Afghanistan receives food aid from Korea.
The Korean government has donated US$9 million through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Afghanistan for humanitarian aid to the Afghan people. Approximately US$8 million of the grant will be used to provide food assistance to 111,000 people severely affected by conflict, drought and the ongoing economic crisis. The remaining US$1 million will go to WFP Pakistan to assist people living along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan. The WFP has announced it needs US$220 million a month to provide food assistance in 2022 to 23 million people in Afghanistan. Korea is a laureate of three Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion and Shining World Leadership Awards for Protection and Peace. International astronomers discover previously unknown type of black hole.
In a paper recently published in the “Astrophysical Journal,” scientists reported on their observations of a rare black hole of intermediate mass located in a cluster of stars in the Andromeda Galaxy, a galactic neighbor to the Milky Way. Previously, researchers had only observed supermassive black holes located at the center of galaxies, and the smaller stellar black holes that are created when stars explode. The newly discovered object has a mass of about 100,000 times that of our Sun, and was found using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, United States. It is located in a giant star cluster that is over six million times heavier than our Sun. Way to go, international astronomers, in helping to reveal the mysteries of the cosmos. Scientists in United States create plastic-like compound stronger than steel.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, have created a new substance called “2DPA-1.” This material is two times stronger than steel but only one-sixth the density. It is capable of conducting electricity and blocking gas, and has possibilities for use ranging from changing how we build personal electronics, such as mobile phone screens to how we produce large-scale construction materials. By nature, the compound is able to assemble itself into layered sheets and the researchers say it is simple to manufacture in mass amounts. Dr. Michael S. Strano, an MIT chemical engineering professor and lead author on the paper, said that 2DPA-1 could be used to coat other materials, such as steel structures, and to protect metal in vehicles. United Kingdom-based optical retailer Lenstore has published the Healthy Lifestyle Cities Report 2022 that ranks 48 of the world’s metropolises for leading a healthy and happy life. The publication uses metrics such as life expectancy, sunshine hours received annually, obesity levels, the average amount of hours worked per week and more. At the top of the list was Vienna, Austria, followed by Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Copenhagen, Denmark and Frankfurt, Germany. Frankfurt and Berlin, Germany, recorded the lowest number of hours worked per week, at 25.6 on average. Heroic officer saves dog-person from vehicle fire in Colorado, USA.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Michael Gregorek was called to the scene of a burning sports utility vehicle (SUV), where a distressed man was unsuccessfully trying to rescue his dog-person friend named Hank from the smoke-filled vehicle. Hank had been waiting for his caregiver in the SUV when an electrical fire broke out. Without hesitation, Deputy Gregorek used his baton to shatter two rear windows and pulled beloved Hank out to safety. Luckily, Hank was checked by a veterinarian neighbor afterwards and recovered quickly. Deputy Gregorek, a proud dog-person parent said, “I would have done the same thing whether it be a baby, human, dog or cat.” We wish Hank and his caregiver many safe and happy years together. Aldi UK has reported that sales of vegan products for the month of January this year were 500% higher than the same period last year. The grocery store chain attributes the rise to the Veganuary campaign, as well as the large number of people in the UK adopting the vegan lifestyle. The company also reported that for the entire year of 2021, vegan sales were up by 250% over 2020. The supermarket chain has increased its range of plant-based vegan foods by 50% recently, as it continues to provide its customers with a large selection of compassionate alternatives. Way to go, British citizens and Aldi UK, on the fast-growing sales of vegan items. Shelter for homeless animal-people established in Iraq.
The Baghdad Animal Rescue was recently opened just west of the country’s capital city, with the mission of eventually establishing Iraq’s first veterinary clinic for homeless dog-, cat- and other animal-people. A team of volunteers provides loving care and comfort to rescued stray and injured animal-persons. If more specialized treatment is needed, they are taken to a veterinarian with the cost shared amongst members of the volunteer team. As the animal-people recover at the shelter, adoptions by loving homes are sought. The facility is built on land bought by the team through donations. We deeply thank Baghdad Animal Rescue volunteers and pray you receive the support you need to help you in your compassionate and merciful work.
