conscious in us, then is life joyous in all its expressions. Keep the mind filled with kind, loving thoughts and you will never be burdened. The Angels of the Lord will bless you! The difference between an Angel and a devil, is that the Angel makes a Heaven out of a hades, and the devil makes a hades out of a Heaven.” “Love knows. Love satisfies. Love yourself: Love is a Reformer. Love is the Creator. Love overcomes death. Love prevents old age. Love transforms all enmity. Love makes things intelligent. Love is the Door to Happiness. Love has a Universal Language. Love is Spiritual Understanding. Love never fails in any purpose. Love purifies everything it touches. Love is clairvoyant and clairaudient. Love things, and they will be beautiful. Love transforms all discords to Harmony. Love is a sure wrinkle eradicator (no charges). Love dissolves the veil between this world and the Spirit World.” “God now materializes to human comprehension. This is the Day of Judgment when the world begins to pay. When the killing ceases, contagious diseases will cease. God is the Triune-Light-in-One: the Light of Love, the Light of Intelligence, and the Light of Day. The opposite, or God's Shadow, is the triune-darkness-in-one: the darkness of hatred, the darkness of ignorance, and the darkness of night. Virtue grows and thrives in the first, and criminality in the last. Where Love rules, God rules; where hatred rules, the Shadow reigns. Where Wisdom is; God is there; where ignorance prevails, the Shadow is on top.” “There is a Glorious Time coming soon. The Lord is over all, and all disorder must now come into Heavenly Order! Keep a cheerful heart, and be quiet, and Heaven will be in control!”

Selections from "The World’s Advance Thought" – a Periodical by Lucy A. Mallory (vegetarian): Evolution of Life, Part 1 of 2

“The Spirited Monthly Newspaper – The World's Advance Thought” was a monthly periodical founded by Lucy A. Mallory in 1886. The paper’s motto was “Love is the way, the truth, and the life.” Mrs. Lucy Mallory contributed her own spiritual writings as well as the inspired contributions of others. Through this uplifting publication, Lucy Mallory highlighted themes that emphasized the “inner light” of the human being. She also advocated vegetarianism for its loving kindness to other beings. She once said, “Vegetarianism is becoming worldwide. We are not speaking of forced vegetarianism – that doesn't count. We are speaking of vegetarians who have adopted the humane diet because of a sense of justice to animals.” And also, “The animal is not soulless; it has the seeds of all human principles. Through the lower forms of life these seeds are dormant. Every human principle is there, but unborn, save the vital, the astral and the instrumental.” We now share with you selections from the periodical – “The World’s Advance Thought.” “Soul Communion is the unabridged Fountain of Wisdom, and those who enter this Sanctuary of Life will be blest with that which unfolds the Immortal Consciousness, where death is unknown. If the peoples of all the nations would unite in observing Soul Communion, Universal Peace would be established in the being of all and in the World Consciousness.” “Everything is moving Godward. We get according to our capacity to receive. The Spirit of Love leads directly to Heaven.” “The observance of Kindness to Animals is the greatest movement for the progress of the whole world. Everything, animate, and that which we call ‘inanimate,’ has life-force. This is why we are attracted to some things and persons and not to others.” “Spirit communication is a Fount of Golden Suggestions. To the aspiring and thoughtful they are a treasury of infinite possibilities and value. God is the Unselfish, Altruistic, Wise and Loving, Constructive Principle in Humanity; the devil is the ignorant, selfish, hateful, vicious, destructive lack of principle in Humanity.”

