Irish singer-songwriter Wayne Gilroy shares his near-death experience from 2018: Wayne was undergoing his second liver surgery, knowing the odds of survival were low. After the operation, he woke to find a team of doctors talking in his room and a nurse crying hysterically. Realizing he was in serious trouble, Wayne thought calmly, “This is it.” He wasn’t afraid or in pain— just curious to finally discover what happens after death.
When he next closed his eyes, Wayne found himself falling from a great height into total darkness. He wasn’t spiraling out of control but felt as though he was being guided downward until he landed in what seemed like a vast sea of darkness. It wasn’t water— there was no splash— but it felt fluid and endless.
Around him was pitch blackness—no sound, no light, no sign of life. It was like outer space without stars. At first, he panicked, trying to stay afloat as if in deep water. Then he realized he had no body—no arms, no breathing—only awareness. It was pure consciousness/the soul.
Wayne called out several times into the darkness, asking, “Is anyone here?” but there was no reply— just absolute silence. The emptiness felt infinite and isolating. He wondered if he’d be trapped there forever, or if this could be hell or some kind of punishment. The thought of eternal isolation filled him with dread.
Then Wayne’s thoughts turned to events from his life. Eventually, the faces of his three daughters appeared. Seeing them brought deep calm and peace. That was the last thing he remembered before waking to find himself back in the hospital.
Wayne later felt that if he had sunk beneath that dark, waterlike surface, he might have fallen endlessly into an abyss. It wasn’t a place of flames or torture, but it felt desolate enough that, as he put it, “if you were a Hitler-type character, you could be in real trouble there.” For him, it seemed more like a waiting room or realm of reflection before moving on— proof that consciousness continues beyond the body.
Wayne now believes he visited what many call “the Void,” a place of absolute nothingness and deep thought. “It was a time to think about things, that’s for sure. But I wouldn’t like to be going there again” (wayne gilroy)
Elevating quote of the day: “Only one whose soul is free from attachment and aversion can make right decisions.” — The Venerated Enlightened Lord Mahavira (vegan)
