AI and the Science of Smarter Weather Forecasting

Imagine looking up at the sky and knowing exactly what weather to expect in the coming days or even weeks. With the help of advanced science powered by artificial intelligence (AI) weather prediction is reaching new levels of detail and accuracy. The World Meteorological Organization reported that even as little as 24 hours of advance notice can reduce storm damage by 30%.

AI is bringing a new kind of weather forecast. Some models predict the weather for a whole city a few days ahead. Others focus on small areas, like a block, and can tell what will happen in the next few hours. One of the leading mid-range models is GraphCast, developed by Google DeepMind, a British-American AI research team. What’s really impressive is that GraphCast can create a 10-day weather forecast for the entire planet in less than a minute. Another powerful mid-range model is FourCastNet, developed by NVIDIA, a leading American company in graphics and AI computing. FourCastNet can rapidly predict weather conditions like wind, temperature, and rainfall with fine spatial detail. In addition to these mid-range models, AI is also enabling significant advancements in short-range and ultra-short-range weather forecasting. MetNet-3 and CorrDiff are especially noteworthy. MetNet-3, developed by Google, provides high-resolution forecasts for just a few hours ahead. It uses deep learning to predict weather conditions like rain, cloud cover, and temperature, and can be accurate up to 12 hours ahead. CorrDiff is especially valuable for predicting sudden weather events like thunderstorms or flash floods, helping communities respond quickly and stay safe.

On August 21, 2008, during a gathering with our Association members (all vegans) in France, our Most Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) spoke of the importance of acknowledging all enlightened and kind-hearted souls whose compassion and positive energy help protect the planet from harm. “Every time they (scientists) predict something, it did not happen. But I’m telling you why it did not happen either. There are more enlightened people in the world, more vegan people, more compassion, more helping each other, more loving kindness in the world, then this is powerful. It keeps pushing the negative power away, away from the edge, away from harm. And so, the more we are doing our program right now, like having Supreme Master Television broadcasting all the constructive news, and the more you distribute the flyers, more people become vegan, then of course the more stable the planet’s weather and safety will be. That’s what it is.”
