When we think about keeping our houses clean, we usually focus on the obvious places. We wipe the table, vacuum the floor, and scrub the toilet. But what if some of the germiest places aren’t the ones that look dirty?

So, where are germs most likely to hide in our homes? Surprisingly, it’s not always the places that look dirty. Germs love places that are warm, damp, and touched often by people. To find out where they gather the most, researchers from the National Sanitation Foundation International examined 30 common household items. They looked for yeast, mold, and coliform bacteria. Those microbes are often used to show how clean or unclean a surface may be. The biggest surprise was the kitchen sponge, which turned out to be the germiest item in the entire study.

When people think about germs, the toilet is often the first thing that comes to mind. But some of the most overlooked germ hotspots are much smaller. These include the toothbrush holder and the toilet flush handle. Think about the things you use every day, including light switches, faucet handles, refrigerator doors, microwave buttons, stove knobs, cabinet handles, remote controls, and computer keyboards. Many of these are shared with other family members and sometimes even guests. That’s why it’s a good idea to wipe these high-touch surfaces regularly with a household cleaner like vinegar to help reduce germs and keep them clean. Then there are the gadgets we carry everywhere, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Another place that often gets overlooked is the bed.

Our homes naturally contain countless microbes. Many are harmless, and some may even help keep our immune system healthy. The goal isn’t to get rid of every microbe. It’s simply to reduce our exposure to the ones that could make us sick, especially in places where they are most likely to build up and spread. One of the best ways to stop hidden germs from coming home with us is by practicing good hand hygiene. After touching things like elevator buttons, shopping carts, or handrails, pathogens can easily spread to your phone, bag, or even the inside of your car before you have a chance to wash your hands. That’s when hand sanitizer, alcohol-based wipes, or disinfectant sprays can come in handy. They can help reduce the spread of disease-causing organisms until you can wash your hands properly.
