Much of modern dry eye discomfort comes from the simple fact that we spend long hours looking at screens without blinking enough. A helpful habit is the 20–20–20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds to let the eyes reset and naturally re-lubricate. Blinking more consciously during reading or computer work also helps smooth the tear film across the eye.

For indoor comfort, running a humidifier adds gentle moisture to the air, making it easier for your eyes to stay hydrated. And when you’re outdoors, wearing wraparound glasses protects your eyes from wind, dust, and dry air – small adjustments that can make the eyes feel noticeably more refreshed throughout the day. Warm compresses help soften the natural oils in the eyelids, making it easier for the meibomian glands to release the oils that stabilize the tear film. Staying hydrated throughout the day supports healthy tear production, while refraining from smoking and alcohol helps prevent evaporation of moisture from the eye’s surface.

Vitamin A is essential for maintaining a healthy ocular surface, supporting the mucus layer of the tear film, and keeping the cornea clear and protected. Many plant foods supply beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A as needed. Colorful vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kale are especially rich sources. Foods like oranges, bell peppers, strawberries, and kiwis provide refreshing doses of vitamin C that help maintain tear stability and overall eye comfort.

Almonds, sunflower seeds, and avocados are rich in vitamin E and provide a creamy, satisfying way to nourish both the tear film and the skin around the eyes. These foods can also support long-term eye health by protecting delicate cells in the retina. Crop-based omega-3s – especially Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) from flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts – help reduce inflammation in the glands responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film. Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that act like natural “sunglasses” for the eyes. They help filter harmful blue light and protect the retina from oxidative stress. These carotenoids are found in dark leafy greens like kale and spinach, as well as in broccoli and corn.

Most cases of dry eyes improve with simple habits, good nutrition, and a bit of daily care. Still, if your eyes continue to feel uncomfortable or symptoms slowly become more noticeable, it may be helpful to visit an eye specialist.