Selections from The Mother’s “Prayers and Meditations” - Be Instruments of the Divine, Part 2 of 2

Selections from The Mother’s “Prayers and Meditations” - Be Instruments of the Divine, Part 2 of 2

“See how very little all outer circumstances matter. Why strive and strain so to realize thy own conception of Truth? Be suppler, more trusting. The only duty is not to let oneself be troubled by anything. To torment oneself about doing the right thing causes as much harm as a bad will. Only in a calm as of deep waters can be found the possibility of True Service.” “O Lord, Master of our life, let us soar very high above all care for our material preservation. Nothing is more humiliating and depressing than these thoughts so constantly turned towards the preservation of the body, these preoccupations with health, the means of subsistence, the framework of life.… How very insignificant is all this, a thin smoke that a simple breath can disperse or a single thought turned towards Thee dispel like a vain mirage!” “In this calm concentration which comes before day-break, more than at any other moment, my thought rises to Thee, O Lord of our being, in an ardent prayer. Grant that this day which is about to dawn may bring to the earth and to men a little more of pure light and true peace; may Thy manifestation be more complete and Thy sweet law more widely recognized; may something higher, nobler, more true be revealed to mankind; may a vaster and deeper love spread abroad so that all painful wounds may be healed; and may this first sunbeam dawning upon the earth be the herald of joy and harmony, a symbol of the glorious splendor hidden in the essence of life. O Divine Master, grant that today may bring to us a completer consecration to Thy Will, a more integral gift of ourselves to Thy work, a more total forgetfulness of self, a greater illumination, a purer love. Grant that in a communion growing ever deeper, more constant and entire, we may be united always more and more closely to Thee and become Thy servitors worthy of Thee. Remove from us all egoism, root out all petty vanity, greed and obscurity. May we be all ablaze with Thy divine Love; make us Thy torches in the world...”

Selections from The Mother’s “Prayers and Meditations” - Be Instruments of the Divine, Part 1 of 2

Selections from The Mother’s “Prayers and Meditations” - Be Instruments of the Divine, Part 1 of 2

In today’s program, we will get to know a saint who, as she stated, belonged “to no nation, no civilization, no society, no race, but to the Divine.” We will learn through her writings how to be good instruments of the Divine. Mirra Alfassa, who became known as The Mother, or SriMa, was born in 1878 in Paris, France. Based on her inner experience and guidance by a Saint she later recognized as Sri Aurobindo, she travelled to India in 1914, where she met him for the first time. The Mother also developed an extensive series of spiritual writings. These highlight a goal of ultimate union with the Divine, along with becoming master of ourselves and our destiny. Shining through all of her work is the Mother’s love and devotion to God. Though she left her body in 1973, the 17 volumes of collected works of the Mother forever serve as a shining guidance and inspiration for spiritual seekers. The following passages come from the Mother’s first spiritual diary volume, “Prayers and Meditations.” “Last night I had the experience of the effectivity of confident surrender to Thy guidance; when it is needful that something should be known, one knows it, and the more passive the mind to Thy illumination, the clearer and the more adequate is its expression. I listened to Thee as Thou spoke in me, and I would have liked to write down what Thou said so that the formula in all its precision might not be lost,—for now I should not be able to repeat what was said.” “It is Thou who art the doer in each thing and each being, and he who is near enough to Thee to see Thee in all actions without exception, will know how to transform each act into a benediction. To abide always in Thee is the one thing that matters, always and ever more and more in Thee, beyond illusions and the deceptions of the senses, not drawing back from action, refusing it, rejecting it — a struggle useless and pernicious — but living Thee alone in the act whatever it may be, ever and always Thee; then the illusion is dispelled, the falsehoods of the senses vanish, the bond of consequences is broken, all is transformed into a manifestation of the glory of Thy Eternal Presence. So let it be. Amen.”

