For many families, adoption has been a magical gift of transformation, love and fulfillment. The World Health Organization states that one in six people around the world are affected by infertility. The number of children being born per woman has dropped from an average of 4.9 in 1950 to an average of 2.3 in 2023. Researchers predict that this number will drop to 1.59 by 2100. Couples who struggle to become parents can experience immense heartache and grief. However, many happy families have been formed through adoption, which is a popular option for women who have unplanned pregnancies. Rather than choosing abortion, choosing adoption gives babies the gift of life.

A notable example is the family of Mr. Will Herring, a former professional football player from the United States, who adopted two children and beautifully demonstrated the love and strength that come from building a family in this way. And even more surprises and blessings were in store for the Herring family. “We were able to get pregnant after we had Maddie. But what I think is the coolest thing is whether God gave us our child through us conceiving them ourselves, or through adoption, there’s no difference. There’s no difference between Maddie, between Reese (who was born naturally), between Isaiah. They’re all ours. They were all gifted to us from the Lord.”

Making the decision to place a child for adoption is one based on love and hope. Hannah Mongie made this courageous choice after becoming pregnant with her son, Taggart, at 18 years old and her partner, Cayden passed away when she was just 12 weeks into the pregnancy. With a heart overflowing with love for her son, Hannah placed Taggart for adoption. His adoptive mom Emily shares her experience of Taggart coming into her life. “When we walked into that room and she placed him into my arms, I just… my love for her just went beyond any explanation. And sweet Tag, I just instantly knew that he was where he needed to be. And we’re just so grateful for him. As we’ve experienced these open adoptions, we have learned that these, again, these relationships can only help these kids and our kids understand the love that their birth mothers have for them, and why they placed them.”

Adoptive children can also feel immense love when meeting their adoptive parents for the first time. This sweet little girl recalls her experience of first meeting her new mom. “We were very excited to meet you and our daddy. And we love you guys and we want to be here for you and daddy. Do you know what happened to my heart? When I saw you my heart fell in love with you.”

Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) has spoken about the benefits of adoption for families and for society. “I think 99.9 percent of women would never want to abort a child in their body. [...] Why spend trillions for killing, and not spending some millions or billions just to save lives. That will be pleasing to Heavens and bring you a lot, a lot of merit, that will rescue yourself also, the day you die. (Oh, yes.) Whoever organizes all this. And all the people who pay tax, and then their tax money will be used for such charitable, humane purposes. (Oh, yes.) They also get a lot, a lot of Heaven’s blessing. To save a life is incredible blessing. [...]

It’s a win-win for everybody. (For sure.) Because sometimes a woman, or any person, can run into some bad luck. Just temporarily and later they will get up. And then if somebody can take care of their kid like that, unconditionally, then they feel peace. And they can fight with the world to be someone, to make it in the society. Because they are free to do it without being bogged down with the child that she cannot afford at that moment.”
