On December 19, 1958, Maria made her debut in a gala performance at Paris Opera with the then French President, His Excellency René Coty, and other members of the Parisian elite in attendance. Maria had by then taken the opera establishment by storm, and “reigned like a goddess” on the world’s most prestigious operatic stages. However, this global phenomenon didn’t just happen by chance. It was the last time the world ever heard Maria sing in public.