From the Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library: On the Resurrection and the Father, Part 2 of 2

Today, we continue with a selection from the Nag Hammadi’s Treatise on the Resurrection, also known as “The Letter to Rheginos,” as well as a passage from The Tripartite Tractate. “He existed before anything other than Himself came into being. The Father is a single One, like a number, for He is the first One and the One Who is only Himself. Yet He is not like a solitary individual. Otherwise, how could He be a father? For whenever there is a ‘father,’ the name ‘son’ follows. But the single One, Who alone is the Father, is like a root, with tree, branches and fruit. It is said of Him that He is a Father in the proper sense, since He is inimitable and immutable. Because of this, He is single in the proper sense, and is a God, because no one is a god for Him nor is anyone a father to Him. For He is unbegotten, and there is no other who begot Him, nor another who created Him.” “In the proper sense, He alone - the good, the unbegotten Father, and the complete perfect One - is the one filled with all His offspring, and with every virtue, and with everything of value. And He has more, that is, lack of any malice, in order that it may be discovered that whoever has anything is indebted to Him, because He gives it, being Himself unreachable and unwearied by that which He gives, since He is wealthy in the gifts which He bestows, and at rest in the favors which He grants.” “He is of such a kind and form and great magnitude that no one else has been with Him from the beginning; nor is there a place in which He is, or from which He has come forth, or into which He will go; nor is there a primordial form, which He uses as a model as He works; nor is there any difficulty which accompanies Him in what He does; nor is there any material which is at His disposal, from which creates what He creates; nor any substance within Him from which He begets what He begets; nor a co-worker with Him, working with Him on the things at which He works. To say anything of this sort is ignorant. Rather, (one should speak of Him) as good, faultless, perfect, complete, being Himself the Totality.”

From the Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library: On the Resurrection and the Father, Part 1 of 2

00:12:10

From the Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library: On the Resurrection and the Father, Part 1 of 2

The Nag Hammadi Library is a collection of early Christian and Gnostic manuscripts, also called codices, discovered in 1945 near the Upper Egyptian town called Nag Hammadi. The general dating of the books varies from the 2nd to the 4th century. The collection includes 13 ancient books containing over 50 spiritual texts. The discovery and translation of these scriptures helped scholars to re-evaluate early Christian history and the nature of Gnosticism, a Christian movement originating in the first and second century that emphasized “gnosis.” “Gnosis” means the direct knowing or acquaintance of the Divine through esoteric experience. We will now read an excerpt from the Nag Hammadi’s Treatise on the Resurrection, which is also referred to as “The Letter to Rheginos.” “Then, indeed, as the Apostle said, ‘We suffered with Him, and we arose with Him, and we went to Heaven with Him.’ Now if we are manifest in this world wearing Him, we are that One’s beams, and we are embraced by Him until our setting, that is to say, our death in this life. We are drawn to Heaven by Him, like beams by the sun, not being restrained by anything. This is the spiritual resurrection which swallows up the psychic in the same way as the fleshly.” “What, then, is the resurrection? It is always the disclosure of those who have risen. For if you remember reading in the Gospel that Elijah appeared and Moses with him, do not think the resurrection is an illusion. It is no illusion, but it is truth! Indeed, it is more fitting to say the world is an illusion, rather than the resurrection, which has come into being through our Lord the Savior, Jesus Christ.” “But the resurrection does not have this aforesaid character, for it is the truth which stands firm. It is the revelation of what is, and the transformation of things, and a transition into newness. For imperishability descends upon the perishable; the light flows down upon the darkness, swallowing it up; and the Pleroma (spiritual universe) fills up the deficiency. These are the symbols and the images of the resurrection. He it is who makes the good.”

Selections from Revelations of the Unseen by Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī: Discourses 1-6, Part 2 of 2

00:12:12

Selections from Revelations of the Unseen by Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī: Discourses 1-6, Part 2 of 2

