Telling "We Animals" Stories: Interview with Jo-Anne McArthur (vegan), Part 2 of 4

Telling "We Animals" Stories: Interview with Jo-Anne McArthur (vegan), Part 2 of 4

“Then, there is a whole other category: the invisible animals, who we have a very close relationship with, and yet we fail to see them in our lives. We think of them as ‘our ribs’ or ‘wings,’ instead of the animal that they are. Or we think of them as a ‘fur trim’ instead of a fox or mink. These animals are completely invisible, and we use and abuse them worldwide every single day. And they aren’t represented anywhere; they’re invisible, we don’t see them in the media. And so, that became my mission: To illuminate the lives of these animals.” In 2013, Jo-Anne McArthur published her first book, “We Animals,” which was followed in 2017 by her second book entitled “Captive.” She has been awarded a range of commendations for her photography and activism, including the 2018 Wildlife Photographer of the Year, People’s Choice award. “For me, it was important to make a book specifically of this animal work to give it historical weight and significance, and not just to put the work out on social media.” “So, what we do with the images – and it’s not just me now, it’s several of us photographers and filmmakers – we put everything on the We Animals Archive. I think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. There are about 12,000 video clips and photos of all sorts of industries in almost over 60 countries now, of our use and abuse, and sharing of space with animals. And the images are searchable by key word. And you get the high-res images for free. And again: it’s free.”

Telling "We Animals" Stories: Interview with Jo-Anne McArthur (vegan), Part 3 of 4

“One of my main bits of advice for people who are photographing animals who want to show them or bring out the individual is to get down. Usually often, animals are smaller than us, so to get down and to get close and just to be patient and stay still and let them come to you and let them express their curiosity about you, and then you will be able to photograph something of that animal that is more about them and less about us looking down at them. What I really want to show is ‘we animals’ and how we are treating those animals. And so, it’s important to me to show the constructs that we have created in which we keep these animals. And so sometimes, the animal is not even really the subject of the photo – it’s everything that’s happening around that animal that we have done, that we have constructed.” “And I’ve also spent some time photographing at slaughterhouses recently. I’m just witnessing, I’m focusing on the individuals who are being slaughtered, and this is literally hell on Earth. I just can’t believe that we have created systems that work this way and that, not only do we slaughter beautiful living beings, but we do it in front of them, in front of all the others. It’s absolutely horrific, and it’s worldwide. It’s a complete lack of respect for all others, and it really is shocking. And that’s why, unfortunately, I have to keep getting up close to the slaughter so that we can all see that this is really how we’re doing it.”

Refugee Artists – Ambassadors of Peace, Culture, and Humanity, Part 2 of 3

Mr. Huberman was a Jewish violinist born in Czestochowa, Poland, in 1882. Amid growing anti-Semitic policies that rippled across Europe during the 1930s, premier Jewish musicians found themselves jobless and their lives threatened. Mr. Huberman realized that his orchestra was a way to save his fellow musicians and began to tirelessly work to fulfil that dream. Eventually, he was able to rescue nearly 1,000 musicians and their families and formed the Palestine Symphony Orchestra. In 1948, when the State of Israel was created, the orchestra was renamed as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO). Today, the IPO is a leading internationally renowned orchestra, that travels and performs worldwide with other acclaimed musicians. Mr. Arturo Toscanini, the conductor who led the Palestine Symphony Orchestra at its debut, was one of the greatest operatic conductors of his time. Through the years, Mr. Toscanini worked with many prominent music companies around the world, such as La Scala Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and of course, the Palestine Symphony Orchestra. He refused an invitation to perform at the prestigious Wagner music festival, and instead, traveled to Palestine in 1936 to conduct the inaugural concert of the all-Jewish refugee orchestra, the Palestine Symphony Orchestra. In 1987, he was posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Isabel Allende is an accomplished refugee writer and was called “the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author.” Inspired by her tumultuous life, Ms. Allende often writes about freedom of thought and liberation of women in a patriarchal society. She has been honored worldwide for her astounding works, including the Chilean National Prize for Literature, Library of Congress Creative Achievement Award for Fiction, honorary Doctorates from Harvard, and other distinguished universities, and countless other awards. Always an advocate for equal rights, on December 9, 1996, in honor of her late daughter, Paula Frias Allende, Ms. Allende established the Isabel Allende Foundation, “dedicated to supporting programs that promote and preserve the fundamental rights of women and children to be empowered and protected.”

