Preparing for Solar Flare Disruptions: Build an Emergency Kit and Create a Family Communication Plan in Advance

We have been lovingly warned that during this period we should prepare for solar disruptions, so today I have a preparation tip for you. Weather influences from outer space, like extreme geomagnetic storms from solar flares, can disrupt power and essential systems. Prepare in advance by building an emergency kit and making a family communication plan. To help keep your food cold during a short power outage, fill plastic containers to 90 percent full with water and store them in your freezer to help it stay cool. Most medicines can stay safe in a closed refrigerator for several hours but check with your doctor or pharmacist if unsure. Store at least 10 liters (2.5 gallons) of drinking water per family member in food safe containers, which will be enough for five days. Remember to allow for animal-family members too. I recommend buying a versatile gravity feed or straw-type water filter also in case of longer outages. Keep your car’s fuel tank at least half full, as gas stations need power to pump fuel. If you usually enter your home through the garage, carry a spare house key in case the door won’t open during an outage. It’s wise to include spare phone batteries or a solar-powered or hand-crank charger in your emergency kit to keep devices like phones and laptops powered during outages. Consider installing non-electric backup heating or cooking options, like a gas stove, kerosene heater, or diesel generator. A little preparation now can make all the difference later.