“Your extinction to self-will through the action of Allah is indicated by your never formulating any personal goal, your lack of selfish interest, and the fact that you no longer feel any want or craving, for besides the will of Allah you wish for nothing else. Instead, the action of Allah is at work in you, so that while you are experiencing Allah’s will and action your limbs become relaxed, your mind becomes calm and your feelings widen, your face begins to glow and your inner being thrives. In contact with their Creator, you feel no need of things. The hand of Power will turn you every way about, and the tongue of Eternity will summon you. The Lord of all religions will teach you, and clothe you in beams of His own light and special raiment, and install you among those possessed of ancient knowledge.” “‘Now you will be admitted to the company of those whose hearts have been shattered, their human will-power broken and their natural appetites eliminated, and who have then been re-endowed - but with a Will Sublime [Rabbaniyya: ‘pertaining to the Lord’]. Allah (Exalted is He) has said: ‘I am with those who are brokenhearted on My account.’ So Allah (Exalted is He) will not be with you until you totally disown your desire and your will. When these are broken, and you contain nothing stable or useful, Allah will create you afresh and install in you a new power of will for you to exercise. If any element of self creeps into this newly created will, however, the Lord (Exalted is He) will smash it again. You will always be left broken-hearted, because He will repeat this process until the book of destiny ends with reunion. This is the meaning of: ‘I am with those who are broken-hearted on My account.’”

Selections from Revelations of the Unseen by Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī: Discourses 1-6, Part 1 of 2

al-Ghawth al-A’zam Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī was born in the year 1078 in the Persian province of Gilan (present-day Iran), to parents who were blessed with direct lineage to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī left home at the age of 18 to seek higher knowledge of Islamic scriptures and law. Seeking a deeper connection with Allah, He then studied with Sufi instructors, Shaikh Abu’l-Khair Hammad ad-Dabbas and Shaikh Abu Saeed Al-Mukharrami. For the next few years, Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī renounced everyday life to practice spiritually in the desert regions of Iraq. After returning to Baghdad, He began to write and lecture. Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī became known as a “Reviver of the Religion” (Muhyi'd-Din) due to His continuous reaffirmation of traditional Islamic teachings. Among the main themes He highlighted was the spiritual upliftment that comes from conquering one's ego to submit to God's will. Today we will share selections from one of Shaikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī’s best-known works, “Revelations of the Unseen.” “The Shaikh (may Allah be well pleased with him, and grant him contentment) said: ‘Three things inevitably demand the attention of every believer under all circumstances: A commandment to be obeyed, a prohibition to be respected, and a divine decree to be accepted with good grace. In even the most trivial situation, at least one of the three is bound to apply. The believer must therefore keep his mind and feelings focused upon them, talk to himself about them, and practice the physical self-discipline they require of him at all times.’” “Gone forth from his own self, out into his Master’s work, he now sees nothing but that Master and His work, and neither hears nor comprehends from any other source. If he perceives at all, if he does hear and learn, His [Allah’s] speech is what he listens to, and His knowledge is what he comes to know.” “With Him he feels at peace, and in His discourse he takes delight, while from all others he recoils and shrinks away.”

From Godfré Ray King’s Unveiled Mysteries – Revealed Ancient Wisdom by Ascended Master Saint Germain (vegetarian), Part 2 of 2

Today, we continue with a selection from Guy Warren Ballard’s, or Godfré Ray King’s book “Unveiled Mysteries.” “When one allows his mind to dwell upon thoughts of hate - condemnation - lust - envy - jealousy - criticism - fear - doubt - or suspicion - and allows these feelings of irritation to generate within him - he will certainly have discord, failure and disaster in his mind, body and world. As long as he persists in allowing his attention to be held by such thoughts - whether they be about nations - persons - places - conditions - or things - he is absorbing those activities into the substance of his mind, his body, and his affairs - in fact he is compelling - forcing - them into his experience.” “The Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit is the feeling side of Life - God - the Activity of Divine Love - or the Mother Expression of Deity. This is why the sin against the Holy Ghost is referred to - as that which brings such great distress - because any discord in the feeling breaks the Law of Love - which is the Law of Balance - Harmony -and Perfection.” “The greatest crime in the Universe against the Law of Love is humanity’s almost ceaseless sending forth - of every kind of irritable and destructive feeling.” “He - who cannot or will not control his thoughts and feelings - is in a bad way - for every door of his consciousness is wide open to the disintegrating activities - thrown off by other minds and the emotions of other personalities. It takes neither strength, wisdom nor training to give way to unkind, destructive impulses, and the full-grown human beings who do this are but children - in their development of self-control.” “However - no matter how much effort it takes to bring these two activities under control - it is worth any amount of time and energy expended - and no Real - Permanent - Dominion - of one’s Life and world can take place without it. It will be my pleasure and privilege to teach you the use of these Higher Laws, and their application will enable you to release True Wisdom and bring about All Perfection.”