Refugee Artists – Ambassadors of Peace, Culture, and Humanity, Part 1 of 3

June 20th was declared World Refugee Day by the United Nations. Throughout the long history of humankind, there have been refugees all over the world, as the result of conflicts or natural or human-made disasters. In our three-part show, we pay tribute to some of the distinguished artists, who happened to be refugees. These special individuals imbue their struggles, love, and longing into moving creations of music, art, and literature that endure the test of time. Hungarian-born Jewish orchestral and operatic conductor, Sir Georg Solti, is an excellent example of the positive impact to society one refugee can achieve. After graduating from the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy, his blossoming career as a conductor was halted by conflict and he became a religious refugee. After the war, Mr. Solti returned to prominence and was appointed music director by many renowned music companies, such as the Bavarian State Opera, Covent Garden Opera Company and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, helping them achieve even greater international recognition in the operatic and classical music world. In 1968, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and knighted him in 1972. Renowned universities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford, DePaul, and the Royal College of Music have awarded him with honorary fellowships and degrees. The music industry honored him with 31 Grammy Awards, 14 Grand Prix Mondial du Disque awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. Near the end of his fulfilling life, Mr. Solti founded the World Orchestra for Peace, a large gathering of 81 musicians from 40 nations. In his own words, Mr. Solti believed in the “unique strength of music as an ambassador for peace.” The Orchestra debuted in Geneva to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995.

Faran Ensemble, Part 2 of 2

Since its establishment in 2009, the Faran Ensemble has travelled extensively around the world, performing in concerts and various musical festivals. The band has released two albums, and won the grand prize at the 2014 international Jewish Music Festival of Amsterdam. They were selected as the best composition, and best Israeli talent. The Faran Ensemble often plays or records their music in nature, such as in the desert, the mountains, or in the woods. What’s the reason behind it, and how does nature and other surroundings influence them? “All our composition is original, and very influenced from the landscape that’s around us. Most of the times, meeting in nature, and creating in nature, and it’s connecting us and our music, and gives us this silence to create for. An inspiration.” Not only do the band members play in nature, studios, and concerts, but they also reach out to people in need and use music to lift them up. “They’re learning, they can beat the drum the right way. And they can speak through the drum. They can play rhythms. And its wonderful and after a while, maybe after two, three, four months, they have so much knowledge, and they can play very good. And it makes them calm, it makes them calm, it makes them also to believe in themselves that they can do things. And that’s for these special kids. I hope we brought them some comfort, hope.”

The South African singer, songwriter, and actress, Miriam Makeba, is an iconic figure in the anti-Apartheid movement. For her anti-discrimination stance, her passport was revoked and she became a stateless person. Miriam Makeba relocated to Guinea in 1968, due to growing civil rights controversy in the US. Celebrating the Sacred Motherhood, Part 3 of 5

Now, let's continue watching part 3. "Missing Mother on Mother's Day" is a song praising a mother's love. It shows a kind and diligent nomadic mother standing in the wind missing her son far away. The second performance is a melodious song which carries the nostalgia of the vast grassland, blended harmoniously with the introspective and open-minded Mongolian dance. Thereby, it expresses the nostalgic feeling of a traveler who has been away from his homeland for a long time. "Birds are chirping and dawn has come, Red sun is rising on the horizon, Longing of all these years have not brought back my beloved mother. Through the sprouting desire in a dreaming heart, for the universe to make my mom immortal?" Next, let's welcome our Iranian initiate, who lives in Australia now. She will recite Rumi's poem "Come, the Beloved is Here," and perform a Kurdish festival dance. The poem by Rumi tells the internal quest for God. The dance is a group dance generally, to elevate the spirit through adversity. "You have gone hundred times this long journey to reach that House (Kaaba). Try once to come to the roof of this House. Once enter the state of Ihram, your journey in desert has finished. But you should totally get rid of this physical body."

Moroccan African Cultural Centre: Joyously Uniting Cultures, Part 2 of 2

We welcome back Mr. Christian Adda as he speaks about how the African Cultural Centre welcomes project proposals from artists, and supports the artists in bringing their projects to fruition. “We have a lot of them. We try to sort them out so that it stays in the vision of what we want to do, of promoting African culture and making this culture known.” As Mr. Adda explains, media plays an important role in cultural development and cultural appropriation. “So, we believe and are convinced that the media must be motors to convey all that is art or all that is cultural heritage. So, we are convinced that culture, knowing one’s culture, helps us to go beyond our potential.” The African Cultural Centre strives to serve as a bridge between Moroccan officials and Sub-Saharan communities. “We want to merge and we also want to build bridges. So, the Cultural Centre started here, and we will build bridges to other countries; and create these bridges so that we can start from our cultures to get answers for the development of our continent. We will participate much more in finding solutions, African solutions.” Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Lovingly contribute US$20,000 further support this uniting and comforting centre for the Africans.”

Moroccan African Cultural Centre: Joyously Uniting Cultures, Part 1 of 2

The Moroccan African Cultural Centre was created in 2010 by Mr. Christian Adda, Mr. Olivier Sonkeng, and Ms. Odile Bories. Busy and vibrant, the Centre celebrates culture, art, and development, bringing together all the Sub-Saharan communities in Morocco. Services and activities promote the wellbeing, expansion, and growth of African people, their traditions, and cultures. “Our first objective is to enable children, the children of migration, to know their roots, of their country of origin or their parents’.
