From Buddhist Scriptures: Metta Sutra and Dhammacakkappavattana Sutra, Part 2 of 4

“Now this, bhikkhus (Buddhist monks or devotees), is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering.” “Now this, bhikkhus (Buddhist monks or devotees), is the noble truth of the origin of suffering: it is this craving which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there; that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continuation, craving for discontinuation.” “Now this, bhikkhus (Buddhist monks or devotees), is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering: it is the Noble Eightfold Path; that is, right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.”

From the Holy Text of Tibetan Buddhism: Sixty Songs of Milarepa – Songs 7-8, 25-29, 31-32, Part 2 of 2

This frail body is subject e’er to sickness. So that one suffers excruciating pain. The illnesses of Praana (mind), gall and phlegm Constantly invade this frail human body, Causing its blood and matter to be heated; The organs are thus gripped by pain. In a safe and easy bed, The sick man fells no comfort, But turns and tosses, groaning in lament. Through the Karma of (past) meanness, Though with best of food you feed him, He vomits all that he can take. When you lay him in the cool, He still feels hot and burning; When you wrap him in warm cloth, He fells cold as though soaked in sleet. Though friends and kinsmen gather round, None can relieve or share his pains? He who has not realized the truth of No-illness Much suffering must undergo, when sickness will strike, It is wise to practice Holy Dharma-The sure conqueror of illness!

Selection from Plato’s Dialogue “Phaedo,” Part 2 of 2

Selection from Plato’s Dialogue “Phaedo,” Part 2 of 2

According to Plato, the soul loses at birth the clear recollection of Ideas. Plato’s philosophy asserts the presence of the physical realm and the spiritual rem. The physical realm is the material world, that is imperfect and evolving. As for the spiritual realm, and is termed by Plato it exists beyond as the Realm of Forms or the Realm of Ideas or Realm of Ideals. If we would have pure knowledge of anything, we must be quit of the body- and then we shall attain the soul in herself must behold things in themselves: and then we shall attain the wisdom which we desire.

The Godly Received Visionary Wisdom by Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Part 1 of 2

The Godly Received Visionary Wisdom by Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Part 1 of 2

We will explore some of the excerpts from selected writings by the German Saint. As body and soul are one and support each other, in the same way the planets with the firmament confirm each other and strengthen each other. And like the soul that enlivens and strengthens the body. Consider the One who made human beings to be a mirror to the fullness of all His miracles, so that the knowledge of God would shine in them, as it is written: ‘You are gods and all of you are sons of the Most High.’ May He look upon you, and direct you to his will. Whenever human reason imitates God, then a human being can reach God, who has neither beginning nor end.

Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, M.D. is a renowned spiritual author, teacher, yogi and a homeopath; So the essence of the Torah teachings in diet is about vegetarianism. And what there is, is a very strong connection between your health and your spirit. The welfare of the soul can only be achieved after attaining the welfare of the body. When the body aches, the soul too is weakened. God’s initial intention was that people should be vegetarian. So make it no mistake. This dietary law is really a unique statement in human spiritual history. Because eating is an act of holiness.

The Inner Teachings of Chuang Tzu: Chapter 19, Realizing a Full Life, Part 2 of 2

Kong Zi(Confucius) was observing the view from the Lu Liang Mountains where there was a waterfall three hundred feet high. The foam and froth created by the water as it hit bottom extended for thirteen miles. Neither turtles, alligators, fish nor any other water creatures were able to swim in those rapids. He saw a man swimming in the current. Kong Zi went up to him and asked:“ I thought you must have been some sort of ghost, but now I can see you’re a man. Please excuse me for asking, but do you have a special way to flit through water like that?” No, I don’t have a special way. I started with what was inborn in me, grew up following my own nature, and accomplished what I have because of my fate.