From Godfré Ray King’s Unveiled Mysteries – Revealed Ancient Wisdom by Ascended Master Saint Germain (vegetarian), Part 1 of 2

Guy Warren Ballard was a United States mining engineer and a co-founder, together with his wife Edna Anne Wheeler Ballard, of the “I AM” spiritual movement, inspired by his life-changing meeting with the Ascended Master Saint Germain. From Master Saint Germain’s dictation and teachings, Mr. Ballard wrote a series of books under the pseudonym Godfré Ray King. Today, the volumes documenting the precious mysteries revealed by the Ascended Master to Godfré Ray King are still a fascinating spiritual gem for many across the globe. The three most famous volumes are titled “Unveiled Mysteries,” “The Magic Presence,” and “The ‘I AM’ Discourses.” We will now read a passage from Guy Warren Ballard's, or Godfré Ray King’s book “Unveiled Mysteries.” “The Truth of Life is you cannot desire that which is not possible of manifestation somewhere in the universe. The more intense the feeling within the desire, the more quickly it will be attained. However, if one is foolish enough to desire something that will injure another of God’s children or any other part of His Creation, then that person will pay the penalty in discord and failure somewhere in his own Life’s experience.” “It is very important to realize fully that God’s intent for every one of His children is abundance of every good and perfect thing. He created Perfection and endowed His children with exactly the same power. They can create and maintain Perfection also and express God - dominion over the earth and all that is therein. Mankind was originally created in the Image: and Likeness of God. The only reason all do not manifest This dominion is because they do not use their Divine Authority - that with which each individual is endowed and by which he is intended to govern his world. Thus, they are not obeying the Law of Love by pouring out peace and blessing to all creation.” “The Eternal Law of Life is that - ‘Whatever you think and feel you bring into form; where your thought is, there you are - for you are your consciousness; and whatever you meditate upon - you become.’”

From the Sacred Text of the Universal White Brotherhood: For the Glory of God, Segment I, Part 2 of 2

00:12:49

From the Sacred Text of the Universal White Brotherhood: For the Glory of God, Segment I, Part 2 of 2

Today, we will hear more fascinating principles, as well as Master Beinsa Douno’s discussion on the law of Love. “An advanced person has to have a certain inner knowledge–a presentiment for future developments. For the time being, all of you have the opportunity to be influenced by the external world. You are reflectors of the external world, but you must know that the light of others is their own light, while yours is your own light. However, if you only reflect their light, the moment it stops, you will lose it too; but if the Light is in you, you will keep it forever.” “The law of Love is the following: when a feeling of Love descends upon me it always comes from above, from Heaven and in turn I have to give something by all means. If I do not give something, I cannot manifest Love. When God, Who loves us, manifests Himself, He gives us something. Similarly, whenever we want to love God, we must also give something from ourselves. We have to sacrifice something. We have to give out our fruit, as God also wants something from us. What should we give–sweet fruit from our garden? No, we will offer fruit from the garden of our heart and bring it on a special tablet, made of gold and diamonds. Up there, at God' s place, an angel will meet us and will receive the fruit from us.” “How do you communicate with the invisible world? While you are sleeping, you should pray and think. What are your translators like? When I return to the distant past, I see that on many occasions you did not use the opportunities which you had to develop yourselves. You made such errors that you raised huge barricades in front of you. You alone, erected whole mountains in your life. Now you come across these errors. Currently you must deal with what you once did to others. That is why today, you are given favorable conditions to improve your life journey. Your present life journey is an opportunity to liquidate all contradictions that exist. You can liquidate them now. These contradictions are not big.” “In the future, people will develop their inner abilities and when one talks and sings somewhere, the sound will be transmitted through the ether to remote destinations and others will perceive it. The sound will go through the air without obstacles. For example, if you sing in Varna, your voice will be heard everywhere.”

