UK consultant and author Paul Northridge shares his near-death experience: When Paul was 14, he underwent yet another surgery for spina bifida, a genetic condition that left him physically handicapped from birth. Just before the operation, hospital team members administered a muscle relaxant, but Paul’s body reacted violently. His hands turned red and painful, and as he showed them to the surgeon, Paul saw the shock on his face—then everything went black.
Paul thought he had simply passed out, but he soon realized he had no eyes, limbs, or physical form. He was conscious in total darkness. Moments later, he drifted out of his body at an angle and could see doctors and nurses working frantically to revive him. He felt no fear or desire to return, only curiosity. His awareness could move freely, with a full 360-degree view.
A portal appeared on the hospital wall— greenish-blue, glowing softly. Three luminous beings emerged from it, their upper forms humanoid but dissolving into light, radiating deep, unconditional love. They asked if he wanted to leave with them, and when he agreed, Paul was instantly transported to another realm that felt like “home.”
It was a vast, bustling expanse, teeming with countless souls. Some were newly arrived with guides; others floated above, joyfully playing games with spheres of light. As he moved toward what seemed like a “life review” area, his guides told him not to disturb one soul cocooned in a healing bubble—he/she was recovering from trauma.
At the life review, a well-like structure appeared before him. As Paul gazed into it, it merged with him, allowing him to relive his human experiences as Paul Northridge— not like watching a movie, but immersing him fully, feeling every emotion, thought, and sensation.
Paul relived the intense bullying he endured at age six or seven due to his disability. In response, he had briefly become a bully himself, targeting weaker children he could more easily reach, unable to chase others— a regrettable phase. Crucially, he now perceived it through his victims’ eyes, minds, and hearts: their pain, anger, upset, and confusion. This evoked immediate regret as he realized, “I hurt me—we are all one consciousness.”
Next, Paul saw the present: his parents in the kitchen, thinking lovingly about him as he underwent surgery. He could see their thoughts clearly. Then came glimpses of his future. He saw himself driving— something he thought impossible for a disabled boy, but he would later pass his driving test at 17. He saw frequent travels to Russia, which puzzled him until adulthood, when he married a Russian woman in 2008. Paul foresaw using a mobile phone long before they existed, and finally, he saw his own future death in Russia as an elderly man, with two women—likely his wife and daughter— by his side.
Paul also witnessed several of his past lives and deaths, including one where he was impaled on wooden spikes. He was shown the beginning of life and how consciousness enters the embryo directly after conception. He saw animal-people and understood that dog- and cat-people exist to teach humans unconditional love and protection.
Afterward, his three guides reappeared and asked if he wanted to return to being Paul Northridge or remain in the spirit world. Staying would mean reliving childhood traumas— bullying, operations— from scratch later, which Paul did not want to do. Feeling he still had much to learn, he chose to return. As he agreed, he saw a warm, loving Light—then instantly woke from surgery.
After his near-death experience, Paul’s anger faded. He stopped blaming God, or asking, “Why me?” over being bullied and being the only disabled student at school. Though raised Catholic, he no longer saw God through religion but as part of an inner journey toward Self-realization. His main message is that love—especially unconditional love— is the true essence of existence, and that all souls are connected in one consciousness (NDE Diary)
