Various factors can cause airway obstruction and snoring including nasal congestion, obesity, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, and sleeping position. As we age, throat muscles weaken, which makes the airway more prone to collapse, potentially leading to snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces snoring since extra weight surrounding the neck contributes to airway obstruction. Even a small weight loss can make a big difference. Additionally, sleeping on your side instead of your back can prevent your tongue from sliding backwards and blocking the airway, and staying well-hydrated prevents thicker mucus formation – a contributor to snoring. Managing your allergies to minimize nasal congestion is also a smart move. Utilize air purifiers to reduce exposure to allergens and take antihistamines to help improve airflow.