From the Sacred Text of the Universal White Brotherhood: For the Glory of God, Segment I, Part 1 of 2

00:13:21

From the Sacred Text of the Universal White Brotherhood: For the Glory of God, Segment I, Part 1 of 2

The spiritual lineage of the Universal White Brotherhood was founded by Master Beinsa Douno, also known as Peter Konstantinov Deunov, of Bulgaria, in 1897. The Universal White Brotherhood believes that God is in everything: in the stones, the plants, the water, the air, the animals, and the light. Following the principle of ahimsa, or non-violence, Master Beinsa Douno practiced and preached a vegetarian diet. Today, we present to you the sacred teachings of the Universal White Brotherhood with an excerpt from Master Beinsa Douno’s lecture entitled, “For the Glory of God.” “All these external manifestations of Life have their own form. Warmth creates certain forms in people. Light also creates certain forms. Life has certain forms as well. Every flow creates its own particular forms. The warmth and light of the Sun have a big impact first on the religious state of people, as well as on science. You shall strive to preserve this warmth and light within yourselves. You shall never lose the small warmth that you have in the solar plexus! This warmth should always exist in you. It is necessary to you. If you have this warmth, you are invulnerable. No one can harm you. However, if you lose this warmth, the biggest misfortunes may come upon you: storms, catastrophes. They can destroy you entirely, so that nothing will remain from you. If you keep this warmth in you, Light will eventually come. When Light comes, it bestows knowledge on people. Thus, the light ether has an impact on the brain. The thermal ether has an impact on the heart. A number of chemical processes take place in the human heart directed from the inside to the outside. They determine in which way a person will manifest oneself. Do not be held back by the different manifestations of human life! The outside world may be held back, but not you. You should know that regardless of the way in which people manifest themselves, it is all for the Glory of God. Your mistakes and omissions represent opportunities for the elevation of beings that are more advanced than you. When you make a certain error, these beings that are invisible for you, will use this error for the formation of a great virtue. Everything in the world is created in such a way that these conscious beings will use every error of yours to create a new virtue. Now, be aware of saying: if everything is for good, let us make mistakes! No, that is not right. When you have unconsciously made a mistake or an omission, then I say that you should not be sorry for it. This mistake of yours will be used by another being for something good. You should know that as long as you are on Earth you will make mistakes. They are inevitable. However, mistakes should not be made on purpose.”

Selections from The Astral City - Chapter 6: Precious Advice

00:13:22

Selections from The Astral City - Chapter 6: Precious Advice

"Man is not forsaken on Earth. He is a child of God engaged in constructive work, temporarily clothed in flesh. He is a student in a meritorious school, where he must learn to raise himself up. The human struggle is his opportunity, his set of tools, and his textbook." "How childish to imagine that the mere 'ringing down of the curtain' (physical death) would settle transcendental questions of the Infinite. One life is but a single act. One body - a garment. One century - a day. One task - an experience. One triumph - an acquisition. One death - a breath of renovation. How many lives, how many bodies, how many centuries, how many tasks, how many triumphs, how many deaths are still allotted to us?" These astounding messages from the spirits via a human medium convey the message of Spiritism. Numerous books have been written that provide insights into the afterlife and the soul’s immortality. One such volume is "Nosso Lar," or "The Astral City," by Spirit André Luiz through Spiritist medium Francisco Cândido Xavier. In "The Astral City," former medical doctor André Luiz speaks from the afterlife of his awakening and healing within a spiritual society near the Earth’s surface. This story describes not only the continuation of life beyond the physical body, but more importantly how Heaven cares for each and every human soul. “The only way to spiritual balance is to open your heart to the Divine Light. If you consider the necessary effort to be an oppressive burden or see the struggle for redemption as an imposition, it is a sure sign of spiritual blindness. The more you dwell on your own painful experiences, the more you bind yourself to them. You can be sure that the same Father whom shelters and watches over you will also care for your loved ones on Earth. We should certainly regard the family as a sacred institution, but always keep in mind that it is just a small branch of the Universal Family under the loving guidance of one Divine Father.”