From the Holy Christian Bible: The Gospel of Luke – Excerpts from Chapters 1-4, Part 2 of 2

Some sources say that Jesus went to India, the land of spiritual knowledge since time immemorial, where he studied with adept and wise teachers. He next enters the Gospel narrative at about the age of 30 when he was baptized by John the Baptist, an event that marks the beginning of his brief public life as a teacher. Jesus taught God’s love and forgiveness to all. Jesus is especially loved and remembered because of his sacrifice.

From the Holy Text of Tibetan Buddhism: Sixty Songs of Milarepa – Songs 54-56 & 58-60, Part 2 of 2

This is the song of Milarepa to some patrons from Drin who were ashamed because of the Jetsun’s (Revered) lack of conventional behavior; through wandering long in many places, I have forgotten my native land. Staying long with my Holy Jetsun (Revered), I have forgotten all my kinsmen. Keeping for long the Buddha’s Teaching. I have forgotten worldly things.

Selection from Songs of Kabir, Part 1 of 2

WITHIN this earthen vessel are bowers and groves, and within it is the Creator. Within this vessel are the seven oceans and the unnumbered stars. The touchstone and the jewel-appraiser are within; And within this vessel the Eternal Soundeth, and spring wells up. Kabir says: “Listen to me, my Friend! My beloved Lord is within.”There the Unstruck Music sounds of itself; There the streams of light flow in all directions. Few are the men who can cross to that shore! Goddess of Music, play on the veena — There is my Lord self-revealed, and the scent of sandal and flowers dwells in those deeps. “The Formless is in the midst of all forms. I sing the glory of forms.”

Selection from Guan Yin Sutra and Heart Sutra, Read by Head Priest Souken Danjo

Listen to the practices of Avalokitesvara, which have their application to all! His vow is deep like the ocean and his kalpa is of inconceivable length. After having attended many thousands of kotis of buddhas, He made a great, pure vow. I will now explain it to you in brief: If you hear his name and see his body, and contemplate him in though, your life will not be in vain; and you will extinguish all suffering. If anyone wants to hurt you and pushes you into a great firepit, If you contemplate the power of Avalokitesvara, the firepit will change into a pond. If you drift upon the great ocean and meet danger from dragons, fish, and demons, If you contemplate the power of Avalokitesvara, you will not be swallowed by the waves. If you on the peak of Sumeru and are pushed by somebody, If you contemplate the power of Avalokitesvara, you will stay suspended in the air like the sun. If any evil one chases you and pushes you from Mount Diamond, If you contemplate the power of Avalokitesvara, not even a single hair will be hurt.

The Socratic Meaning of Virtue: Memorabilia by Xenophon, Part 1 of 2

Around 469 BC, Socrates was born in Athens, Greece. Many people consider him to be the father of Western philosophy. Others think of Socrates as an insightful teacher and an enlightened Master. Today, we present to you Socrates’ philosophy through an excerpt of a dialogue written by Xenophon titled, “Memorabilia.” “You seem, Antiphon, to imagine that happiness consists in luxury and extravagance. But my belief is that to have no wants is Divine; to have as few as possible comes next to the Divine; and as that which is Divine is Supreme, so that which approaches nearest to its nature is nearest to the Supreme.”

From the Sacred Principles of BISHNOIS Principles 14-18

He led the people in the planting of trees and advised them to remain devoted to God and nurture their compassion towards fellow beings. He also outlined a set of 29 principles by which he advised his followers to live their lives. This is how the Bishnoi religion obtain its name: “Bish” meaning 20, and “Nois” meaning 9. In the 29 guidelines that he gave this followers, Jambhoji encouraged them to be vegetarians. One should not eat meat nor harm animals, but treat them as they would their own kin. Today, we invite you to listen to some of the guidelines established by Shri Jambheshwar Bhagwan or Jambhoji. “Cheating is prohibited. We should not tell lies and cheat for our selfishness or to harm others. Temporarily we may cheat others and get our work done by lying, but the truth cannot be hidden for long, and in the end we lose respect, confidence, trust and credibility.”