Stoicism as a Way of Life - Selection from Epictetus’ Enchiridion, Part 2 of 2

Stoicism as a Way of Life - Selection from Epictetus’ Enchiridion, Part 2 of 2

Today, we continue with a selection from Epictetus’ teachings, as recorded by his student Arrian, in the book “The Enchiridion.” The Stoic sage gives more guidelines on how to live a life of freedom and one in harmony with nature. “If you would improve, be content to be thought foolish and dull with regard to externals. Do not desire to be thought to know anything; and though you should appear to others to be somebody, distrust yourself. For be assured, it is not easy at once to keep your will in harmony with nature and to secure externals; but while you are absorbed in the one, you must of necessity neglect the other.” “A master is he who is able to confer or remove whatever that man seeks or shuns. Whoever then would be free, let him wish nothing, let him decline nothing, which depends on others; else he must necessarily be a slave.” “And if you do not so much as take the things which are set before you, but are able even to forego them, then you will not only be worthy to feast with the gods, but to rule with them also. For, by thus doing, Diogenes and Heraclitus, and others like them, deservedly became divine, and were so recognized.” “As far as conversation goes, however, do not disdain to accommodate yourself to him and, if need be, to groan with him. Take heed, however, not to groan inwardly, too. ‘Remember that you are an actor in a drama of such sort as the Author chooses — if short, then in a short one; if long, then in a long one. If it be His pleasure that you should enact a poor man, or a cripple, or a ruler, or a private citizen, see that you act it well. For this is your business — to act well the given part, but to choose it belongs to another.’” “Now, for your part, do not have a supercilious look indeed, but keep steadily to those things which appear best to you, as one appointed by God to this particular station. For remember that, if you are persistent, those very persons who at first ridiculed will afterwards admire you. But if you are conquered by them, you will incur a double ridicule.”

Stoicism as a Way of Life - Selection from Epictetus’ Enchiridion, Part 1 of 2

Stoicism as a Way of Life - Selection from Epictetus’ Enchiridion, Part 1 of 2

Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher, who lived in the 1st and 2nd centuries CE. Epictetus, who led a simple lifestyle with very few possessions, taught a practical philosophy to help people lead meaningful lives. He emphasized integrity, personal freedom and self-mastery, through the use of reason and virtue, which is required to live in accordance with nature. We’ll now read a segment of the collected teachings from “The Enchiridion” by Epictetus. According to Epictetus’ beliefs, all external events are beyond our control, and we should accept them with ease, calmness, and humility. Whereas, each individual is responsible for their own actions, which they should govern with determination and self-discipline. “There are things which are within our power, and there are things which are beyond our power. Within our power are opinion, aim, desire, aversion, and, in one word, whatever affairs are our own. Beyond our power are body, property, reputation, office, and, in one word, whatever are not properly our own affairs. Now the things within our power are by nature free, unrestricted, unhindered; but those beyond our power are weak, dependent, restricted, alien. Remember, then, that if you attribute freedom to things by nature dependent and take what belongs to others for your own, you will be hindered, you will lament, you will be disturbed, you will find fault both with gods and men.” “Men are disturbed not by things, but by the views which they take of things. Thus death is nothing terrible, else it would have appeared so to Socrates. But the terror consists in our notion of death, that it is terrible. When, therefore, we are hindered or disturbed, or grieved, let us never impute it to others, but to ourselves — that is, to our own views. It is the action of an uninstructed person to reproach others for his own misfortunes; of one entering upon instruction, to reproach himself; and one perfectly instructed, to reproach neither others nor himself.” “Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well.”
